I suppose we all have those things that distract us from the abundance of life, eh?  My best friend's sister is dying of cancer that started in her breast and is now in her brain.  Another friend find 2 of her 3 children (adult children) as herione junkies.   With me, it's always been money ... financial situations.  Everyone has some persistent difficulty in their life, yes?

When you think about the possibilities ... the many ways life can be screwed up, it's amazing any of us find some peace of mind.  Likewise, these bodies of ours are so incredible, so magnificiently sewn together, yet it's nothing shy of a miracle that any of us are healthy.

Blessed is a state of mind, I think.  I remember reading something ... someplace (sorry, but I don't remember where) that suggested when asked "how are you?", the best answer is now how you have been up to this moment, but how you wish to be in the moments to come.  In other words,

"How are you?"

"Getting better every day!"       or

"Better than 10 minutes ago!"      or

"Inching closer to my goals!"       or, as the husband of a dear friend always responds ...

"I'm Blessed!"

This kind of attitude adjustment is relatively easy, inexpensive, and ... accomplishes more than one might expect.  It does NOT change your circumstances.  It simply adjusts the focus of how you see those circumstances.  I believe more strongly everyday, that we determine our path by the choices we make daily - even hourly.  We are who and where we are because of our own past choices.  That may come like a slap in the face to some as it did to me, because ... consequences can be a bear!  It does not change the validity of the concept.  Another way to say it is that we reap what we sow, or we get what we pay for.  Life is NOT for Whimps ...

P.S.  You can drop your donation is that basket by the door!  ;)

Very true.  The optimistic answer can help us inch toward a more optimistic attitude. Sometimes, you have to put on an attitude even if it doesn't fit. It may with practice.

Well ... the attitude doesn't reflect the circumstances, but rather, our direction.    This doesn't mean we are untruthful about our circumstances, it just means they do not control our outlook.

That's a good point of view.

Now ... if I can just DO it!  lol  Sometimes the circumstances of life ... SUCK!

Re: Life is NOT for Whimps!
Yep. Sometimes they totally do.

Thanks be unto God that our lives are not held in the sway of a circumstance.

Precisely!

My usual reply is "I'm just peachy!".  Sometimes there's more than a hint of sarcasm, but generally I'm just thankful that I'm still breathing unassisted.

I do not have a "usual" reply.  I tried, "Blessed", but it sounded too, ummm, religious, for me.  And yup, I do not always rule over my circumstances that well.  I still panic when I fall into the "red" ink, but it usually doesn't surprise me.  What's really bad, though, is when I get hit by a wild pitch ... to switch metaphors ungracefully ... which is what has motivated this post!  urgh!  money!

It's funny, how different things are the issue for different people.  I've been poor and I've been wealthy...and I'm somewhere in between now.  Although it was stressful being poor, I was most unhappy during the time when I was wealthy.  My happiness has never been tied to my bank statement.

That struck me very funny, your being thankful that you're still breathing unassisted. I shall use that in the future.

Re: Life is NOT for Whimps!
It's actually a reality in my life.  I have a rare neuromuscular disease.  The other living adult that I know of with this disease is on a ventilator.  I don't know of anyone else who has survived childhood.  I'm so lucky to still be alive and mostly functional.  How can I be anything but thankful?!?

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry, I didn't know! I thought you were trying to be funny. But I agree completely. If you have your health, or even most of it, it's certainly easier to deal with everything else. I certainly wish you the very best with your situation.

No worries.  If you don't have humor, life isn't worth much, is it?

Re: Life is NOT for Whimps!
Well said!  If we can't laugh ... in spite of our circumstances, what do we have?  I told my friend ... money is only money ... I grew up with enough of it, but haven't seen any since my marriage.  Health, family, and friends are everything  - the greatest blessings in this life!

Ladies, you are both precious to me!  Thank you both!

When anyone asks my dad how he is, he usually says "about the same" and for some reason it makes people smile or laugh.

I often reply ... "Just groovy!" with a cute smirk!  Does that count?

One of the most spiritual men I know replies to "How are you?" with, "Just right." I like that answer. I know he's giving thanks to God with that positive respose, and it avoids any religiosity.
