It has begun!  The US Open has come to town.  My header pic is the 9th hole of Oakmont Country CLub, the site of this years US Open, and I live less than 1 mile from the site, but if I try to drive anywhere ... ANYWHERE, I will sit for great lengths of time in my car going no place.  There simply is not enough room to contain the influx of humanity (and vehicles) that come along with such an event!  MERCY!!!

The building and fussing began in March with traffic steadily climbing both in numbers and in stupidity.  The town is an older quaint little one set along the Allegheny River about 20 minutes northeast of the city of Pittsburgh.  The tree-lined streets are mostly brick and narrow, with cars always parked on both sides.  The thing is ... we have 3 rivers and hundreds of bridges, but there are THOUSANDS of people, press, cars, busses, trucks and GAWKERS, all hoping for a glimpse of Tiger n Company.  Then there's those of us who live here ... work here ... and now, sit in traffic here (with the cost of fuel still at $3.00 gal).

Golf has never been one of those "games" - "sports" that I cared much for ... I tried!  I even took it in school ... the first time around.  I like minature golf, but I don't get the fascination ... purses with plenty of zeros ... and the hype!  It certainly is a "rich" sport.  That is obvious by the lovely vehicles jamming the streets.

Economically, it will be great for Oakmont, but I technically live in Plum, a neighbor, and Plum will gain virtually nothing but headaches from the event since what little business district Plum has is no where near the Open.

So ... I propose that the next time OCC wants to bring the Open to town, it should be a referendum for us to vote upon!  I say ... Bah humbug!  (which is why phsbum and I are headed for Charleston, SC on Thursday morning!)

Re: Golf's US Open Comes to Town
Somehow, many years ago, my step-brother in Monroeville got associated with a limousine company that is contracted every year for major sporting events including the Open.  It is his favorite gig, rubbing shoulders with some famous golfers and other sports people.  I certain wouldn't know, but I would guess TIPS make driving in that madhouse a wee bit easier to take!

That would be true in his line or if you're driving FOR them.  I, and my neighbors, however, are just trying to get to the grocery store, to work, to the show store ... and then back home!  *sigh*  I can only WISH I'd get a tip along th eway ... just for putting up with the mess!    Think your bro will share?

I love oakmont. If I wanted to live in the pittsburgh area that would definitly be one of my top places(although I would hate to drive on 28 into downtown). It's such a nice town, and they kept a lot of the small shops on the main street(sorry I don't know the name of it), and you usually don't see that in any of the river towns.

I read an article in the tribune review about how some people in plum are angry that the open is said to be in oakmont since it is "technically" in plum. I agree though, that plum won't get anything out of it, holiday park is just too far(and there really isen't too much there compared to monroeville). But it might help pittsburgh mills a bit, I believe thats one of the bus stops to bring people into oakmont.

yes ... the poor Mills.  There is rumor here that whoever did the demographic study for the Mills sabataged the project either accidently or intentionally ... ???  Doesn't really matter ... there is NOTHING at that mall ... OY!  My kids don't even like it and they're ... well, nearly adults!  It's all just trinket shops.  Very few real clothing shops, especially name brand and no upscale shops or even department stores except Sears.  The only real draw is the theater!

I love Oakmont, too ... just isn't designed to house the golf world!
