There are names and images that many of us grew up with that are, well, fading away ... or so it seems.  Names like Davy Crocket, Daniel Boone, Paul Bunyon, Hiawatha & Pocahontus ... names and stories that reflected not just historical information, but also something of our character.  Have we "outgrown" these images that once seemed almost larger than life?  Become too sophistocated?  Or just distracted by Halo and Grande Theft Auto? Or are they just ... passé?  Should our kids know these names?  Do YOU know them?  ;)

Must we rely on Disney animations to make these historical images ... important?

Johnny Appleseed
retold by
S. E. Schlosser

Johnny Appleseed was a hermit and a wanderer who was welcomed wherever he went in the Ohio territory. Everyone loved him, in spite of his unkempt appearance. He always carried a sack full of apple seeds to plant, and walked barefoot all year round. He knew the frontier woods better than anyone. Even the Indians respected Johnny Appleseed for his courage.  More ...

Re: American Folklore ... Important or Passé?
I can remember the t.v. show of Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett.  Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier.  Daniel Boone was a man, was real man (at least thats how I think the song went).   I'd go back to those days in a second.

hahaha  yes, I remember the shows, too.  It was a more innocent time,  and a time filled with simplier pleasures, a slower, more considerate pace.  Not that these people were perfect, but they had character, which is sadly lacking in many people these days.

Re: American Folklore ... Important or Passé?
those stories have been trivialized by Disney..
Iconic archetypes reduced to 2 dimensional animated "entertainment"..
and what about the classics?

the Three Musketeers is now "Disney's Three Musketeers"

and reading books is now a lost art to anyone under 30

It is sad, for sure.  More importantly, Disney is controlling the evolution of our culture ... and it's not leading, as you point out, in a beneficial direction for anyone!

you're right..it's just filling a perceived void in entertainment..
I thinks schools should teach a "reading" class

I don't know about you, but I think I read every bit of American Folklore ever published prior to 1962... And loved it!

It wouldn't surprise me if it isn't any longer in grade school librarys - thanks to our beloved governments concern about "no child left behind" or to be able to think for themselves!

Re: American Folklore ... Important or Passé?
Well ... I think it goes a lot further back than either Bush, and it's not up to schools to teach important heritage/character things, anyway, right?   Like so many things, I think it goes back to the 60's when our media destroyed our innocence, compromised our heritage, and idolized their ambiguous top dollar-bought-bias as truth ... But before I begin to wax poetic, I'll consider my BP!  lol
