Live traps would be the humane way, I suppose, but I vote for regular old mouse traps. Many years ago we lived across the street from a big open field and for some reason after living in this house several years, we had a mouse invasion. We found poo pellets everywhere, including in our shoes, and they even chewed on our leather shoes. We could hear them in the kitchen at night under the stove. We trapped about 30 of them over a period of a couple of weeks, and never did find where they got in - and even stranger, never saw evidence of any more mice in the remaining several years we lived there. Good luck!
This is a long shot, but peppermint extract/oil works to repel ants, you may try that? Also, there are electronic devices you can put in your home I think that emit a certain frequency which keeps rodents away...you might have to look it up on google.
