Sigh...some things never change, do they? You wish some of these overreacting zealots would realize that ironically, THEY're the ones MAKING this a problem, and it's not the kids or the costumes themselves.
Speaking of things that do not change...for as long as I can remember, the themes for these Spirit Weeks have always been terrible! I mean, the opposite sex and the elderly? Who came up with that sad theme?
I know! The themes came from the kids, actually. The kids wrote down what they wanted to do and then the entire student body votes on them. So the theme didn't come from the teachers, it came from the students. The Christian radio station got all in arms about it because they claimed that a state funded school shouldn't be letting the kids do that, so needless to say, they all panicked and it made national news. The radio station in question only got this into national air play because it was affiliated with six other radio stations. So now the school principal has decided that, since it created such controversy, there will no longer be a "Wacky Week" dress up. It's a shame.
When I was in high school, during one of our spirit weeks we decided to have a "backwards day" where we wore our underwear outside of our clothes and wore the rest of our clothes inside out. I would say that was controversal, got a lot of us sent home to change, but it was no big deal. We even had a stupid redneck day, punk day, and opposite sex dress up day, too. I bet there are a lot of school that do that and it doesn't make headlines. It's so stupid.
Hello, separation of church and state?!

I think it's sad that something innocent like dressing wacky and different than the "norm" was twisted so much. Those children probably don't understand the complexity of cross dressing or being transgender. In high school we had a wacky week like this, to kick off Homecoming week, and let me just say that dressing the opposite gender or like the elderly would have been the least of these people's concerns. There was some crazy shit that people wore to school, and even at a less innocent age - it was all in fun!!
I agree! There were far worse things that I got away with in high school, myself. I say the kids should've been left well enough alone. Let them have their fun!
That is a bit of an overreaction. It's not like they're teaching and telling the children that that is how they are supposed to live. It's for fun, not meant to hurt anyone.
Exactly! It goes to show you how sick some of those Christian groups are. I feel sorry for the kids. This shouldn't have made headlines.
people need to get over themselves and stop cramming their beliefs down peoples throught.
And to answer your question yeah I;d maybe let my kid cross dress once or twice if he did it as a regular thing I would probably take him/her to a shrink to see if there's somthing goign on (like the kid's a transsexual, if he were I'd like to think I'd be excepting)

Amen! You're absolutely right. It just doesn't seem very normal for people to make such drastic judgement calls, you know? I agree with you: let a kid dress up for fun, but if they have leanings toward dressing up like the opposite sex full time, it's time to help them with some professional help. Transgender and transsexual issues are tough ones to handle without some help, especially if the kid is very young and the parents are totally clueless.
