Trick or treating this year was a lot more comfortable, considering that the weather was sunny and everyone seemed to be in a cheerier mood.  My eldest nephew, Josh, dressed up as an alien.  In the first photo he is wearing his mask, but he soon realized that wearing a hard plastic mask can be very uncomfortable and so he didn't wear it for very long.  My younger nephew, Nick, is an executioner who carried his pumpkin of candy on the end of his battle axe.  My nephews come up with all sorts of interesting choices for costumes, many during the year, and I'm always pleasantly surprised to see what they finally decide to do.  Since Nick is the most goth of the family this year, he did me proud.  Now all he needs to do is get into heavy metal music... oh, wait, they both already are courtesy of Guitar Hero!

After stopping at a local K-Mart, my brother Mark started to get into the spirit of things and decided he should also dress up a little.  I think he would've made a perfect Nathan Explosion, lead singer of death metal band DETHKLOCK from the adult swim animated series, Metalocalyse, but that would've required him to straighten his hair, shave, and put on black nail polish.  We didn't have time for that.  So Mark decorated his head with orange, black, and purple spider antenna that had me giggling all while we walked the neighborhood.

As for me, well, the simplest thing for me to do is do the witchy thing.  My nephews and I kept joking that I'm a REAL witch dressed up as a pretend witch.  Yes, my family is priviledged to have a Dianic Witch in the family, so the boys know all about me being Pagan and why this time of year is special.  Still, no matter what the spiritual significance, it's really all about the candy to them... that and getting to dress up!

So, yes, we had some fun.  It's amazing how much people decorate and go all out for this holiday.  There was even an adventurous "werewolf" in a tree handing out goodies.  Too cute.

Oh, and I got compliments on my costume.  Actually, we all got compliments.  We seemed to be the only family that was all costumed up together.  What can I say?  It's a tradition.  Still, gotta wonder who is crazier looking -- me as a fantasy witch, or my brother grinning maniacally behind me?

Re: Trick or Treat 2007
Over here in Wisconsin it's always the weekend before or on Halloween.  I think they do that so it's safer and falls during a time when parents and families can take Sunday off to do the candy giving, too.  But, yes, we did it before the 'Weenie time!

For the actual day I might go see 30 Days of Night...

Can I ask what a Dianic Witch is?

Re: Trick or Treat 2007
It's a branch of Wicca/Witchcraft that is very feminist in its teachings and nature, honoring the Goddess Diana and the God Pan.  Sometimes called Dianic Wicca.  It's related and sometimes considered a branch of Italian Witchcraft, but even more Shamanic.

That sounds cool!  My cousin has dabbled a bit in Wicca/Paganism, and I don't think she identifies with any particular "faith", she's very peace oriented, and I really have to admire anyone who doesn't conform to the "norms" society has set for us.

Re: Trick or Treat 2007
Well, it is a very disciplined tradition in Withcraft.  Most people who "dabble" usually just end up Pagan (having an Earth-centered spirituality and not a religious practice).  Good luck to her!  Sounds like you both are very down-to-earth people!  Those are my kind of folks.

Re: Trick or Treat 2007
I guess that kind of describes her....an Earth-centered spirituality.  I'm sure that breaks her mother's heart though, being a "good Catholic" and all.  My cousin has grown into such an amazing woman and I wish I could be a bit more carefree the way she is.  I'm down to earth too, but in a different way I think.

Re: Trick or Treat 2007
Well, eventually the parental units do chill out about such things.  My mother is a fundamentalist Christian, so you can imagine!  The important thing is to let the parents know that you still respect and love them, that your choice of religion is not a rejection of them or of God, really.  I think eventually people will continue to "make up" their own religions, again not in rejection of God, but in response to the fact that most religious institutions don't work for those who want to think and believe what they will.  We shouldn't have to have some preacher or priest giving us mind control, you know?  We're all different, therefore we should worship as a reflection of our diversity.  Again, good luck to you guys.  Keep your minds and hearts open!

Re: Trick or Treat 2007
I'm not sure if her parents have relaxed about it or not, but she gives them plenty of other things to worry about.  So many people don't recognize the difference between religion and spirituality.  I can safely say that I am not religious whatsoever.  I do not need to belong to a recognized group, have a preacher brainwashing me (for lack of a better term), and I most certainly refuse to be told what is right and wrong.  Life is not black and white!  Thanks again V.

Re: Trick or Treat 2007
Thanks!  I saw him climb all the way up there.  He did it like a monkey.  It was amazing.  He's really up high and I don't know if I correctly captured that in the photo.  I'm pretty short, so I was impressed.  He'd just drop the candy packages from the tree.  He even scared a few kids.  It was great!
