I was just finishing a cup of banana creme yogurt when I got an invitation from my friends Jenn and Damien to be a bridesmaid in their upcoming September 1st wedding.  I squealed, nearly dropping a dollop of yogurt in my lap, and jumped upstairs to tell my brother and my nephews the glad news.  They weren't as enthused as I was.  I guess it's a girl thing, boys.  So this got me thinking...

Jenn and Damien have given me a huge honor -- an honor that I've long wanted and never got from any of my friends before.  An honor I should've gotten from my former best friend, but let's not get into that too deeply now.

I'm happy to become a bridesmaid because it's the next best thing to being a bride -- NO -- better because I don't get to be put through the stress of being the bride.  Does anyone out there understand that feeling?  I've always cried at weddings -- NOT because I wasn't the one getting married, but because the friends I've witnessed get married didn't think I was important enough to be in their wedding ceremony!  I also find weddings to be SO beautiful that I get emotionally moved.  It has nothing to do with the couple being worthy of marriage or enduring love, it all has to do with the beauty and majesty of the ritual.  Weddings have captured my fantasy ever since I was a little girl wishing I could be a fairy princess marrying her prince charming.

Now I've got a big smile on my face and will go to bed dreaming sweet thoughts for my pals.  They really have made my week.  And I've got jewels and gowns on my mind...

And if Jenn picks pill box pink, I'll wear it in their honor proudly even though it's sooooo not my color.

A 'darling' post! And from 'the most feminine perspective!' lol

Re: Musings on Becoming a Bridesmaid
for your sake, I will hope for deep jewel tones, it is fall after all. Which make them acceptable.
And I agree with you. There is something very special in being someone's bridesmaid. Even if you should be the maid of honor....LOL...can you tell I have my own deep seeded issues with this occurrence?

Deep jewel tones of autumn are nice, so who knows?  The way my friends are, they're going to keep it casual and not too formal.  I think they, too, have deep seated issues about weddings, hence why they've waited nearly a decade to get married!  It can be very expensive and at least they've been together for a good long while so they'll be no surprises later.  But, yeah, I know...  If I had more time I'll write about my issues about marriage, which are for the most part very jaded, however I do love the idea of the ceremony, traditional or no.

That is really wonderful! It really is an honor for a friend to invite you to be involved in this way.

This will be the first time I'll get to stand up at someone's wedding.  So I'm really excited about, perhaps more than I should be!

"a dollop of yogurt"  I love that word "dollop"

Very, very cool!!

So do I!  Dollop sounds like a great name for a girl character in a children's book OR an expression about dressing up.

Aww this will be fun. It's so cute that you aren't complaining about what you'd be wearing.

I personally never had a problem with the gown choices. As long as they flattered my figure I was fine.  My problem was everytime I've been a bridesmaid the shoes liked to kill me!  I am not comfortable in heels, especially heels over 2 inches.  I'm always the short bridesmaid so I always end up having to wear 3 inch heels.  I've been a bridesmaid four times and three of the four times were hell on my feet!  My sister had a small wedding so I got to wear whatever I wanted.

Yep!  And I'm looking forward to it.

You sound like my brother, 'cept he's the tall one and hates wearing tight tuxedos with those tight shiny leather shoes.   My brother was so cute when he was little that he ended up being a ring bearer four times, too.

I once had friends get married in a pool and everyone was required to wear swimsuits.  Another pair of pals got married at a Ren fair (that was fun but in the June heat those medieval clothes were way too heavy).  And yet another couple got married in pajamas (they didn't last, go figure).

Ten years ago I had six couples of friends of mine get married all in one summer.  It was depressing.  I was the only one not asked to stand up in the weddings!  And out of those six, four are now divoriced.  Yikes!
