If you grew up in the 50's, 60's, or 70's and are still alive, congratulations. Your mother probably drank, smoke, took aspirin, ate peanuts, ham and soft cheeses. She wasn't tested for diabetes and didn't have a sonogram. Your crib and nursery were likely coated with lead paint and you slept on your stomach.  You rode in a car without a child restraining seat and your home wasn't childproofed.

You are lucky.  I hope you've been buying lottery tickets.

Heck, I grew up like that, and I was born at the end of the Cold War.

We were a few decades behind the times out in the sticks.  I still drink from a garden hose in the summer.

Germs, I guess.

I have very fond olfactory memories of drinking out of a rubber hose with brass fittings.  Now that hoses are more often plastic it can't possibly be as fine an experience.

I guess not.

Of course there are times when being anosmic is desirable - like now when the kid downstairs is burning onions....

And times when it's not.

Like when something catches fire out of view.

no sonogram, true; but my mother had an x-ray of her belly at 8 months to confirm twins.  The doctor heard two heartbeats and wanted to know if it was multiples or an echo.  It was two girls.

Wow. I didn't know they took x-rays of a fetus... sounds dangerous.

Re: Those were the days my friend
With all the warnings of pregnancies and x-rays they have today, I thought so too.

...not to mention all the bacon, butter and balogna we ate... and don't even talk about the 'spam' and white bread, bicuits made with pure lard afloat in gravy and everything fried in hydrogenated fat...

There's more to be grateful for than I ever realized!
