Alone in Universe?  Hawking doubts it.

Famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking has been thinking a lot about the cosmic question, "Are we alone?"  The answer is probably not, he says.

If there is life elsewhere in the universe, Hawking asks why haven't we stumbled onto some alien broadcasts in space, maybe something like "alien quiz shows?"

The 66-year old British cosmologist's coments were part of a lecture at George Washington University on Monday in honor of NASA's 50th anniversary.  He theorized that there are possible answer to whether there is extraterrestrial life.

One option is that there likely isn't life elsewhere.  Or maybe there is intelligent life elsewhere, but when it gets smart enough to send signals into space, it also is smart enough to make destructive nuclear weapons.

Hawking said he prefers the third option:  "Primitive life is very common and intelligent life is fairly rare," he then quickly added:  "Some would say it has yet to occur on earth."  (hmmmm....)

I've always felt that it was pretty arrogant of "us" to assume that we were the only life in the universe.  It seems likely that there is lots of life outside this little solar system and some of it's probably a lot more sophisticated that homo sap

I think so too, Perrye.  That's where I kind of disagree with Hawking.  I think some of that life is much more sophisticated than us, but then as folks know, I am an old Star Trek fan ;~)

Star Trek - me too.

I hold on to the hope that somebody from out there will show up and force us to become a better species, somehow.

I am totally on the same page as you, Perrye.  That's what I keep hoping for.

I love star trek the next generation, I think what this show is all about, is to get us adjusted to various situations they portray on the show so that when it happens in real life it will be old school for us. look at all the technology on that show 25 years ago, that we now have, its amazing! and some of the shows about the ship watching civilizations farther behind than them and watching them in secret, just like it MIght BE , BEING DONE NOW. I think alot of the 'spiritual and religious ' aspects of the show was also a way to spread the same beliefs to us now...............it is amazing when you watch a program , and I personally can see how it has programed us to  take it in stride when it does happen, me thinks something fishy was goin on here, you think?

Yeah, agreed.    I think that sci fi predicted almost everything that we now have, from cell phones to flat screen tvs and all kinds of other things.

My father always believe in Roswell.  And yeah, if the government knew years ago that something was going on, and then use a TV program for the mythology, to help us prepare, that makes lots of sense.  Those 4 light formations - how many times do they have to be seen, by various and sundry folks, all over the globe?  I just hope those "others" are benevolent ;~)  And that they want to get rid of Bush and all his ilk!!!

Oh good.  I can't wait.  Things are still horrible around here, but by next week, things might begin to lessen.  Yesterday we had the tree people out.  We have a hundred year old HUGE tree out back and the landscaper wanted the canopy lifted.  I've been having problems because she is sure about how she wants things done and actually, she's right, but I've had to let go let go let go...anyway, we've been continuing to work really hard 6 days a week, with up to 4-5 people here on any given day.  On Sunday, we fall apart.  I think next week, like by Thursday, things might calm down and I can use a laugh, big time!  How are you doing?

ok will call then. I love you and think of it as a breast lift for the tree (lol) my brother is dating a woman 17 younger than he. oh and we rented Hairspray... great fun.

Re: Stephen Hawking - Alone in Universe?
I loved Hairspray.  I wish my brother would date someone 17 years younger.  That's a good image for the tree.  I always HATE to take anything off of any plant or tree and so everything gets like a jungle.  This is all a good lesson.  My poor tree ;~)

I subscribe to the "a whole universe lives on my nose" school of thought. Relative to possible universes, we are small. Relative to us, the aliens on our noses are small. How intelligent are they? It would not be difficult to be more intelligent than we are.
