I have been reading a lot of information that Israel was preparing a major military offensive in Gaza due to the Hamas firing of Qassam rockets. The Israeli generals were convinced the longer the commitment to wait the more Israeli casualties would occur.

Thus I was a bit surprised to read from Fox News that Olmert agreed to a Gaza Cease Fire offered by Palestine Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. I suspect some major arm twisting behind the geo-political scenes were applied by the Bush Administration.

There still is no agreement on returning Hamas kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Also Hamas supreme leader Khaled Mashaal has made it clear from the Hamas point of view there is a deadline on peace talks. If the talks are not agreeable to Mashaal, Hamas will resume attacking innocent Israeli civilians.

"I suspect some major arm twisting behind the geo-political scenes were applied by the Bush Administration."

Really? What inside information do you have that nobody else does?

Re: Olmert Agrees to Cease Fire
Actually brandre I absolutely have no inside information.

The Bush Administration has been in the forefront of advocating Israel to give up land for peace. The Bush Administration arm twisted (or perhaps convinced) Sharon to move ahead to a Palestinian State at the cost of Land. Olmert is merely continuing that policy.

I am of the opinion that Israel should not give up any more land, especially Jerusalem. Giving up Land will not bring peace but inspiration to bring Israel down. biblically Israel is entitled to more land than the little sliver they are so valiantly trying to hold onto to keep in existence a Jewish self-determining home.

I agree that Israel shoudl not give up land. Now for the statement "The Bush Administration has been in the forefront of advocating Israel to give up land for peace. The Bush Administration arm twisted (or perhaps convinced) Sharon to move ahead to a Palestinian State at the cost of Land. Olmert is merely continuing that policy."

I can;t substanitate that in any way...

Re: Olmert Agrees to Cease Fire
Brandre don't get me wrong. I am a Bush supporter! However he has highly supported the creation of a sovereign Palestinian State. A Palestinian State with their own Army backed by other Islamofascists cannot be a good thing for Israel. I am more Pro-Israel than I am pro-Bush. I am pro-Bush because he is the only Western Leader who has the gumption to stand up to Islamofascism. I also think President Bush will now be hampered by the recent turn of political events in the 2006 election. Pro-Arab Republicans are trying to influence President Bush to engage Syria and Iran in a diplomatic discussion of bringing peace to the Middle East. He may have to listen to garner any political consensus in the last two years of his Presidency.
