So I'm in the process of loosing weight after a year of heck helped me gain weight. I'm actually heavier then I have ever been and it amuses me a bit: I thought I was overweight in highschool. Yet I walked 3 miles a day and listed weights every other day...

What a difference being a little bit older makes ;)

When I started this I decided to buy myself an Ipod shuffle, something that could with stand me doing something like dropping it on the ground, then kicking it, then having to spend 30 minutes finding the mp3 player.

Believe me, I've been known to do such things. I've learned to value things that are indestructable, heh.

I have started out by walking. Since I work the overnight shift at my job, I decided to do my walking towards the evening. I hope to get back to the point where I work out (with weights,) but right now I am taking baby steps. Almost literally, I don't have a very long stride ;) I'm going to ignore weight loss for awhile and just see what happens by eating right and exercising...

It should be fun.

Right?

Re: Exercising
It WILL be fun! It doesn't take long to start feeling better and energized, and that alone is worth the effort!

I struggled with an underactive thyroid and stupid doctors for YEARS, and gained 50 pounds in the process. Now that I found a doctor with a brain and have the thyroid working again, it's still been HELL to get this weight off. It's FINALLY coming off, but oh so slowly. I found walking to be the best exercise ever! I walk a minimum of 30 mins a day EVERY day at at least 2mph. I can walk much farther outdoors -- it gets so BORING indoors on the treadmill! I was once a real fitness fanatic and worked with weights and running. Still love the weights (I still prefer free weights to these fancy new machines!) but had to stop running because of knees.

Yeah, what a difference age makes.

Re: Exercising
I've always abhorred running; The bouncing up and down thing never fit me very well Loved free weights though and walking.  I don't have an overactive thyroid, but more of a love of food and lack of physical exercise.  I love watching movies, playing video games, etc... And the last year of my life I gained so much weight it is embarassing, really.

As for keeping myself amused while I walk, I have an Ipod shuffle that I can put music or audio books on.

My first walk was only 15 minutes, but man my right leg muscles started screaming at me. I guess I know which leg I favor when I walk now..  My roomie said I need to start striding more, I tend to walk in small steps.

We'll see if that helps.

All I know is I'm taking baby steps until I get used to exercising again.

Re: Exercising
me and my coworkers were just talking today about being overweight, dieting and such.  in some cultures, the bigger you are, the higher social status it represents.   i guess it's linked with abundance of food and wealth maybe...who knows.  heh.

eating right and keeping fit sounds good.   i think it's better to portion control well rounded meals than eat cardboard and greens all day.  blech...why live if ur going to torture yourself like that?   lol  plus the more fit you are, your body will burn calories more efficiently..  now i should go do some walking too.   i have baby steps too, but even worse..at a slug's pace! hah.
well, hope u have a good time with it.  maybe find something fun for exercise.  my problem is just making it a routine part of my day cuz i love to come home and crash.

Re: Exercising
well I'm doing it before I go to work, so that would put it in the evening. One reason is that it is freakin' HOT out here during th summer, and no way I am walking in the middle of the day. And I'm not doing it after I get home in the morning, I'm usually to exhausted.

So the evenings, around 7 o'clock will do nicely.

My biggest problem is will power, but I'm working on that

Re: Exercising
yeah that's another reason not to... if it's uncomfortably hot who wants to generate more heat...  so where do we get will power?   Smileycan u buy that in the store?

Re: Exercising
I'd have to say my will power comes from God, cause I don't think I have any of my own heh.  I pray before I head out or else I think I'd sit on my butt and just ignore it (Like I've done so much in the past.)

I must say I've been walking for two days straight now (Woo what a record ) and my calves are feeling it...

Re: Exercising
Well I wish you all the best; I am in the same boat, and I think I am finally able to go back to Curves for Women (power exercises) after first being sick, pulling a tendon in my leg, and finally going to see my kids for five days.

I am a diabetic, have high blood pressure as also needing the hike in my morale for mental reasons--many reasons why I need to do well...so I will let you know how it goes, from time to time.  I do, however need to watch the way I eat as well.  But, as you say, it should be a lifestyle and not a diet.  I did so well back in March when first diagnosed..but with the depression and all that, I got out of whack.....

So, you go boy!

Re: Exercising
So true; we will feel much better in a few months' time!

Re: Exercising
I hope to feel better sooner then that, honestly.  If I'm walking every day I better see some results earlier then a few months..heh.  I know I will too.

Re: Exercising
Good for you. Up until a couple of years ago I was really good about working out, dancing, stationary bike, walking, walking the dogs, at least 3 times a week. Then I got a job in a fast food restaurant (I didn't need to exercise after that, the weight melted right off) and then a job that involved heaving lifting all day long.

Since last summer though, no matter how high I have the air turned on, I get so over-heated. It makes working out like torture. I like my belly-dancing video though, its so much fun, so I am trying to get back into it asap. Your post was kind of inspirational so I think I will try it tonight and see if I can't survive the heat...

Re: Exercising
Well I don't know about myself; I grew up in a desert climate so maybe the heat doesn't faze me as much...or maybe I just don't mind sweat..heh. One thing is to not push yourself. I think our instinct is to work out until we are absolutely exhausted and burnt out; but that isn't what we should be doing..especially when we are first starting off...or restarting.

I roomed with a coach for awhile and he gave me a bunch of tips...like get the heart pumping but not to the piont it feels like it is going to pop out of your chest heh.
