Wow! Hope your flight went well and that you're already enthralled with your new surroundings!
Good entry, and while it might not be appropriate for some abroad-blogs - in your case the issues of urban sprawl are an integral part of the issues you'll be examining in your studies! Which is pretty kewl I do think! Yay!

I'm excited just reading this. I love that feeling of anticipation mixed in with a little bit of anxious energy before a big trip. I had it when I did an exchange program to Switzerland at 16.
Enjoy every second
How was Switzerland? And I am planning on enjoying every second. I left my group and decided to stalk a group a chickens when I heard some rustling ahead in the Valencia orange trees and saw my first iguana!!!
Switzerland was amazing - coming from Australia, even though we have areas with snow, I'd never really had a 'real' winter like that. It was very exciting - although the language was an issue at first, I soon navigated through.
Take heaps of photos and post them!
awww... that's so cute that your family left you that envelope. You should feel good that you have such a wonderful family. You'll see them again soon enough.
We're all waiting to hear about your experiences in Costa Rica. Post again soon!

I will try to post soon...The center is amazingly beautiful. They let us pick the fruit straight from the trees and we can use the herb garden to make tea. (One of the leaders knows all about alternative medicine). Hope everything is going well at UMBC!
Airports, despite their best efforts to remain sterile transportation centers, are often the site of a lot of emotion. Don't worry about being alone; we're all with you in our thoughts. Just remember that. And I'm sure you'll make friends quickly. Especially with your personality.
Suburban sprawl, well, that's what this country was founded on. Everyone who came to this country was looking to own his little plot of land that he could call his own. It's an integral part of the American dream that all new immigrants have in their vision of a better future. Some things don't ever change.

That vision of a better future is great for people to possess however, that vision can evolve to exclude the need for a plot of land. We no longer expect our own 40 acres.
Making friends has been very easy here because the people as so sweet!
