If you have a handful of people in your life who you can really trust, you're lucky.  Most people think they can trust everyone, but they have no concept of trust and personal honor.  Dealing with such people beyond ambiguous discussions about the weather really is quite pointless.

Be true to your beliefs and your self.  The soulless people around you can rob you of dignity, wealth, and reputation, but they can never take your soul and beliefs.  If you keep those two things, you can do whatever you want to do.  Be willing to make sacrifices (move, work junk job, volunteer), and you can still win.
