Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) (2006)

Plot Synopsis: East Berlin, November 1984: Five years before its downfall, the former East-German government ensured its claim to power with a ruthless system of control and surveillance. Party-loyalist Captain Gerd Wiesler hopes to boost his career when given the job of collecting evidence against the playwright Georg Dreyman and his girlfriend, the celebrated theater actress Christa-Maria Sieland. After all, the "operation" is backed by the highest political circles. What he didn't anticipate, however, was that submerging oneself into the world of the target also changes the surveillance agent. The immersion in the lives of others--in love, literature, free thinking and speech--makes Wiesler acutely aware of the meagerness of his own existence and opens to him a completely new way of life, which he has ever more trouble resisting. But, the system, once started, cannot be stopped. A dangerous game has begun.

Sojo's take: This movie was an incredibly powerful story. I don't think many Americans really understand the price others have paid to gain the freedoms we enjoy every day. YOU'VE GOT TO SEE THIS MOVIE.

oh, thank you!!! I agree with you totally about the price of freedom. Somehow, having a modicum of it has made us take what we have enjoyed for granted. I just read of enterprising bloggers in China circulating democracy and individual rights posts and petitions despite the government's(and Microsofts') best efforts to contain it with censoring software. I am putting this on the netflix queue.

I too will check this movie out, because you recommended it. We don't know the half of the "quiet desperation" in which others live out their lives.
Regarding this particular film though, I remember when X and I, and another German guy, saw the Brandenburg Gate for the first time (1997) - the Berlin Wall ran between the Gate and West Berlin - and both of these guys had tears in their eyes, saying they never thought they'd be able to see the Brandenburg Gate, never thought Germany would unify again. (As for me, I couldn't help thinking of all the photos I've seen of the Gate with Nazi soldiers marching through it, with the big swastika on top...it was truly a sobering moment to think that I was standing where a lot of history had been made...)

I think you'll like it. There are some 'R' rated scenes but it is part of the story...it's all about how things really ARE, no pretense or censorship. Very sobering film.

How odd, this film keeps showing up in places I do not intend lately, I need to see it. I mean, I am a huge foreign flick fan, and it won the Academy Award that year. I guess I will have to rent it, eh?
