On 60 Minutes last night, Morley Safer interviewed Dr. Aubrey de Grey and discussed with other luminaries of the scientific community how it might be possible for today’s baby boomers to enjoy radically longer healthy lives, eventually rolling back the clock to regain youthfulness. It was a fascinating discussion, going into the details of the aging process, what causes it and how it may be reversed with new scientific discoveries. Nothing makes me feel quite as alive as scientific stuff discussed in laymen’s terms!

Anyway, the idea of saving 100,000 lives per day through such rejuvenating technologies raises a whole new set of problems. Mankind is already seriously depleting the earth’s resources as it is, can you imagine 100,000 more lives per day being added into the pot?! And wouldn’t that be limiting the evolution of man’s whole development to the lower plane of mortality?

Very likely, were I to have the choice between normal aging and extended longevity complimented with the health of my youth, I’d likely jump all over it, but would that really be a ‘good’ thing? Immortality is one thing, but that wouldn’t really BE immortality, that would be simply EXTENDED mortality. And I just can’t see man’s present mortal existence as being the highest thing to be reached for. Or, on the other hand, would extending mortality eventually LEAD to true immortality and the ultimate union of mortality and IMmortality? Yet, all that said, I confess I’d be amongst the first to reach for it, if I deemed it to be within my grasp…regardless of WHAT it might lead to. I’m sort of rambling here aren’t I?

Good LORD, such heavy thoughts of mortality and immortality, life and death, the longevity of the earth. You know, if we’re going to go this route, there should be research of equal intensity in the area of increasing the longevity of the EARTH we live on…or in finding another suitable planet for us immortal baby boomers to move to once we’ve drained the earth of ITS sustenance.

Read about de Grey’s research and other related topics here. Do YOU want to live forever? As for me at this insanely early hour in the morning for a day off, just a bit more coffee and I’ll be able to solve this complex dilemna…

None of this is a good idea.  Sounds like some sicence fiction shit, don't it?  The actually had a scenaoio like this on a star trek movie, and it went haywire.  I wouldn't wanna be their experiment, that's for damn sure!!

Re: Do you want to live forever?
I love life! But I'd want to live longer only if I were in pretty good health and had enough money to get by. My family is quite long-lived on both sides (both parents are still alive and well at 76, my youngest grandparent died at 81 and the oldest at 94) so I'm hoping for another 30 years anyway! Besides, I'm supposed to be looking forward to heaven!
Did anyone on 60 Minutes say who was going to pay for these aging boomers to live all these extra years? And even if a boomer is healthy enough to continue working at age 75, there are millions of younger people who need jobs to support families. Then what?  I'm one who hopes to still be working at 70 or past it--I've got to! I don't have a pension now since I've worked part-time for the past 18 years and am divorced!

Excellent point! How do we support everyone with such limited resources? And what about the afterlife? Those who live by faith would certainly look forward to (for lack of a better phrase) of heavenly or other worldly existences.

Yep. At Walmart there's a delightful lady who answers the phone and works at the dressing rooms in the women's dept. She's got to be at least 80 and has been with Walmart 15 years (she wears a 15 year pin), and I stop and speak to her whenever I'm in there. She works full time--because she has to. I don't know the situation exactly, but good grief! At Target there's another very nice lady who's 85--she told me--who works the jewelry counter.  She too is there because she has to be. They are both widows. In a way it's sad, because I think these ladies should enjoy some leisure during their "golden years."
Regarding the afterlife--I believe I'm going to heaven when I die, and therefore death doesn't scare me--the manner of death does though--but my life has been a blast so far and I don't want to leave it til I have to!

Re: Do you want to live forever?
Thanks for asking such questions!

It all depends on the quality of life when I'm older. It won't help me to be youthful but have a mind that keeps up, or the money or family to enjoy my longer life.

Still, I like the idea of at least having a say in the length of time I'd be alive, whether to expect near 100 or 200...

Whoa! I dont know. I mean I would love to turn back the clock, so to speak but is that really what I would be doing? I dunno. You're right this is heavy. At the rate that we consume our resources we would have a serious problem trying to find space and sustenance for all.  I guess we could consume less and focus on increasing our agricultural health, (farmers keep us eating after all) but that would mean what for our SUV habit?  Ugh. good post, I have to think about this and get back with you.
