there's nothing like being on your knees on a sunday morning to help a girl find humility.  i'd like to tell you i was in church, but instead i was scrubbing my kitchen floor.  by hand.  whilst on my knees.  i don't suppose the Lord minded the soapy bleach cloths in my hand as we chatted; i may even get extra points for spiritual multi-tasking.

scrubbing the floor is a quiet, meditative task and it gave me time to think of and pray for the people in my life.  i know a lot of people and i had  2/3 of a spotless kitchen floor by the time i'd finished.  the juxtaposition of a clean floor next to a dirty one pretty much sums up the reality of human existance:  the clean and the dirty, the pretty and the ugly, the shiny and the seedy.  for a while, you can erase the dirt and the ugliness and the pawprints from the floor, but they will always re-manifest themselves.  still, it's worth the feeling of cleanliness to repeatedly perform the task, to feel...if only for a lil while...that you're winning the war against the dirt.

our lives are like that too...we struggle to maintain clean floors, only to find them tracked with outside dirt and dust bunnies in short order.  as much as we'd like to lock the doors against the outside world in an attempt to keep the dirt and dust at bay, we can't.  we must step foot outside, wear our clothes and live our lives, even if it means acquiring spots and smudges and the occasional cobweb.

and that, the Lord informs me, is why he invented soap, bleach and prayer...so that there is always a way to come clean.

i find that when i'm busy working with my hands, whether it's something domestic or with the critters or with plants,  that my mind is more open to the spiritual.  not only that, but i figure the Lord knows he's got me where he wants me....busy with my hands and not going anywhere soon.  talk about your captive audience....

I don't mind a little dust or dirt- I just gotta find a way to keep people with doodoo on their shoes from walking 'cross my floor...lol  Smiley

that's easy:  make them take their shoes off at the doorway and give them slippers, as in the oriental cultures.  *g*

OK, this was so simple, and yet SO good, I seriously think you ought to sell it to a greeting card company. But seriously, SNuggs, no kidding - I can SO relate to his! WHat a superb little snippet this was! LOVE it, wish I could nominate hundreds of times.

Well, it was either enlightenment or bleach fumes. I'm going to think that my sis had a zen moment and say it was the former.

Well, today is MY cleaning day. I feel not so much zen as just TIRED. Rough weekend, now cleaning day. Anyway, I actually do feel the way that YOu do usually. I like " putting my universe right", even if ten minutes later, a dog pees on the newly washed floor. ~SIGHS~

Re: finding spiritual peace in the kitchen floor
i'm feeling your pain.  molly waited a whole 8 hours before she christened the kitchen floor with an accident.  actually, she's very good and rarely has them....i just didn't see her head into the kitchen; the only reason she goes in there is to head for the door or to eat or hope to eat.  and yesterday, all the floors were immaculate and fur free....*snorts*  today they look like they haven't been done in 3-4 days.  ai ai aieeeeeeeeee!

btw, i'm sure you'll appreciate my newest blog.
