So now that I've provided a "little" bit of background I can go on forth and start making updates about my training. I want to also mention that I welcome any and all questions, those that might be over my head as far as running and training knowledge go, could probably be answered by my coach (Lorraine) who has graciously offered to do so.
Below is a "typical" week straight out of my running log. My weeks end on Saturdays and start again on Sundays. Sundays are traditionally the LONG RUN day.

Week (#28) December 16th - 22nd

Sunday
: Distance: 23 miles @ 1:20PM, Pace: 6:20 Run Duration: 2h26mins (33 Degrees)

Monday: Distance: 4.5 miles @ 8:15AM, Distance: 13.50 miles, Pace: 6:24

Tuesday: Workout @ Eldorado Springs. 2 x 2 miles. Undulating road with Lorraine following & giving splits in car.  Avg pace = 4:50.  Distance: 11 miles total for day

Wednesday: Distance:
6.5 miles @ 8:10AM, Distance: 8.0 miles @ 4PM, Pace: 6:20

Thursday: Distance:
20 miles, Pace: 6:15, Run Duration: 2h05mins (43 Degrees)

Friday
: Distance:
11 miles @ 8AM, Distance: 12.50 miles @ 3:45PM

Saturday: Workout @ Rally Sports Gym (Treadmill - too much snow/ice outside).
5 mile tempo (cruise effort). Avg pace = 5:20. Distance: 12 miles total for day.

Week's Total Mileage
: 122.00
(avg: 17.43 miles per day)

So there you have a typical week. The mileage isn't ever set in stone, but is rather a range, (100 - 120 miles) which can be added to or taken away from, depending on how I'm feeling after any given workout or run. Lorraine will usually have me take 1 down week every 4 - 6 weeks (as low as 45 - 90 miles), again the exact amount depends on how I'm feeling at the time.
The long run as I mentioned is typically on Sundays, and then I'll have another mid-week long run or medium long run. During base phase -which I'm still somewhat in- I'll have the majority of my runs be very hilly. This means that if I start from the house (aprox 5,460ft elevation) I'll head up another 1,000ft or so higher. When the weather allowed for it, I would drive up to Magnolia Road, which sits over 8,000ft and climbs even further.
Along with the running, my weeks normally have 2 - 3 days of core work (I never lift any weights) and 2 - 3 days of hill sprints/drills & strides. This is done in order to work on turnover and strengthen the legs for the eventual transition to track workouts and later racing (primarily the 3,000m Steeplechase).

Peace & Love

Re: Typical Week
Thank you very much. Appreciate the support. Adam (my best friend) can attest to the journey (or journeys) I've taken in the past years or since H.S. He's been there basically since day one. I always welcome any (and new) support!

Re: Typical Week
Wow. I am thinking now that I should be running more. I like running and I could be in better shape, haha. Good job.

Re: Typical Week
Well good luck and get out and and enjoy it. It's good to set little goals. This time of year is always the best, but easiest time to get in some good cardio. Winter's when we're more sedentary (generally speaking), which is why we should get out more, even if it's running (or swimming) indoors.

Re: Typical Week
Thank you. I will definately push myself to get moving. I agree, people tend not to do much in the winter, from what I've seen. I skate once a week but I know that's far from the amount of exercise I need every week. None of my friends really care about being healthy so that makes it difficult. But I will not give up!

Re: Typical Week
Hah sounds good. Baby steps right? You ice skate indoors or outdoors? Just asking cuz I used to play Ice Hockey (believe it or not hahah), and I loved playing outdoors aka Pond Hockey more vs. indoor more groomed hockey. Anyways keep up the good work. The toughest step is often the 1st one to get out the door. I know that's the case w/ me at times....especially in the winter when you know it's not exactly pleasant out there.
DarkSalem on
Re: Typical Week
Yeah, definately. I skate indoors because I don't live near any ponds. I used to skate outdoors at my dads but not anymore. I know! It is so hard sometimes just to force yourself to get out there, but once you're there it feels great. You just have to keep thinking of how its always worth it. It's always worth it, you just need to get out there!

Re: Typical Week
Bingo, Bango mate there you have it. How about you keep ME posted on your progress as well. Sound good? Everyones got a journey or "Odyssey" as I put it. You got a goal in mind or just overall "get out the door more often"-ness. Yah that's the offical name btw. jk

Re: Typical Week
Haha. Sure. That's exactly it! I think maybe having someone for support could help. I've never had any encouragement from my friends. I can do it!

Re: Typical Week
Wow!

That's a LONG week!

My little sister (junior in high school) runs track and cross country and I thought her workouts were brutal!!

Best of luck to you and I hope you make it!

Welcome

sirrunsalot on
Re: Typical Week
Yeah thanks a lot. When I was a junior in High School I practically didn't run at all (outside of team training). I think I ran at most 42 miles a week when I was a Senior and thought that was a LOT. It's all about gradually building up the mileage and strength while having a good time doing it. If I hadn't followed that general guideline, chances are I wouldn't still be doing it now.
hipmama24 on
Re: Typical Week
Yea that sounds like what my sister's coach tells her team. That would be the only way to do it, otherwise it'll be too much and you probably will want to quit. At one of her cross country meets they were running in the rain and on hills and  yea it was hard for her, but she told me they were used to that type of terrain from practice...boy you runners have a lot of tenacity! I ran track in like middle school I think, I was really good at hurdles and relay, but then I got bit by the soccer bug, so I quit. It'll be interesting for us here to track your journey and progress, so keep us posted!!
sirrunsalot on
Re: Typical Week
I appreciate it. It's not gonna be easy, but it'll be fun as hell too! I'll try to keep my entries interesting, especially at the moment, when it's cold and snowy outside and I'm not doing too much other than surviving the winter. Runners (and many/any top athlete) have to have a great deal of "tenacity" otherwise you'll surely fold along the way. I grew up w/ Football....or SOCCER as my # 1 sport (in Spain), so I definitely understand how you got bit by said bug.

Re: Typical Week
"Surviving the winter" is right- it is a windy 25 degrees here in Michigan and it's not getting warmer. Over the weekend it was single digits. I'm still trying to figure out what I am doing in a cold climate. I was born in Jamaica and grew up in Florida...yea I know...what was I thinking?? LOL

I was reading your entry about your toe. Did you ever figure out what was wrong? Hope it gets better and the weather gets a bit warmer, although with the weather being so cold you get a bit of a break right? Or do you train indoors- like a indoor track?

Have a great  rest of the week!
sirrunsalot on
Re: Typical Week
Yeah we had a real up and down weekend. Saturday was way warmer than expected (low 40's), but then Sunday was pretty cold (low 20's) and then yesterday was just ridiculous in the single digits for most of the day (My car was reading around 8 degrees during the middle of the day and as low as 3 by the time I was heading home from the gym @ 8pm).

Being that I'm a summer lover, I often wonder how I manage to survive these winters, but I guess you just get hardened by it....think of the consequences if you don't right? As for my toe, we believe I simply just strained it while doing a series of drills and exaggerated bounding and jumps. That's the story I'm sticking with at least, as I/we couldn't figure anything else out.

When it gets cold like this, I simply layer on more. If the footing outside is real dodgy, then we'll go indoors to the treadmill. I've already done a few workouts on them thus far this winter. Once I start more serious speed workouts then yeah I'd imagine I'd go indoors to C.U's track but hopefully it won't come to that.
hipmama24 on
Re: Typical Week
Yea I guess your body just gets conditioned and accepts the change, although your mind doesn't. I still love summer weather also, in fact I don't see myself permanently staying here in Michigan. I will definitely be moving back to Florida or somewhere warmer when my daughter gets older and settling down there.

A strained toe...you learn something new everyday.

Hopefully you won't have to stay indoors too much. Yea it would be a break from the terrain outside (I'm sure running inside is more ah comfortable), but then you don't have the beautiful scenery to admire (winter can sometimes be beautiful) and the cold air to fill your lungs.

Re: Typical Week
Yah i hear ya, but trust me "THIS" guy doesn't enjoy running indoors (treadmills) at all. No matter how fit I get, those treadmills turn me into a cry baby. I just get bored. My personal record is just over 2hours on one (21 miles) last winter, and that's because we were getting absolutely dumped on here. I don't plan on challenging that anytime soon.

Strained toe... I know it sounds soooo made up and also like a "So what" type of set back, but trust me you never realize how much you use "x" body part till you bang it up good and it's sore at every movement.

I like Florida....okay I like South Beach. The only other parts of Florida I've been to (like 16 years ago almost...) were Orlando or wherever Disney World/Land(?) and Universal Studios are. Good times though!
hipmama24 on
Re: Typical Week
I just get TIRED on the treadmill- too tired to be bored.   Two hours on the treadmill?! You're a good one-lol. I guess that's why you are the runner and not me.

Yea it kind of does sound lame, BUT I'll take your word for it. Just because it isn't common doesn't mean it can't happen.

Everyone likes South Beach! Disney World  and Universal are the greatest! People used to think I went to Orlando all the time, because I only lived like 2/3 hours away- I wish! I've been a bunch of times though, always fun! My favorite city in Florida is Miami- I didn't grow up there, but I love it.

I was thinking yesterday about your blog and my sister's track/cross country teams and runners in general and how I need to get off my butt and do some running. SO I'm thinking, maybe, I may try mixing my walking with running or something, like ah I don't know a mile just to start?? I walk about 3 miles every morning, but I think I may kick it up notch. Your blog has inspired me. I'm not promising anything miraculous or awe inspiring like you are doing, but I will make an effort!
sirrunsalot on
Re: Typical Week
Wow I'm honored/touched if my blog -especially now in the early stages- has inspired ya already! Every great journey begins w/ one step! I know it's cheesy as hell, but it's true too! So yeah get out there and set mini-goals and before you know it you'll be surprising yourself.

Hell, once upon a time (in H.S) I would've died if I had to run 5 or 10 miles, now I can do that before breakfast and not think anything of it. It's about the gradual build up.

Miami rocks! I trust that I'll be there soon again. Hopefully before 2008 ends? How's your sister's running coming along? Anyways good job on the motivation and good luck w/ the baby steps.

Re: Typical Week
Yeah, I noted you in my blog.
I'm gonna start off real slow and then build from there. Walking to running I think is more difficult than most would think.

My sister has a meet today- one of the local ones. It doesn't count towards anything, but it's good practice to get them back into to groove of things.  I'm not sure if she's going tonite or not. It's weird because she's done track for three years and then her coach is like join cross country, which back then she was a sprinter, not a distance runner. So when he asked her she was like, "Are you kidding me?" But now she loves it and she gets some really good times on her runs. I'm not sure what she's doing for track season this year...we'll see. Sometimes, I would go walk while she runs, I may pick that up again. Notice I'm saying "may" to everything- lol- I am queen of procrastination.

I'm going back home (Jamaica) hopefully in March, so that'll be fun! Oh! Question. So what do you have to do to qualify for the olympics? And you're trying to qualify to be on the american team as well as qualify personally?
sirrunsalot on
Re: Typical Week
Just read your blog, good stuff.

I'm attempting to qualify for the 3,000m Steeplechase (7.50 laps around the track while jumping a total of 35 times over 3foot barriers....one w/ a long water pit). I represent Equatorial Guinea in Africa. My mom was born there. I was born in Barcelona, Spain. My dad was born in the U.S.

Quite the tale eh....?
hipmama24 on
Re: Typical Week:
Thanks!

Yea that IS quite the tale! I've never heard of a steeplechase in running. I only know of the one with the horses and first I was like wait a minute...lol.  "35 times over 3 f oot barriers" -damn! Yep, Monday-I got this- it's all me baby!! (I'm trying to motivate myself for Monday.) LOL.   Africa and Spain...so let me know when your autobiography comes out.
sirrunsalot on
Re: Typical Week:
yah I'd like to race as fast as horses, but we'll see one step at a time. Hope your weekend was good and look fwd to hearing that you got out there and went after "it" on Monday.

My autobiography will surely come out sometime in the distant future, when I've actually accomplished something worth putting down on paper and thus charging people to read it.
