G'day and Goodbye....

First of all I'd like to appologize for waiting this long to make this entry. I have been putting off this last entry for quite some while. The long and short of it is, that I have failed (for now at least) to qualify for my 2nd Olympic Games. As you could tell from my last entry, things weren't going to well with my health when I was back in Europe.

So a brief recap of what's gone on since that last entry:

I eventually got over the food poisoning. I had never experienced it before and thus didn't know what to expect as far as recovery times. Needless to say my stomach got better well before the rest of my body/head did. The day after the race in The Netherlands, I could only make it 7.50 minutes in my run, when I had to turn back. I spent the next week ONLY being able to run between 30 - 45 minutes before I would feel rather week/dizzy.

Time wasn't on my side, and in the end I wasn't able to race at Heusden (although a lot of deserving athletes were turned away this year by the meet organizer). This essentially ended my last hope @ Beijing. I decided to take a stab at one more Olympic birth in the 1500 instead. That also was a bit too optimistic as all year/season long I had conditioned my body to handle 68 to 70 second pace per 400 meters, instead of the 58 to 59 second per 400 meter pace I'd now need. I even when as far as extending my trip in Europe by an extra week so I could get extra rest and one las shot @ the 1500.

In the end it was not to be. Sometimes once's got to face the music. So unfortunately this tale will not have the ending I would've wanted. I headed to Europe a little over a month ago with high hopes and good spirits, I had a plan and it went awry prettty quickly. I tried to adjust and face the obstacles (no pun intended) head on with a positive attitude, but eventually I had to just let go.

I left Europe last Tuesday (July 29th) to head back to the U.S. I was and felt severly dissapointed and overwhelmingly crestfallen. I've worked so hard and been so focused the last 4 years for this one goal and to have it come down to circumstances that were somewhat out of my hands, was too much to handle. I could always accept failing, but to have my last few attempts be at a state of being less than 100% was really a tough pill to swallow.

So now I'm currently in New Jersey visiting my mother who's back in the U.S and my grandmother who's in the U.S for the 1st time ever. I'm taking (or will attempt) 1 month off completely from running. I have never taken this much time off since I started running competitively (8 + yrs now?). I hope this break will recharge both my mental and physical batteries, as I arrived back in the U.S severely down and sad.

I'm clearly at a cross roads in my athletics life, or at least I feel/felt that's the case. I'm young enough (26 yrs old) to be in this game for another 4 - 8 yrs (basically two more Olympic cycles), but I'm also (for now at least) mentally drained from the single minded focus I invested into the Beijing Games. I hope this break from running will do me some good and really light that fire in me again. I wouldn't want to go out on a down note.

The next step as of now will be to return to Boulder by the begining of September and resume training. I have far too many goals out there to just hang 'em up. I'll sit down and look over the past year's training and see what could/can be done different. Possibly tweak some workouts here and there differently as well. Next year is also a big year. Berlin, Germany will be hosting the 2009 IAAF World Track and Field Championships. Basically the World Championships are the 2nd biggest show on earth for us Track Athletes outside of the Olympics of course. I'll refocus my efforts/goals for that event.

Nothing will ever replace not making Beijing, but I have (slowly over the past week) started to come to terms with that. I can't look towards 2009 and beyond (2012 Olympics in London) till I've fully come to terms with this year's events. It's been a long and tough ride. Many ups and of course downs. I will remember both and take many lessons away. I will cheer on my fellow athletes and mates that will participate in the Opening ceremonies and compete in their respective events/sports over the next few weeks.

Lastly I'd like to thank a few (I clearly won't name everyone) people that have been helpful along the way, not just in this year but over the past few.

My parents: John & Nuria Caracciolo

Coach (past/present): Steve Clarke ('03 - '05), Brad Hudson ('05 - 07), Lorraine Moller

Friends/Family (some but clearly not all): Clay & Sky Hope, Carlos "Dadito" Mandje, Henry Caracciolo, Al Garraffa, Adam Ostrow, Ramat & Tanimu, John Dinozzi, David Krummenacker, Bolota Asmeron, The Faraci & Ziminsky Families, Ross Schubert, Spencer Casey, Paul Hamblyn, The Torri twins: Jorge & Ed, Jason Hartman, all of my kiwi training mates (you guys/girls know who you are), Yommi O, Myra Moller, Murray Taylor, Jasmine Moller, Harlan Smith, (Virtually everyone in Boulder -truly a great community for athletes), Samia Akbar, Steve Sherer, Delwyn Moller & fam., Steve Sumner, Sunny Turner, Danny over @ Newton Co., Nobby, Rod Dixon, Gary Moller, Bruce Moller, Fasil Bizuneh, Stefano Galli, Franki Poli, Johan Mordijck (Belgium isn't Belgium w/out him) & many many more people. I'd go on, but it'd take forever and they're already playing the "wrap it up" music in my head. Ha ha just kidding.

Honestly though it's been a great ride -well not the happiest of endings, but lesson will be learned from this and I'll be a better person for it - and I couldn't have done nearly as much as I did in this past year or the last four for that matter without the support of many of the names above.

Thanks again to each and everyone of you who took this journey with me and expressed interest in my progress, whether it was in person, via e-mail or of course through Mindsay.

This will be my last entry (although I may chronicle another big journey in my athletic's life sometime between now and 2012, but only TIME will tell). I'll gladly answer any questions or reply to comments on this or via e-mail. I plan on taking a much needed vacation from my life and heading to Barcelona & Ibiza, so just in case I don't reply promptly, you'll know why.

To quote Semisonic's Closing Times, "Every new begining comes from some other begining's end...."

Peace & Love

Re: Closing Time
Oh, I am so very, very sorry.  Such stupid words, but they are sincere.  I can only imagine your state of mind as you try to get a handle on all of this.

I truly hope your journey back to a good place inside is fruitful.  You're a talented fellow and deserve all the best.

Re: Closing Time
Wow thank you very much for your very kind and warm reply. I'll surely be alright and bounce back stronger than ever. Believe it or not, I actually feel ALMOST worst for letting down the many friends/family and readers like yourself out there. Everyone loves a happy ending, luckily for me as long as I don't throw in the towell (and I don't plan on doing so) the story of my athletic's life still has a chance for bigger and better high's.

Thanks again for your kind reply.

Re: Closing Time
Thanks for sharing your story with us again on MindSay ... too bad this one didn't work out how we all hoped, but hey, at least we get to go "get it" together this weekend in NYC right?

Re: Closing Time
Mr. Ostrow, my looooooong time friend. Without you we wouldn't have the creative outlet of Mindsay to share our stories with others out there. It's been good sharing yet another chapter of my life through this venue. Mindsay/you & I have been through several of these now from college to my summer trips to Armenia, Spain and of course the most fruitful one yet..."RobInAthens".

Look fwd to catching up w/ you before my next trip and seeing you "Get It" up close!

Re: Closing Time
Wow...I missed a lot while I was gone...again!
I'm sorry that you missed out on this Olympics, but thank you so much for sharing your journey with us on here. Getting us non-runners interested in running and making attempts to run...hehe.
Hope you get some much deserved rest! All the best to you!
P.S. I am also a Semisonic fan...gotta love the '90's!

Re: Closing Time
Awesome I do love the 90's. Are we dating ourselves here by putting that out there? I mean we were born in the early-mid 80's so that's okay right? Wow getting older by the moment.

Anyways cheers for all the support along the way. Hope your own running/exercise continues to go well. I'm doing well, my woes have subsided thanks to another quick trip to Europe. This time it's been strictly for 100% fun and beach time. I'm looking fwd to getting back to training though, as I've taken close to an entire month off without training and that's twice as long as the longest break I've ever given myself.

Hope all's well with you.

Re: Closing Time
Hmm my friend I think we are dating ourselves, but it's okay though. The music was good in the '80s and I'm pretty sure we bypassed the neon glo colors, high hair, slouch socks, and all the other god awful clothing because we were still pretty young. We are '90s children...alternative rock, hackey sacks, Vans, and Oasis. When VH-1 did an "I love the '90s" special was the moment I felt truly "old".

Eh, the running hasn't been going too well. But I'm going to keep working at it. School is starting up and I start in January so life is going to start to get pretty hectic in a bit. So we'll squeeze the exercise in some where. Glad you were able to relax for a bit and enjoy yourself. Two trips to Europe...nice! All the best in your future training!

P.S. Not sure if you're fan of Oasis, but I am going to assume you are because you wouldn't be a lover of '90s music if your playlist didn't include Oasis. ( I shudder at the thought Smiley) Anyways, they are back together and have a new single out "The Shock of Lightening". I think you can check it out on You Tube. It's pretty good, they still sound like Oasis, just Oasis for 2008.

Re: Closing Time
Right on! Yah I'm a big Oasis fan. Wonderwall remains one of my fav all time songs to do Karaoke to! I have heard their new single on Itnes as well, but cheers for the heads up!
hipmama24 on
Re: Closing Time
Wonderwall is a good song! Ah right yeah it would be on Itunes as well...cool cool. Well hope your break is going well!

Re: Closing Time
Oh yeah great song! Sorry to not have replied sooner. I'm def not in the habit of checking up on this much. My break went well. Europe was awesome, and I had a great time with my friends (old/new) and family. I've been back in Boulder, CO. for about 3 weeks or so and training up again. It's going real well and I'm very excited for the next few chapters of my life. London & 2012 are too far in the horizon for me to think about just yet, but they're out there for sure. Hope you're doing well!

Re: Closing Time
That's okay. I'm not in the habit of checking my blog on a regular basis either, even when I get e-mail notifications. Glad your break went well and your training even better! Time flies too fast, so 2012 may be closer than you think. But it's nice for you to just enjoy your training without the added pressure of preparing for something as huge as the Olympics.

I'm doing well. Actually going on a mini vacation at the end of October to this ski resort. I've never been skiing (sp?) so it should be interesting. And Oasis is coming to Michigan, December 13th and I am going...nice Christmas present for myself. Smiley

Well, keep us all posted on your training when you can!

Re: Closing Time
Oh wow Oasis and SKiing? Okay well I'm only envious of Oasis. I'm going to treat myself (yes again) to another beach Vacation. This time I'll be going out towards Santa Monica/Malibu area the 1st week of Nov to surf with an old High School teammate of mine.

Training's going well. I just ran my 1st Cross Country race in over 2 yrs this morning here in Colorado. I won and might have (they'll check and get back to me) gottan a new course record. It was a helluva race though, with some tough hills, stream crossing and even a barb wire jump (I barely cleared it!).

Carpe Diem!

Re: Closing Time
Yeah I know!  I'm pretty psyched about going...to see Oasis that is. Oasis is way better than skiing, although some would differ. I am a sun girl. But I migrated up North so I guess I have to assimilate somehow, so skiing it is. I'll be sure to put pictures up so everyone can get a good laugh. :-)

"Barbed wire" huh...wow...I didn't realize cross country was so dangerous. And you barely cleared it...nice...lol. The most difficult terrain I have seen, at my sister's cross country meets, are hills and her running in the rain... Congratulations on your win! So are you using cross country to help train for track or vice versa?

Treat yourself away and soak in all that sun before the winter hits.I'm not sure what the winters are like in Colorado, but here in Michigan they can be brutal. I've never tried surfing but from what I see and read about it sounds fun. Have a great time!

Re: Closing Time
Hey I saw recently that Oasis is coming to Colorado (just outside of Boulder) on Dec. 8th. So yeah...if I'm around I'll surely try and make it.

I'm using xc to break up the dullness that can be fall/winter training. I also loooooove XC (cross country) and haven't done a "season" of it since college. I've had another race since I last replied to you and it went well (I won) but I missed the start and really really had to run hard the whole way, didn't take the lead till the last 1/2 mile or so of the race. Talk about a NAIL biter!

I'm currently laying on the couch pretty tired from a long week of life/training. I should be out and about for halloween, but I've committed to another XC race tomorrow, so will have to put the fun on the shelf for this evening!

Happy Halloween!

Re: Closing Time
Oasis is coming to Colorado...that's great! I hope you can make it!

Congratulations on winning the race, even though you had to haul ass to get to the finish line. :-)  I hope the other race went well.

My sister's cross country team went to State a week or two ago. I'm not sure what they placed but it was kind of a surreal moment for her. This is her senior year so now that the season is over it means she is that much closer to closing the door on high school and graduating.

Have a great week! Talk to you soon!

Re: Closing Time
Awesome, is your sister planning on running in college? Yeah I'm looking fwd to deciding on the concert, I think I'll definitely go, I'm on my way out of town AGAIN (Just got back from California) so I'll decide how I'm feeling after this next trip.
hipmama24 on
Re: Closing Time
Yes she is planning to run in college. She's been a bunch of nerves, trying to get all her applications in. Hope you're having fun out of town...not working too hard. Have a great Thanksgiving! I plan to fully enjoy the food and try to stay within my budget on Black Friday! :-)

sirrunsalot on
Re: Closing Time
That's awesome (for your sister). Hope your T-givings was a good one. I've been well. Training and racing. Just printing my Oasis tickets right now for this upcoming Monday. So pretty happy about that. Gonna be spending New Year's eve back in California w/ a good friend of mine and then possibly head over to Europe to race some more XC in the middle/end of Jan. Happy Holidays!
hipmama24 on
Re: Closing Time
Hey! I had a great Thanksgiving...stuffed myself with turkey and all the good stuff. Got a lot of great stuff on Black Friday. Christmas should be just as awesome. I may actually be going out New Year's Eve...normally I chill at home, so it should be fun.

So what did you think of Oasis? I wasn't impressed by their stage prescence and I had never seen them in concert before so I wasn't sure what to expect...I don't know, I had mixed feelings.

If I don't talk to you before the holidays, have a great holiday and great new year's!!!

sirrunsalot on
Re: Closing Time
Hey Happy Holidays to you too! It's funny you mentioned that about Oasis, as I TOO wasn't impressed w/ their stage presence at all. Luckily I didn't shell out too much $$ for my tickets. It turned out to be a pretty lousy night for me as we had a massive blizzard and my wallet got stolen at the concert (still have ZERO clue as to how/when). I took the bus to the concert in an effort to help out mother earth and was thus stranded well after the concert in the snow till a good friend of mine came to bail me out. So yeah that's how my Oasis experience went.

I'll be in Cali for a lil bit through new years before heading back to Europe for some good old fashion racing. Hope you enjoy your new years!
hipmama24 on
Re: Closing Time
Yeah, I've been hearing a lot of that since the concert...apparently that is how they are on stage at every concert...I wasn't digging it at all. Wow, I'm sorry to hear about your wallet. :-( A friend of mine lost his wallet too...either on the subway or in his apartment or somewhere in between those two places...sucks!  I hope that you find it.

That's cool that you took the bus. I can't remember the last time I took the bus. Stranded and massive blizzard...if there music wasn't so good, I would officially say Oasis sucks!

Have fun in Cali! Soak up some sun for me! Enjoy your New Years as well!

sirrunsalot on
Re: Closing Time
Yeah I've given up on finding the wallet, no worries have already sorted out the bank cards, I.D and a new wallet. Kinda funny that your friend thinks he might have lost their wallet in their own apt. That'd probably be the safest place to lose it though.

Cali's going well thus far. It's great to train along the beach and not have to wear gloves/hats/tights ect. Happy New Year!
hipmama24 on
Re: Closing Time
Happy New Year to you too!

Yeah he still hasn't found it yet, but he did the same things you did after he lost it, so he should be straight.

Glad everything is going well in Cali! Lucky duck that you get to be on the beach. :-)

So one of my new year's resolutions ( yes I'm a nerd, I still do those Smiley) is to get in better shape. But I need the motivation...the whole do it myself thing didn't work. So I'm trying this gym by my house, the rate isn't too bad and they have a lot of different activities so I won't get bored. Hopefully I will make it through the free trial membership...cross your fingers and toes!
