What software are you using?

No, we're not using the Dragon Warrior engine. I'm doing all the art on MS Paint, and my brother is coding in C++ from scratch. I think he borrowed some help and guidance from a Direct X manual. But all the code is from scratch... all the graphics are from scratch... all the music is composed from scratch. (At least the ones we're writing, some of the pieces our choir director friend is writing are arrangements and variations on themes.)
Dragon Warrior 3 and Final Fantasy 6 are some of our inspirations. I've looked at many other things as well (especially the original FF). My brother has been waiting earnestly for the new Dragon Quest. I might play it when he's done... but to be honest... the only rpgs I've ever finished were FF6, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound. Unless you want to include games like Zelda and Secret of Mana. Another inspiration would be Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for PS. That is one heck of a game... The items... the sheer plethora of items... and swords with NAMES. Not every sword is... Copper Sword, Fire Sword, Iron Sword, Wooden Sword, Ice Sword, and Excaliber. No... you get Badelaire, Basilard, Red Rust, Gram, Estoc, Cutlass, etc. Haha... I'm rambling...

Pretty cool. I played a game like this years ago, but I just can't remember what it was called. I hope you are successful in finishing it. Good practice, if nothing else. How many levels are you thinking of having?

It's one of those open games... it's not level-based.  Ever played Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy?

Um, nope. But do you mean it doesn't ever have to end? Alternate endings? What's the payoff? How do you win?

It does end.  There will be alternate endings.  But it's about going through dungeons and beating bosses completing puzzles and getting items.

What kind of game system will you use? Is it for pc (forgive my ignorance, software was always my deal, but I'm weak on hardware)?

It's going to be for PC... but it'll be in the style of the old nintendo games like Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy etc.
