For absolutely no good reason, I decided to check this out before work.

And yes, I watched the videos.

I have one absolutely gorgeous girlfriend who really gets into this sort of thing. She has this inexplicable fascination with some of nature's most bizarre and terrifying creatures.

Then there's me. After that first one, my desire to visit Japan has just about vanished.

After all five, I don't think I'll be eating today.

AsI'm reading the articles and watching the videos I'll post my reaction.

Hornets:
Those things are bad ASS. 30 of these Hornets crushing 30,000 Bees? Holy crap! I still want to go to Japan, but damn, I will not piss one of those things off. Just watched the video, that was amazing.

Bullet Ants:
They shriek?! Is it something like, "FOR THE COLONY!"? >.>  Otherwise, the right of manhood, yeah, no thanks. Video, who the hell comes up with those things? D:

Killer Bee:

Nothing new there, but I love reading the descriptions "before they decide it is time to completely fuck your shit up and empty the entire hive", absolutely hilarious.

Soldier Ant:
First picture scares the hell out of me, are those scythes or mandables? They're BLIND?! That's horrid! Just, ack! I'm never going to the Amazon.

Bot Fly:

Before I read the article, I've heard of these things before, but I can't remember where... oh well, time to read. Oh yeah, I remember these suckers. Didn't watch the video, when they say "DON'T FUCKING WATCH THIS" I tend to go with that. I love how they are adapted to dozens of species on the planet.

The video actually wasn't that bad for the botfly. The description of the giant hornet was what got me. "It's that big...and it sprays a fluid that is both acid and poison...and it lives EVERYWHERE on the island." But, watching the video for the hive attack, I found myself thinking, "Isn't this Lord of the Rings music?"

Heh, I loved the dramatic music, it was glorious.

Re: Bug. Bug bug bug. Bug.
I was watching it a second time, kind of thinking that the whole thing is very tilted towards the bees as being the underdogs. Really, you could repaint the whole situation, having the hornets being on a desperate search for food, being hopelessly outnumbered in battle, and after hours of fighting, finally succeeding so that they may feed their young and sustain their small colony.

There's just something about trying to paint a particular species as 'the bad guy'. I don't know that any animals have morality (though I suspect wolves, elephants, dogs, cetaceans, and possibly cats do. Eh - cats are more like, they know something is not appreciated, but they just don't care). You can't say that the hornets are doing something wrong - there is no right and wrong at their level. There is only necessity.
