That is a lovely feeling
As a Christmas gift, my father booked me a first-class ticket from Venice to Napoli last year, and it was lovely to travel that way--I took one of my textbooks (a thick and impressive tome) to read and was accorded a grudging respect by the tourist crowd when I demonstrated my stilted and imperfect Italian (confidently, so that none of them knew I was butchering the native language).
YOU KNOW A GRADUATE FROM TCD! I JUST GOT THE LETTER! AAAAAAAAAAH!

What a fantastic story!
First Class hasn't changed much from what I've seen passing through to economy and the stories I hear from the flight attendants who stay at my hotel.
I love the teacher threat! LOL

I have wished to try flying first in the years since, but it's been too sharded expensive. lol Now with a house and kids and all that, I cannot imagine spending that much money on MYSELF to travel anywhere.
I work colleague got upgraded recently. . .I don't think I could handle the excess, the extra space however would be great. She flew with Emirates and supposedly they also have a private suites (I'm guessing similar to a train) with mini-bar and full seven course meal.
I'm the same in Luxury hotels, It doesn't work for me because I always feel like I'm on the wrong side of the desk. I want to get up and help.

Neon green socks aren't in any more? Rats.
Laurie and I were, unbeknown to us, bumped up to first class once when we were missionaries. The flight attendant asked me for my coat, a $12.95 black, nylon coat from Shopko or some such place. Laurie wasn't sure I should give it to them! :-) They called us Mr. and Mrs. Thomson. Real, metal cutlery. Larger, comfortable seating. I just wish it had been on one of our flights to Asia, which is a killer. It was a relatively short flight. Then again, all flights are relatively short compared with going to Asia!
We thoroughly enjoyed our first class experience. I wish we could afford or justify the expense now, because it is pretty cool up there.

Yeah, you get REAL NAMES up there. lol Shocking.
It is fun to fly that way. Hideously expensive, but they DO take good care of you.

Great story, and what a wonderful way to "let loose" before starting your teaching career.
I'd have given anything to see the looks as your neon green self sat down in first class!
neon green in the NE? brave girl! they are not used to colors there (except all the B colors: blue, black, burgandy, brown, beige...) i went to Maine just before leaving the NE and also visited the LL Bean store. bought a crow decoy that is standing on my deck now. it was a wonderful place, with and without the stores. sorta like a first class ticket state, i think!
The B colors! Love it!
L.L. Bean was great and I enjoyed everyone I met in Maine. Massachusetts wasn't nearly so welcoming.
