Wow! That novel sounds like it has everything!
The one I just finished had a libertine Brother C. and his former lovers as well as ascetics and murder on the seas and an insane woman and and and...
It really was great.
There are a lot of Fidelma books, so I hope to get to all of them eventually.

i have read at least one of her books; i seem to remember one about a locked door murder.....
i found this for you, when i was trying to remember a series of books about a mystery/murder solving monk....

i want to say that the series i'm thinking of is either: "the sorrowful mysteries of brother athelstan" or the brother cadfael series...both are on this list. i hope you find something that sparks your interest!
Oh, Cadfael! Yes! I'm just meeting him too. Read him in a short story and then a book of short stories and recently another novel... but I can't remember the title.
Brother Athelstan I have heard of...but cannot remember where he appears.
Cadfael is charming, though. I adore him, too. I just need more Ellis Peters!
Wasn't the world interesting, back then?
I found a book called Historical Whodunnits and was just blown away by the breadth of characters I met there. Wow. I mean, I don't know that I could write this stuff (being overfond of red herrings and romance but not red herrings IN romance...wait...that too...oops?) but I do enjoy reading the historical mysteries for their attention to detail and delightful glimpses into other times.
Thank you so much for thinking of me! You are such a dear woman.

unfortunately ellis peters is no longer with us....but there are a fair amount of her numbers to get through. (((((((((((sq))))))))))) who knew when i googled that there would be an actual genre of these types of books?
If there weren't jobs and other things to do, I would do nothing but read and mysteries are always my first choice.
Sometimes I peek. If the story doesn't "captivate" me by 25% or so of the way through, I peek. Sometimes, if I've given up on the book, I read the last chapter then work backward until I know enough about the story to quit all together.
I just started The Painter of Battles by Perez-Reverte. If you've not read him you might check out his Captain Alatriste novels. They are mystery/adventures in the 1620s; Alatriste is a soldier. Perez-Reverte's first was The Flanders Panel and have been hooked ever since.
Well, you didn't steer me wrong with Odd Thomas. I'll have to give this a try too!
(Just finished Brother Odd--the BEST one yet!!!! LOVED it! Koontz just gets better and better with each Odd!)
