I have been enjoying a new heroine.

I have also been enjoying a new genre.

In general, I am not a fan of mysteries -- due to my insatiable NEED to find out how any story ends within a chapter of beginning it -- but with Sister Fidelma, there is much to interest and intrigue.

She is a religieux, a woman belonging to a holy order. The Abbey of  St. Brigid of Kildare. She is also a lawyer, qualified to the second-highest ranking in the land (the rank of anruth, which is another story for another day).  She is a princess.  She is attractive and knows it but without caring overmuch about it. She is strong.  She is brilliant. She is fallible.

If you have interests in mysteries, or in the Ireland of the 7th Century, or in the strange time of tension in Irish history where Roman and Irish church customs met and clashed, or even if you just like some cool historical fiction, I recommend the Sister Fidelma Mysteries by Peter Tremayne.  I just finished Act of Mercy and am starting Smoke in the Wind.

Of course... I have already peeked to the end of the latter book.  But! Before you start throwing things at me, know that the end of this one has little to do with the mystery and everything to do with Sister Fidelma's romance.

What? A nun having a romance?  You bet. I'm tellin' ya, Ireland in the 7th Century was pretty darn nifty.

:)  P.S. For antipodes: There's even Latin in these books, along with the Irish.  :)

Wow! That novel sounds like it has everything!

Re: Sister Fidelma
The one I just finished had a libertine Brother C. and his former lovers as well as ascetics and murder on the seas and an insane woman and and and...

It really was great.

There are a lot of Fidelma books, so I hope to get to all of them eventually.

Re: Sister Fidelma
I usually only read books with a strong heroine.  But curse me and my sci-fi fan fetish!

Re: Sister Fidelma
i have read at least one of her books; i seem to remember one about a locked door murder.....

i found this for you, when i was trying to remember a series of books about a mystery/murder solving monk....

i want to say that the series i'm thinking of is either:  "the sorrowful mysteries of brother athelstan" or the brother cadfael series...both are on this list.  i hope you find something that sparks your interest!

Re: Sister Fidelma
Oh, Cadfael! Yes! I'm just meeting him too. Read him in a short story and then a book of short stories and recently another novel... but I can't remember the title.

Brother Athelstan I have heard of...but cannot remember where he appears.

Cadfael is charming, though. I adore him, too. I just need more Ellis Peters!   Wasn't the world interesting, back then?

I found a book called Historical Whodunnits and was just blown away by the breadth of characters I met there. Wow. I  mean, I don't know that I could write this stuff (being overfond of red herrings and romance but not red herrings IN romance...wait...that too...oops?) but I do enjoy reading the historical mysteries for their attention to detail and delightful glimpses into other times.

Thank you so much for thinking of me! You are such a dear woman.

If there weren't jobs and other things to do, I would do nothing but read and mysteries are always my first choice.

Re: Sister Fidelma
You're probably a really good reading audience person and don't to peeking ahead, huh?

Re: Sister Fidelma
Sometimes I peek.  If the story doesn't "captivate" me by 25% or so of the way through, I peek.  Sometimes, if I've given up on the book, I read the last chapter then work backward until I know enough about the story to quit all together.

I just started The Painter of Battles by Perez-Reverte.  If you've not read him you might check out his Captain Alatriste novels.  They are mystery/adventures  in the 1620s; Alatriste is a soldier.   Perez-Reverte's first was The Flanders Panel and have been hooked ever since.

Re: Sister Fidelma
Have you read Laura Joh Rowland?  Her main character is a samurai and a detective.

Re: Sister Fidelma
Ooh...no! But I have taught an overview of Japanese history. I'll have to look Rowland up, too.

Re: Sister Fidelma
I think you might like her, especially since you'd get the historical aspects.

Well, you didn't steer me wrong with Odd Thomas. I'll have to give this a try too!
(Just finished Brother Odd--the BEST one yet!!!! LOVED it! Koontz just gets better and better with each Odd!)
