Cyclone goes to a charter school. I like that very much,  for the record.  Yes, there is a constant push for fundraising (because they only get 75% of their funding from State funds and must raise the rest), but the class sizes are smaller, the facility is extremely clean, and the teachers work to make good relationships with the families.  Which is why so many families send all of their children through this particular school.

Today was Open House for our district.  Or, you could call it, Meet the Teacher and Bring All the Items on the Supply Lists.  I just realized I forgot, though, to label Cyclone's box o'stuff. Ah well. His homeroom teacher saw us bring it in and put it down, so it should be credited to us.

There are tables in the cafetorium, at this school. Tables where you buy a school "agenda" -- read, planning guide/calendar/teacher-parent communication tool -- and rent a locker for the year.  Then, there's the bus route table, the uniform table, the after-school care table (for the younger kids), and the PTSO table.   This year, I have volunteered to assist with Fundraising Coordination for the PTSO.  Why? I have no idea. But I have.

Cyclone's class list has about 18 students on it at this point. I like that. There are about 2 eighth grade classes, 2 seventh, and 3 sixth grade classes.  I think. <smile>  I'll do a better count, later. (Hey, I'm on the PTSO Board, ha ha ha!)  His classes will include journalism and art, which I think is very cool.  His homeroom teacher was pleased to see him.  This surprised me, as Cyclone had a real problem hanging on to his textbooks last year. ;)  Do you think the new glasses will help in that regard this year?

Me, either.

Even so, we are looking forward to his final year of Middle School.  :)  I better go get to work hemstitching his uniform slacks...

And guess what? I have Cartoon Ranger's Open House in 2 hours.  Busy day!

As you know, I am a big fan of education.  I believe that charter schools are a good alternative to public schools.  Are the public schools around there pretty bad.  The only places we have charter schools here in Missouri are where the public schools are pretty poor, like in the inner city.

Just wondering.  Doug Grandfield

Many charter schools have failed miserably in my experience. However, the one my son goes to is one of a group run by a business who has high standards and gives little wiggle-room for poor teacher/administrative performance.  The schools in the area are good, actually. I chose a charter school to help my son have a better middle-school experience.  Middle school, for me, is one of the most horrible times in the life of a young person. I wanted him to have to deal with some of it, but not be overwhelmed. I think it's been good for him.

Well, thank you, ma'am.  I just keep trying.

I would have enjoyed going to a school like his, to be honest. lol  What blows me away is that he'll be in HIGH school this time next year.

And, I have given serious consideration to seeing if he wants to be homeschooled again. lol  Makes the mind boggle.

If you would have liked it, that is a good sign! High school is a big step. I actually chose to be homeschooled; my mother woke me sometimes, in the mornings, and I'd be crying the moment my eyes opened. It wasn't fun, for me--and I went to a magnet school where there were no locks on the lockers because we were on an honour system! I took Latin! Still, my older sister reveled in the crowds at her high school. It depends a lot on temperament, ability, and inclination.

If you think he might like to take some college classes, perhaps you ought to talk to my mother! She is brilliant about those sorts of things. I'm sure she'd love to help if you ever wanted to pick her brain!

This is a great article! Thank you for bringing it to my attention.   A very excellent point was made that most folks think of IQ in terms of verbalization of ideas etc.  But intelligence is much more layered than that.

This is great. Thanks again!

Yes I thought it brought up some very valid points.  And you told me you don't read Newsweek, so I thought I'd share.  you're welcome.

Oh, those uniforms....sigh..the smell, the texture, the crispness of the new material...and the new socks and shoes....all bring back memories.

I pretended I hated the uniform, but in all actuality, it was a nice mask and like a protective covering, to hide the things I was ashamed to be different about....and also giving me free reign to be unique in other ways....the ways i chose...lol!

Uniforms serve a variety of functions, to be sure.    I would have liked them when I was a kid.
