There are a few things that I think the government should legalize, in no particular order.  The first thing I'd like to discuss is the legalization of gay marriage.  What's the problem here, folks?  Is it hurting you?  They have just as much of a right to marriage as the rest of us, and I'm so sick of hearing the "sanctity of marriage" argument.  Heterosexuals ruined that a long time ago!  Don't put that on them!  Here's the breakdown, gay men and women deserve not only the same legal rights as their straight counterparts, but the same quixotic rights, as well.  This one really seems like a no-brainer to me!

Next, I'm going to step out on this ledge here, and say that I believe marijuana should be legal.  Have you ever heard the term “angry drunk”?  Yes.  You probably even have one in your family, but I digress.  Have you ever heard the term “angry pothead”?  No, because there aren’t any.  They’re too chill, laid back, chillaxed even.  Additionally, there are way more alcohol related car accidents than weed related.  First of all, the stoner has to actually get up and find his keys, when he’s too lazy to even get off the couch and get a drink.  In summation, potheads are great!  Everyone should befriend one.  Potheads love everyone, except for those who hate on pot.  In all seriousness, marijuana can be used medicinally for a plethora of conditions, too many to name here, but I know it helps cancer patients gain weight.  I wonder why that is.  ;)

Last, I think prostitution should be legalized everywhere.  It works, and has worked, in Nevada for the last couple of hundred years now.  It keeps crimes and disease down.  The girls are tested rigorously to make sure they’re “clean”.  The madam with her fresh, decent rooms replaces the pimp and his fleabag motels.  The girls have real security, and make real money for performing a real service.  Let’s face it, prostitution is the oldest profession in all of the land!

Tell me how you feel, but keep the chastising to a minimum please.  I bruise easily.  :D

Until Next Time,

Danielle

Re: Things that should be Legal
I have to disagree with the legalization of prostitution.  Legalized prostitution in no way benefits women.  Prostitutes or non prostitutes.  Prostitution only perpetuates the victimization, objectification, and violence against women.  The idea that legalized prostitution in Nevada is somehow "clean" and victim free is a fallacy.  The idea that men can legally walk a line of women surveying which one they would like to purchase for an hour and do whatever act they would like hurts all humanity.  It defiles all women, not just the prostitute.  It defiles men as well.  It should never be legal to buy another human being in any fashion for any reason.

Other than that, great blog!

I've lived in NV.  Do you have the same opinion of strippers?  No one is holding a gun to their heads to do this.  Everyone is a CONSENTING adult!  It's not going to stop.  It hasn't in the thousands of years we know of its existance.  Why not regulate it?  Glad you liked the rest of it, though.

Danielle:

I'll agree with you on all three, there are no LOGICAL reasons any of the three should not be legalized... other than narrow-minded, holier-than-thou, bigotted thinking.

Anyone with more than 5 brain cells can tell you the "War on Drugs" has been a complete and utter failure of time and money. Legalizing, regulating and taxing drugs would eliminate crime, drug cartels and dealers, along with a probable improvement in the quality of drugs available... they would have to meet "government standards".

Legalizing prostitution - it's a win-win situation - starting with a decrease in AIDS. Infected men & women would be eliminated from the "work force" and receive the treatment they needed.

As for gay marriage... let's call it what it is... government sponsored discrimination! Again, there is no logical reason to ban it.

Re: Things that should be Legal
Where is evidence to support that legalizing prostitution would cut down on Aids?  Who is going to regulate this business?   Who is going to pay for the regulation enforcement, medical testing, medical treatment and follow up?  Considering that a blow job can go for as little as $20.00 (at least according to Cops in Detroit) I find it unlikely enough revenue could/would be generated to pay for your "win-win" situation.

And I mean all my comments with the utmost respect!  I love a good debate!

Again, I refer you to Nevada in order to learn why and how well this works so efficiently!  I don't think you're quite understanding the points we've been trying to make.  Men are men, and the women know exactly what they are in for, AND they're being given better medical care than I am!

Re: Things that should be Legal
Again, prostitution as evidenced at the Bunny Ranch in no way depicts prostitution in this country.  Perhaps you should visit Rundberg and I35 in Austin, TX.  I believe you would get a more accurate representation of the "working conditions" of 99.9% of the prostitutes in this country.  I believe you have a romanticized version of prostitution.  Since many prostitutes are underage girls, do they know "exactly what they are getting into"?  Since most prostitutes are drug addicted do they "know exactly what they are getting into"?  Statistics show that violence against women goes hand in hand with strip bars, peep shows, and that element of society.  Statisically speaking men who participate in these types of behaviors have a higher incidence of violence against women.  How do we regulate that?  How do we regulate the perpetuation of women being viewed as merely sex objects?  Not to mention the power differential.  Ugh, don't get me started.  It's too early in the morning!

Re: Things that should be Legal
Visit procon dot org - you'll find that all of Europe has legalized or partially legalized prostitution as has Canada & Mexico.

According to current evidence, roughly half of the street prostitutes in Washington, D.C., and New York City are HIV-positive. In Newark, New Jersey, the estimate is that close to 60% of all prostitutes carry the AIDS virus. Yet, in the relatively "free market" of Nevada, where prostitution is legal, not one (as of 1989) of the state-licensed prostitutes has ever tested positive for AIDS. Condom use is mandatory for all oral sex and sexual intercourse and the women are tested weekly for STD's and monthly for HIV.

I haven't been able to find any info relating to regulation or medical costs, it's probably up to the regulating authority to determine.

Re: Things that should be Legal
What makes you think that drug addicted street prostitutes would be worrying about std testing?  I find it interesting that you claim the war on drugs to be a joke but think that regulatating prostitution in this country wouldn't have the same results.  Why in the world would pimps on the street willingly give up their financial control over women?

Re: Things that should be Legal
By legalizing and regulating the business, the crack whores and their pimps wold be eliminated... why take a chance with some street skank when you could enjoy a woman (or man) you knew was disease free. Yeah the illegal trade might still continue but it wouldn't be as prosperous as it is now.

And $20 for a BJ? WOW! Most of the "escorts" here are getting $200 - 300+ an hour for outcalls.

heck yeah!

marry who you want!

smoke some weed!

and... pay for some whores?

in all seriousness though, good post.

The semi-ban on gay marraige is just idiotic, as is the ban on marijuana.

i'm a bit torn on the ban on prostitution in some places, so i could go either way on that.

I agree. Unfortunately all of the old fogeys that make the laws still believe in appearance. Give it a few generations and we might have some luck.
