Hey there,
Your blog sparked some interest to me, as I can recall that just about every week we sang the hippo song at camp. Chances are good that we were running short on time and were not able to do the hippo song, which was probably misinterpreted as not being allowed to sing it. It's a real shame that they can't ask the staff about these things and get it accurate before they start talking to others.

Unfortunately your camper was wrong, or forgetful. I lead the hippo song several times last summer. It is not a favourite of some of the staff (and some of the campers too of course), but those who do like it seem to like it fanatically. The hippo song is one of my favourites, probably because it's absolutely rediculous
I love the key changes at the end. I once played a full octave of last choruses

Thanks guys. The camper gave me a bit more description of the situation and it sounds as if they did in fact ask why, but were not given an explanation. (The camper's POV admittedly.)
But still it likely was as you, Paul, described. I do think children tend to turn one-time refusals (especially if they don't understand the explanation or are not given one) into "rules" (whether they intend to keep them or not).
I heard this "we don't sing the Hippo Song anymore" rumour from a vol. staff member too a couple of years ago. Maybe it was a similar exaggeration.
I joked to myself that maybe the guitarists couldn't handle the key changes at the end -- but then I thought "No, that wouldn't be Josh's problem!"
Yes, it would be nice if campers (the "customers") would abide by the sign we could put up (at any camp) "If you enjoyed your time here, please tell others. If not, please, tell us." but generally speaking customers don't. So in this case a staff member made some campers unhappy and they (or this one anyway) told others. That's what our campers do.
