Not a whole lot of them here in Mindsay.. unfortunately.

In the past, being a nurse meant sticking around the patients and helping them out in the best way possible. Nurses were known to be doctors’ maids, and until today, nurses struggle to be seen as independent caretakers.

Now, the nurse knows anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, epidemiology, psychology, sociology, ethics.. the nurse is now a scientist with a smile and a helping hand. Along this struggle, it has been necessary to define and assign new roles. Deontological codes have been created and the nurse is now a fully independent caretaker.

And since now we have so many responsibilities, we don’t have time to make beds and give baths. That’s the medical assistants’ responsibility. In the hospital, the nurse is getting farther and farther from the patient. Tasks that require TLC (tender loving care) are being delegated to other professionals, and the nurse’s job is now reduced to technical procedures.

Hospital administrations are becoming extremely bureaucratic and the nurse spends almost half of its shift reading and filling papers, most of them, quite redundant.

The nurse, who has the required academic background to handle people with respect, is filling papers, while the medical assistant who is not a licensed professional is taking care of the patients.. Is this acceptable? Hahah!..

So why is the nurse supposed to be constantly learning and self-updating? What for?!

Re: The new nurse
healthcare seems to be kinda backwards all over the place.  Nurses, in my book are invaluable....  they're such a wealth of information! and they are able to relate to patients better than any other caretaker in my experience on both sides.   that's a shame you're having less and less interaction with patients.  i imagine that's one of the reasons you wanted to be one..to care for people!

maybe it's all about money and efficiency?  you're the only ones that are qualified to do all the technical work that the doctors don't have time for and inappropriate for  a medical assistant to be doing.

i wanted to be a nurse for a while so i have a lot of nursing friends....most of them have pursued advanced education (called LPN here....licensed nurse practictioner)  in order to treat patients themselves... i'm guessing to be able to provide the the complete overall care and not be stuck in a tiny role with administrative junk....which makes zero sense to go through all that training and education to end up doing?!  oye...i have a lot of gripes about healthcare can you tell?  sorry for long response

i hope you're well!!!  i missed talking to you regularly.  i'll have to get back on here more often now that you're back! Smiley

Hi Chri! It's always good to read (a lot) from you!

To know that Portugal is not the only place where healthcare is messed up is both relieving and saddening.

Damn right it is all about money and efficiency. Bankruptcy is everywhere, and when nurses are advised to avoid using gloves just to save money, you know things are nasty.

you're the only ones that are qualified to do all the technical work that the doctors don't have time for and inappropriate for  a medical assistant to be doing

So true. I was discussing today with a friend about that LPN specialization, and the chance of a nurse to treat a patient all by himself and she was like: WHA? Are you crazy? That's the doctors' job!

And I had to laugh.. come on.. if medical assistants are replacing nurses.. the next step is nurses replacing doctors! She was shocked. And so am I.

eww... no gloves?  to save money?  i guess we all have to make do with what we have, but it is very sad.  why are all the other jobs that are less critical to human life,.....soccer players,  bankers, celebrities etc etc etc get so well taken care of.  when we might be in crisis if we don't have enough nurses and doctors.  can i say distorted values?!!

have a good vacation dude   hope it is relaxing and fun!!  catch you when u come back.

Because.. porfessional soccer, banks and celebrities are aimed to the weaknesses of the body and soul.. vice pays off..

Healthy people only pay taxes!

Re: The new nurse

Re: The new nurse
Hahah! LOL.
Now seriously.. I don't think you're much of a scary girl.. and I.. I'm not very good as a spy..
I think he'll have to stay incognito for while.. (but not for long!.. **opens spy-kit..**)

Re: The new nurse
well with your spy kit, I don't doubt you'll find out soon enough!   hehe
.... me not much of a scary girl, but scary can be scary in so many different ways dude.  Smiley  lol

i am telling myself not to get my hopes up.  i might just be fantasizing this great relationship that's not really based on much except some image I have inside my head.  when one's overwhelmed by a new interest, the questions and potential flaws get ignored.  when the blindfold slowly comes off and we return from our cloud 9, we see some things that make us go....hmmmm?.....can this work?
ahhh you've caught me at one of those moments.  there's the distance thing, i've never met him in person face to face, ...hell we could both be acting in some fantasy fairytale,  i do tend to make bad choices in men, and..... he has this very anti-social side to him, which isn't bad cuz i do too, but he won't let me in which worries me.  that side could turn out to be a monster.
sorry, I'm dumping my thoughts on your blog here.
I never asked....did you have a good vacation???
it's really nice having you around again.

Re: The new nurse
Lol.. dump at will! You're safe in here.. no one will suspect of an entry about nursing.. lol.

Yes, I had a good vacation. Who knows, tomorrow I'll be feeling a little more frustrated with my girlfriend and I will just blog my one night crush along with my vacations.. thanks for asking!

Well, you sound really excited about all this.. fantasize at will too! Of course it would be more easy to fantasize about a man in a suit who acts like a very social gentleman.. but today we know that monsters are disguised.

You're a big girl so I don't worry about you. But I do wish you the best of lucks! Gosh.. I think you deserve it.

Re: The new nurse

Re: The new nurse
LOL.. I would say you're a top notch spy.   Smiley
hahaha.  I didn't think it'd be noticeable since he hasn't been on much  lately.    but thanks dude, we'll see what comes of it.  who knows.
and thanks...I feel safe in here hiding in your blog snicker snicker....but then again he might be  a good spy too.

the only thing I don't like is ...at certain times he doesn't want to be bothered by anyone or anything.  so  I don't hear from him for several days but a peep and I hate that I'm included in "everything" he needs to shut out.  the feeling sucks.   big girl?  or am I being a whiney needy girl?

oooh you don't have to blog it, but I want to hear about your one night crush..??  hmmm?  lol  is ur girlfriend on here?

Re: The new nurse
He, a good spy? NO WAY. There's NO space in here for TWO top notch spies!  Smiley

Anyway.. I think you're.. really interested in him. Not that you're a "whiney needy girl", you're more like a curious inpatient girl. But his behavior is not really natural. I mean, either he loathes the internet and blogging in general or he really dislikes social contact..

How have you met him? May I know?

About my crush, I think I'll blog about it. I feel like I need to write something nice for a change..
