If a democrat made that mistake, I would slap my forehead as much as I did when I heard it from Boehner. He should have known better, as the article states. But at least he's not ashamed to stand before a crowd and identify with America's founders (in contrast to Anita Dunn's praise of her hero, Mao), or their sentiments of equality for ALL, in contrast to typical left-leaning politicians who want to mark out certain groups for either special protected class (see "hate crimes, elevated punishments for") or particular disrespect (see "town hall participants, Nazi sympathies of").
Public figures on both sides of the aisle have, and will always, make dunder-headed remarks from time to time (Biden or Bush, call your offices). And some are real zingers. I'm more concerned with where their affections lie than their misappropriation of historical citations.
If someone is portrayed in the right-wing media as a "traitorous pinko scumbag" (I've missed that one: where was it again?), it should only be because the person in question expressed support for people, movements, sentiments, or philosophies that demonstrated their hostility to America's founding principles. And I won't live long enough to dig up all the examples of that from the left. Van Jones and Rev. Wright just start the list.
Before making assertions, provide some evidence. The "ashamed" is a canard. Absolutely vile bullshit.
Here's the difference between Republicans and Democrats in how they argue; the Reps are 90% ad hominem and 10% policy, while Dems are 90% policy and 10% ethos checks.
How can you gauge "affection" eh? Usually, I figure it's to their spouses. You mean Affect, or Affectation, then maybe you can puzzle it out based on prior rhetoric, voting records and campaign contribution lists.
As for America's founding principles... I suppose you know exactly what the Founders wanted eh? You read the Federalist Papers eh? I have. Patriot Act is one thing the Founders would scream bloody murder about. The same thing about Gitmo.
