Top Movies this month: Noted in green
Director: Name in blue

The rest:
  1. Man's Castle (1933) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uEX2f4UhT8
  2. Hypocrites (1915) Lois Weber may be one of the first female directors, but she is not among the best. Snore. Zzzzzzz.....
  3. Sagan (2008)
  4. La belle équipe (1936)
  5. Bacheha-Ye aseman/Children of Heaven (1997) Kind of endearing. It made me cry, even though I didn't want it to.
  6. Hypocrites (1915)
  7. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) Terrible, but at least it brought me to a greater understanding of how things work in Kazakhstan.
  8. Wanted (2008) A tad better than Borat, but that's not saying much. It was a total rip-off of The Matrix.
  9. The Gold Rush (1925)
  10. Tatie Danielle (1990)
  11. 35 rhums (2008) (Theater)
  12. Trucker (2008) (Theater) This film is laughably bad, but guess what? It's obvious that a lot of work was put into it. Michelle Monaghan is fab and child-actor Jimmy Bennett is really great. But actually the IMDB reviews weren't lying about the bad dialog.
  13. Crack-Up (1946) This wasn't as remarkable as some other noirs, but it's worth it for Claire Trevor. She really is outrageous.
  14. Meeting Andrei Tarkovsky (2008) (Theater)
  15. Up (2009) (Theater)
  16. Banjo on My Knee (1936) Kind of a lame Barbara Stanwyck vehicle that gets semi-better as it goes on. Even though she has prefect elocution for a girl that's supposed be backwards and from Tennessee (redunant? sorry.), still the movie increases with its charm.
  17. The Westerner (1940)
  18. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) (Theater)
  19. Tatarak/Sweet Rush (2009) (Theater)
  20. La teta asustada / The Milk of Sorrow (2009) (Theater)
  21. Madeo (2009) (Theater)

French films (TV5Monde):
  1. Les aventuriers des mers du Sud (2006) (cable, partial viewing) It's a testament that this movie is so good that I randomly turned on TV5, and just couldn't turn it off. With performances by Jane Birkin and Geraldine Chaplin, it tells of the final days of Robert Louis Stevenson. It's not a masterpiece, but was quite interesting. Now I just have to catch the first hour sometime!
  2. Le crime est notre affaire (2008) Avec (Starring) Catherine Frot
  3. Dialogue avec mon jardinier /Conversations with My Gardener (2007) Ah, this sad and funny movie was worth it. Daniel Auteuil is one of my favorite actors, and Jean Becker is a totally capable director.
  4. Mon frère se marie/My Brother is Getting Married (2006) I love Aurore Clément. This was supposed to be a comedy, but really, it was just a sad film. I was glad when it was over, but there were some redeeming qualities about it.

Costa-Gavras:
  1. Mad City (1997)
  2. Hanna K. (1983)

Mike Leigh:
  1. The Short & Curlies (1987, short) (TV)
  2. High Hopes (1988)
  3. A Sense of History (1992, short) (TV)
  4. Grown-Ups Audio Commentary
  5. Meantime (1984) (TV) Oh man, this was a real disappointment. Just about as boring as Bleak Moments.
  6. "Play for Today: Who's Who (#9.15)" (1979) Lots of chatty dialogue about the celebs of the day. My favorite part was the Petula Clark bit.
  7. "Arena: Mike Leigh Making Plays" (1982) Both informative and fun.
  8. The Conversation - Will Self Interviews Mike Leigh (at The Scar)
  9. Grief: Bel Mooney interviews Mike Leigh
  10. Naked (1993)
  11. "Second City Firsts: The Permissive Society (#4.4)" (1975)
  12. Secrets & Lies (1996) REWATCH - 2nd viewing
  13. The Five Minute Films (1975) (TV):
    -A Light Snack 6/10
-The Birth of the 2001 FA Cup Final Goalie 7.5/10 funny
    -Old Chums 6.5/10
The friend of a disabled man is keeping him from "pushing off" so he can view a movie.
    -Afternoon 6.25/10
Two more experienced married women laugh at the ideals of a young, newly-wed girl.
    -Probation 6.5/10
A black teenager is most likely accused of a crime he didn't do. There is no proof of what he did one way or another.
    Extra-curricular activities:
    -Ecstasy (play by Mike Leigh)
-Smelling a Rat (play by Mike Leigh)

Alain Resnais:
Image
  1. Je t'aime, je t'aime (1968) (Theater)

Rene Clair:
  1. Entr'acte (1924)
  2. The Ghost Goes West (1935) Nearly gave up on this, but strangely enough it got better.
  3. It Happened Tomorrow (1944) Screenshots to come. This one was fantastic!
  4. Quatorze Juillet (1933) I've been seeing too many French films from the thirties lately, and they're unfortunately starting to blend together. Crazy!
  5. Paris qui dort (1925)
  6. Un chapeau de paille d'Italie (1928)
  7. Le fantôme du Moulin-Rouge (1925)
  8. Le voyage imaginaire (1925)

Guy Maddin:
  1. Brand Upon the Brain! (2006)

Jean Renoir:
  1. Toni (1935) Recommended by: Anne Fontaine, Jos, Nadafingah
  2. La fille de l'eau(1925) IMDB calls this film Whirlpool of Fate, but I call it Water Girl.

Shorts:
  1. Alice Solves the Puzzle (1925)
  2. Le film à venir (1997) Raoul Ruiz The film wasn't as juicy as it could have been, but it was somewhat amusing and the photography was thoughtful.
  3. Mosaic (1965) Norman McLaren Summary: A man sets a ping-pong ball into motion and it becomes fruitful and multiplies.
  4. Loose Ends (1979) http://vimeo.com/2995641
  5. Film (1965)

TV-Related:
  1. "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: A Piece of the Action (#1.1)" (1962)
  2. "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Appointment at Eleven (#5.3)" (1959)
  3. "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: The Waxwork (#4.27)" (1959)
  4. "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Total Loss (#4.17)" (1959)

Re: October Movies
I thought the same of Wanted, albeit for a boy like me it was at least fun to watch, I guess.

Ah! Fantastic Mr. Fox is in the cinema. I had no idea =) I imagine you enjoyed it a million times over!

35 Rhums sounds pretty good. I am adding it to my Netflix queue.

!!!!!! You are adding the TV5Monde films on here. HOw do you like it so far? Is it worth it? By the looks of it, three out of four films does not sound too shabby =) & hurray for Queen Margot's Daniel Auteuil. I am adding Les Aventuriers & Dialogue too. Oh shoot, Netflix is not finding these! This is just another reason why I need to inquire about TV5Monde, which, believe it or not, I am going to do tomorrow because I have to visit Time Warner Cable for both an upgrade & downgrade to my services. I like to call it a trade-off! =)

It Happened Tomorrow sounds zany =)

Is 14 Juillet really patriotic?

Well, Mosaic does not sound too interesting =) Thank you for the Loose Ends link.

Toni sounds promising too, but I did a preliminary search for it on Netflix. Sadly, nothing =( But why does the name Jean Renoir sound familiar? I wonder if he is related to Pierre-Auguste Renoir =) Both of them work in the visual arts!

Re: October Movies
My main problem with Wanted was that Angelina Jolie's character had none of the background that James McAvoy's did. She was just a girl and a gun! I guess the director of this film is remaking Moby Dick comic-book style. I don't think I'll be seeing that. That's just me!!

Fantastic Mr. Fox played at the AFI Fest. I think it was the first screening in the Los Angeles area. Wes Anderson was there, although he didn't talk much about it. I liked it. It was well written. It was mainly appropriate for kids, as well as being semi-entertaining for adults as well. My friend was a tad disappointed with it though. Willem Dafoe did the voice of a rat. Basically, I had no idea that it was him. It was pretty much the scariest character, because everytime the rat came on-screen I was scared to death something very bad would happen! Overall though, yeah, I love Wes Anderson's films even though he hasn't made a film like The Royal Tenenbaums in awhile and that's sad.

35 Rhums was only in theaters for a week here in L.A. But yeah, it way exceeded my expectations!! Great stuff.

TV5Monde is worth it. I thought they played a new film each night. To my disappointment, they have been repeating the movies they show. However, it is working in my advantage because I don't have Tivo and sometimes they show movies before I get off work...then the next week they'll play the film at a decent hour, say 8 o'clock. It is insane that Dialogue hasn't come out in the States yet. It has a big star and a big director and it was great as well. Since I check IMDB I have been aware of this film for awhile, wondering why an Auteuil film is not available yet. But definitely check it out when it's available. Oh yes!! Do call Time Warner. It would be so great if you got the channel too. It's so worth it. It's lovely.

It Happened Tomorrow IS zany. Yeah, basically, it was nothing but fun.  I meant to add a link to the best films for this month: http://cinemabecomesher.blogspot.com/  and this was definitely one of the best films.

14 Juillet is only semi-patriotic. Basically it takes place the day before through the day after of 14 Juillet. Not the best film ever. But it was ok.

LOL about Mosaic. No, it was not interesting. It was one of the lesser shorts I saw. My friend Kristina recommended Loose Ends and it was a great watch.

Yes, Jean Renoir is Pierre-Auguste's son! Jean is famous for framing his films like paintings. Some of his better known films are The Rules of the Game and La Grande Illusion.  Basically, I have a great video store that carries some of the more obscure titles.  This film director (also French) Anne Fontaine said she really liked Toni, so I checked out the recommendation. It was pretty darn good. I don't tend to enjoy Jean Renoir's films that much, even though he is a complete master!  Actually, the more I see of him, the more I like, though.

Re: October Movies
I forgot to mention that you are much braver than me to sit through Borat!

Wanted's director seems to be pretty good at what he does though. He definitely has the unrealistic action thing down, and for that reason, something tells me this comic book Moby Dick might not be too shabby. That being said, I will more than likely not see the film either.

=( Sad. I do not think anything will compare to The Royal Tenenbaums though. He set the bar when he made that film. What a shame. Oh well -- by the way, Willem Dafoe as a rat sounds extraordinarily appropriate. I may watch Fantastic Mr. Fox for the express purpose of exposing my youngest sister to some Wes Anderson =) Then I can gradually work her up to Tenenbaums!

Oh no =( While that repeating schedule may work for you, it does not work for someone as unemployed as me, LOL -- but do you know if they have any good television series? Yes, if Cache was able to make it to the States, then it sounds like Dialogue could make it too.

Thanks for the Cinema Becomes Her link! I wish you were on Tumblr. I would follow you there. Have you seen my Tumblr?

Oh gosh, I feel silly for not knowing this father-son relationship. Ha! Los Angeles, home of the obscure video stores. I like to think of Netflix as my obscure video store, but they do not have Dialogue, Les Aventuriers, & Toni. Grrr

Re: October Movies
Okay, tho, so about Borat. I thought Bruno sounded much better, but all the reviews were bad. So at my work I had a project for all these different countries, and I was having trouble coming up with what I needed for Kazakhstan. That night at the library, Borat stared at me. So that's where my slightly sarcastic comment for Borat came from. Basically, I thought it was fate. But the movie was absolutely terrible. Not my type of film at all. And I had no intention of ever seeing it. But I figured it was then or never.

Ooh, gradually working up your sister for the Tenenbaums. Absolutely genius strategy!! Also, I have a feeling it will make lots of money. It is way less dark than Where the Wild Things Are (haven't seen it, but I've heard). Plus are there any other good children's movies out right now or around the corner? eh...probably not.

See, while they repeat the films, they still have a steady stream of new films. I'm more interested in some films than others, but yeah. They have movies, TV films, news, music, etc. Basically, everything. The news was annoying me this morning, because there are no subtitles. Sometimes I'll listen to try to figure out what's going on. It's funny when I hear things on French news first, because then I'll be absolutely shocked when they show footage of people running from explosions or something. Check out their schedule HERE (click). Basically they have a grid for the different types of shows they have and a complete weekly schedule.

I added Tumblr to my phone after reading your entry. But I haven't signed up for it yet. I am going to do that right now!!

Okay, did I tell you about the time I went to the J. Paul Getty Museum (it's always free, and they have free parking on Saturday evenings). Anyway, I got dressed up in effort to meet cute guys there. And the guy working the bookstore offered some help. He told me to go to a certain building where the "best" paintings were. So I DID. And they had some of Pierre-Auguste Renoir's paintings!! I'm like, yeah it really is the best. And the guy was helpful, cute, sweet and British. And my only regret was that I didn't ask him for his #. I even went back the next week to try to find him again (ok, that's borderline stalkerish, right?) but some lady was working in his place. I was sad. Let's see....maybe next time.

Hopefully Dialogue will be released eventually. Les Aventuriers was actually made for TV, so I'm not sure if it will ever get a "release". Hopefully, though.

Re: October Movies
LOL I love this story about how you basically fell into watching Borat. I never wanted to see Bruno -- those movies just sounded terrible to me!

Yes, hopefully Wes Anderson continues to make more kid-friendly films =) Otherwise, I am stuck with Disney. Yikes! I have been a little hesitant about taking her to see Where The Wild Things Are. She told me that she has read the book, but frankly, I am scared to see what Hollywood has done to yet another children's book. Hello! Polar Express..?!

Hurray Tumblr!

No way! You totally should have got his number. Heck, you should have got it that very evening. It is not borderline stalkerish, if you ask me. I think it is a perfectly legit way to re-meet someone.

Re: October Movies
Yeah, Wes Anderson might make another cute film but I just want him to make another to die for film! it doesn't matter!!

Yeah it may actually be a little stalkerish, and what if I go through all that trouble and he's not interested. BTW he may be back in England for all I know. British accent, who knows!?
Andreux on
Re: October Movies
Trust me, I want a film of Tenenbaum-esque caliber too!

Those Brits cannot stay too long away from home
rancettela on
Re: October Movies
Of course, Tenenbaums was Anderson's last collaboration with Owen Wilson. I wish they'd make another film together! Owen did one of the voices for Fantastic Mr. Fox, but it was for a character that only appeared briefly. I was SAD!

I hope that British guy takes me with him, when he goes home!!! yay.
Andreux on
Re: October Movies
As much as I dislike Owen, I cannot deny that they actually did produce some great things =) I am sorry to hear about the cameo! That is a bummer for you =(

lol yay!

Re: October Movies
LOL it's kinda funny that you dislike him. I had a crush on him for forever, starting in the year 2000. I don't know if I even love him that much anymore, although I still do I guess. It's just kinda weird how feelings/people change. Wait, I'm talking about a movie star here.....okay......

Re: October Movies

Re: October Movies
Ah, I wish I had seen The Baader Meinhof Complex. It was released out here (I know, I'm spoiled!). I almost saw it, but I can be choosy sometimes about seeing films in the theater.

Re: October Movies
I understand about being picky =) I mean, the cinema can be pretty expensive these days!

I do not think there really is a way to comment. You either click the heart button to "like" the post, or you re-blog it on your own blog & add your comment on there. & oui oui, comme l'orange =)
