First my thoughts, note this is before the research, this is the part that is actually going through my head right now.
To me, a motel is the dive on the side of the road, the place that people go to to be anonymous, where they go when they don't have money, or where we go when we just don't give a damn. The motel is that creepy ass place you see in the corner of the highway when you are driving in the middle of nowhere. Then the hotel is that nice place where families stay when they are vacation, swimming pool round back, laundry mat on the first floor, maybe a personal gym, continental breakfast in the morning. My family travels a lot, and I like to think that we, for the most part, stay in hotels, but then again since I have no real defintion between a hotel and a motel I am going to have to say that the purpose of this rant is to find out if I frequently visit hotels or motels, and not in the dirty sleazy kind of way...I have no need for a motel, I have a room that works just fine for any extra activities I may want to partake in.
And with a little research light shines upon us, meaning I just looked up some quick definitions. If needed I will continue from this....
Motel: (this is what the first site had to say....personally I think it wasn't very helpful but here goes): Motels are roadside lodgings that are often quaint and privately owned, though motel chains also exist. One of the distinguishing features of a motel is that it is U-shaped or square, with an inner courtyard that serves as the parking lot.
After that I must say I am a big motel visitor...interesting indeed. Now for the other side.
Hotels are located in, or near, cities. The basic design of a motel differs significantly from hotels, where rooms face inward with doors opening to interior hallways.
Okay well now I am back to being stuck in between, I mean I've stayed at some crazy hotel/motels that kind of meet both criteria....what would a place that has an open courtyard but is located in the city be and it also serves breakfast and has a jacuzzi.
Or how about the place that has rooms opening to an interior hallway that is privately owned, and quaint and doesn't have breakfast or really anything but a bed and a bathroom.

I guess on with research:
Wow didn't think I would find a reasonable answer on only my second try, but I like this one, it makes sense so I am going to go with it.
And I quote:
"There really is none. The term “motel” is derived from the term "motor hotel," which originally meant that the hotel provided parking (circa 1950s). The term motel today generally is used for a "limited service" property (i.e., a hotel that provides a limited number of amenities and does not provide food service. "

So from that bit of information, I am going to have to say that I've stayed in quite a few more motels than hotels, and it kind of makes me feel dirty, but it's in one of those I am being silly a superficial kind of ways, so I am over it already and now I am moving on with my life. Hopefully my stress for tomorrow will be better.
