I just want to reiterate why I dislike pornography :P there is something about it that is very ugly. You take, for example, a film like La Belle Noiseuse, it is the complete opposite of pornography. There is something inherently beautiful about the movie. Yes, there is a certain degree of eroticity (is that a word?) in the fact that the incredibly beautiful Emmanuelle Beart spends most of the film naked (she is posing for an artist). But it is more like a celebration of the beauty of the female body, not unlike some of the works of the great artists. And it's a damn good movie as well. It was actually sort of nice that the movie didn't contain any sex, and the characters generally behaved respectfully to each other. Unrealistic? It doesn't have to be. Compare this with pornography, which is sick, treats women like objects, presents a disturbing view of humanity and is, in my occasionally humble opinion, quite un-appealing. I don't know about other guys, but I don't find a girl sucking a guy off even remotely exciting. In fact I'm going to side with the christian conservatives here, I think porn is something that has the potential of destroying much of the joy of sex. It reduces it from an act of love to a meaningless act that makes you feel good... not unlike drug-taking. Anyway I've ranted enough now, I'd be interested to hear other's views on this :)

Re: The contrast between pornography and beauty
Eroticism, but sensuality might be a better word.

La Belle Noiseuse vs. Pornography?  Um... could be and over extended attempt at comparison. Could work if you would address the French sensibilities. To the French, sexualiy is just another aspect of life and sensuality is a way of life. There is the spiritual, the physical and the intellectual which comprise a healthy individual. Think of the greatest mind in history (in your opinion), can you imagine them having sex? Why or why not will determine your own balance of the three.

As for treating women like objects, prostitution is not called "the worlds oldest profession" for no reason. There will always be women willing to engage themselves as sexual objects, there always have been.

But there hasn't always been video and dvd to record  and disseminate the acts.

I think it was a good comparison because I found the movie to be one of those few that managed to be sensual (admittedly a better word) without being exploitative. Believe it or not, I have thought about it before (famous people having sex) I think that means I think waaaay too much I don't have much opinion on prostitution but I don't really like the concept much, and what goes on... I feel sorry for women in that position, it must be a shit life....

Re: The contrast between pornography and beauty
I think it's because so many people are selfish and thoughtless, including me a lot of the time. Its just that I think people deserve to be treated with respect, and watching pornography is really showing no respect to yourself or the people you're watching, and just thinking in a logical progression, I believe it must lead to one showing less respect to the girls that they will have relationships with in the future.... anyway thanks  but there's other guys who think the same, I'm sure, even if they don't say it.

Hey.  I like what you're saying.  Good blog.  I agree with you.  Porn sort of makes things cheap.  Most of it is just kind of dirty and all about skanky girls gettign it on with skeezy guys.  Not cool.

I heard from some of my agnostic friends that Christians aren't supposed to enjoy sex; better not side with them . . .

Re: The contrast between pornography and beauty
nah that's not true... well maybe in some of the extreme fundamentalist churches but I think you'd find most christians enjoy sex as much as anybody. Although maybe only in the missionary position moving on.... but yeah the Bible actually has stuff in it about how sex is supposed to be good (mainly the whole book of song of solomon is devoted to that lol) also there are still some people who believe sex is to be used only for the creation of kiddies, but once again it would be a small minority...

rofl I'm just teasting; I'm often counted among the conservatives when it comes to Christianity; it's just odd how Christians get stereotyped, sometimes, and it was nice to hear someone agree with us for once.

And yeah, the song of Solomon is odd . . . one of the biggest questions in my literature class on the Bible was "How did erotica get to be put in the middle of the Bible--and a whole book of it, too!"
