Those who know me or have read this blog before will probably be aware that I watch a lot of foreign films. Not having learnt any foreign languages, I watch these movies with subtitles (actually, as a side note, I watch many English-language films with subtitles as well, in case I miss dialogue). Anyhow, it is only recently that I realised how important subtitling can be.

Naturally, when someone makes subtitles for a foreign language film, it is based on their interpretation of the dialogue. You wouldn't think that there would be much difference, but there can be. For example, I bought the Hopscotch edition of The Seventh Seal after only having seen the American Criterion Collection version. The subtitles were quite different, and this actually affected my viewing of the film. Whole sentences had been drastically changed in parts, and while the same essential meaning was conveyed, a lot of the wit and power was lost.

Another example is the Umbrella release of Fitzcarraldo. In this case, the subtitling was so incredibly lazy that seemingly crucial dialogue was left untranslated. I actually ended up switching to the English dubbed version it was so bad.

So, I have learnt that subtitling can be very important when deciding to buy a foreign language movie. Unfortunately, in many cases when I buy DVDs over the internet, the only version of that film I have seen is an old VHS or a local DVD release, so I have no idea of whether the subtitles will be different, and whether this will have a negative effect or not.

Re: Subtitles
This is rather strange. I've sort of just stumbled upon your blog. And I find that we have very similar tastes and personality traits. It's always interesting to find that in the opposite sex. Just a thought!

Re: Subtitles
Hey

Yeah, it is always cool to meet someone who shares interests.... so you're a film fan, I'm guessing? Excellent Do you have any favourite films in particular?

I noticed in your profile, it says you go to Monash Uni... I actually know a guy from there... although odds are you wouldn't know him. Lol.

But anyhow, I just came back from Melbourne three days ago... love the place. So much better than Canberra...

Re: Subtitles
Hmmm favourite foreign films... let me think. Without a doubt, I love Amelie, A very long engagement and Priceless (I'm an Audrey Tatou AND a Gaspard Ulliel (guy from Hannibal rising) fan). I love everything french, so I love watching random French films here and there. I've seen a good variety of Catherine Breillat's movies- they're very sexually graphic and controversial. Have u seen any of her works? crazy stuff

Some of the German thrillers are also not bad... they're the ones with that chick in it from "Run Lola Run". I think she was in this one called Anatomie. The germans are pretty cool with those slasher thrillers.

And yeah, we have a few monash uni campuses over here, i'm in the clayton one... which one is your friend in?

oh and i agree, Canberra is slightly more boring. hehehe just slightly.

Re: Subtitles
I love Amelie as well  Unfortunately for Gaspard, the only film I've seen him in was Hannibal Rising, which I hated, which sort of taints my opinion of him. Although, I'm sure he's a decent actor... as for Breillat, I've seen Romance, A Ma Souer, and 36 Fillette. All good movies, but yes she is a little crazy

German films can be great.... at the moment, I'm really getting into the works of 70s German directors (Wenders, Herzog, Fassbinder...), some really fantastic movies there.

That's pretty awesome that you're at the Clayton campus... my Grandma used to live a few houses down from there. I don't know which campus my friend (Omar) is at though.... somewhere in Melbourne I guess hehe.

One movie you should really check out is The Science of Sleep. I saw it while I was in Melbourne, it's a really great film!

Anyhow, how's life going for you at the moment? Uni treating you well?

Re: Subtitles
Haha its funny you suggest The Science of Sleep, because I have seen it! And I saw it on the day it came out at the Nova cinema in Carlton (famous for its international/arthouse films). I think it was about 2 weeks ago when it came out. Gosh, that was a crazy movie. Absolutely hilarious though. Some of those scenes totally had me rolling in my chair. "You have big hands" "It means I have a big penis". hahahaha. But the end had me tripping. And I suppose that was the intention of the film. After a while, neither I nor my friend really knew when Stephane was dreaming or not. And I found that really sad.

Yeah I saw Hannibal Rising in Paris actually. I was in Europe a couple of months ago for 6 weeks. So that made it even better for me. I went there with a couple of french boys and I'm totally going "omg he's so hot" and they're both like "omg he's eating people". I love Gaspard. Too bad I can't get most of his movies here. Too bad I can't get most international films here. *sigh*

Oh awesome, I've seen Romance and A Ma Souer too. In fact, I only rented the A Ma Souer last week. From your blogs, I guess you're still a virgin hey. You should watch Brief Crossing. Its about a boy who loses his virginity to an older woman. Tough stuff. A Ma Souer was very interesting. Very interesting indeed. As for Romance, I rented that with my best friend, and her mum decided to join us for the movie. Very uncomfortable. haha

So what do you study at uni? I've got exams coming up in a couple of weeks. Omg this sounds like an email. Chat soon

Re: Subtitles
Hehe. Watching Romance with your best friend's mum... awkward much?

Did you get the ending? I couldn't quite figure out whether it was supposed to be a dream or not. Didn't make a whole lot of sense.

But, yes, I am a virgin (sigh). I remember watching The 40 Year Old Virgin, and there's just this thought in the back of my head... hmmm, I wonder if that's going to be me?

I want to see The Science of Sleep again! Just got to find someone who'll go with me...

As for uni, I'm just doing bachelor of arts. Film studies, political science, philosophy and linguistics. Luckily I've still got a little bit of time until my exams...

Hey if you want I'll give you my email address - david_lpfan@hotmail.com. That's an L by the way, not a 1.... a lot of people get confused about that, hehe.

I am very, very jealous that you went to Europe. Wish I could go to France

Re: Subtitles
ok i've added you onto my msn. but i don't know if u go on at all. either way, you're there haha.

hey if you'll make the trek to melbourne again, i'll come watch it with you. That's if its still on the cinemas. Its one of those movies that I want to watch again, just because,  I didn't quite get it first time around. urgh

I've always wanted to do film studies, but I ran out of room. I also want to do french, but i also ran out of room in my degree. I thought that criminology would be more useful, but it really isn't. hmmm. So i've got criminology and japanese under my belt and a couple of units of italian. I'm going back to europe again, but I'll tell you all about that later.

gotta go study principles of equity

Re: Subtitles
Cheers

lol I probably won't make it down to Melbourne again until at least Christmas time... although, if Collingwood makes the finals, who knows but thanks for the offer, maybe we can catch a film next time I come down, would be awesome (always better than watching a movie alone).

Hmm wouldn't mind learning French myself... probably more a spare time thing though... dunno if I'd want to study it.

Damn schoolwork....

Re: Subtitles
Not until christmas time?! But like, there's nothing to do in canberra. Or, is there? haha Sounds like you've got a chick to distract yourself anyway.

Oh so you're into the footy hey. I never saw the appeal of it. Then I realised its the best place to perve on guys. So in the holidays, my friends are gonna take me to a match. So that I can perve on the guys that are watching footy. Apparently Collingwood has the best looking supporters. Either way, it'll be interesting.

Yeah, I've kinda been self-teaching myself french. When I went over there, I stayed with a host family for a few weeks and it was very very interesting. Every meal, I'd just eat while I listened to the family crapping on in french. The guy I was living with, I hated him, but everytime he opened his mouth, I was like "whoaa.... hot accent.... take me..."

hahahahahaha. So I'm going again next year. First, I'll go study in Italy for about 2 months, and then I'll spend the rest of my winter break in paris. *sigh*... I don't know why I'm in Australia. I belong in France. hehehehe

Anywany, here's my email addy if you want to do something with it: genytenshii@hotmail.com

catch ya!

Re: Subtitles
lol, that's funny... Collingwood's always had the stereotype of having alcoholic, toothless supporters, but there's probably not a whole lot of truth to that hehe.

Hmm I wish I did have a chick to distract myself with, but unfortunately I'm still sailing the ocean of singleness... or something nicely metaphorical like that

But yeah French is sexy. Whether its a French girl speaking English with a French accent, or just speaking French, its sexy. In which case, I wonder if a French chick speaking Zulu would be sexy? Hmmm....

Thanks for the email address   I'll actually have to chat to you on msn some time... when I'm on. Lol.

PS take me with you to France  sigh I wish. Canberra's already boring me, and I've only been back for a week, hehe.
