The author sounds very confused. She doesn't understand the nature of serving one's country in the capacity that politicians do. Their job isn't to tell you how great things are right now, that would be very suspect. People like the Obamas, and the Clintons, and the McCains, and even the Bushs have a moral obligation to critique society. They are only blowing smoke if they are telling you that everything is perfect.
And since when is changing what is wrong bad? And what is wrong with being hungry for that change? And being proud of seeing it? What is it that you are fighting for? I would love to hear that from you. I think you should make a blog post of it and set the record straight.
But the odds are way against a coup de tat being good for us, historically. Even if there was some force from within the United States that was able to overthrow the government, chaos would ensue, and I guarantee that what came out of it wouldn't be anything like what you'd want. It would be unlikely to see unanimous agreement about how to proceed after such an event. You'd see all of those signs of fascism... because whoever or whatever comes out of the ashes of the old government would have to have support from everyone, or risk another rebellion, and that means quieting dissent, taking away freedom of the press or controlling the press, keeping a standing, military police force, suspend elections....etc. We'd end up living under an American Hitler.
It isn't about lecturing. Critiquing isn't lecturing. Critiquing is offering reasoned analysis, and everyone, including social scientists (which is the field that Mrs. Obama started out in and what started these sorts of attacks against her...) and politicians of all sorts are MORALLY obligated to offer reasoned analysis of society, not to blow smoke up our asses like a Reagan, or a Bush who constantly tells us that everything is just swell (until it is obviously not).
I don't have any problem understanding the words that are coming out of the mouths of the politicians, not do I have trouble looking at their backgrounds myself. I don't look to campaign promises, myself. I try to judge a person's character, what they focus on, what they care about... I can do that with Obama. I can do that with McCain. McCain is too hot-headed and focused overseas to be president. He sees nothing wrong with being in Iraq forever. He is, as they say, Bush lite. I can do it with Clinton, but not so much, since she grew her career off of the success of her husband and claims to have been an important part of things that she wasn't.
