I read an excellent article a few day ago about artists, the recording industry and the new schemata now dictating distribution and revenues. Artist are finding, because of the internet, that they no longer have to be bound by exclusive recording contracts. As all major labels see their revenues plummet, they are scampering to protect and insulate themselves from change. Under the old system artists earned single-digit-percentages from their creations with the labels retaining exclusive copyright ownership. Apparently this artist Beck is a model of how to pave the inroads to the new directions all business in the recording industry will be conducted, and how music will be disseminated, The entire DRM action is a futile form of protectionism and a rabbit-hole reaction in resistance to change. I know someone (it could be me) who owns hundreds of software programs and thousands of songs and albums. This person collected them all free, online.
The hyperactive crack geeks always find a way past digital protections. There was a period several months ago when Microsoft was changing their XP "validation" system every couple days. And every couple days the crack geeks would find another work around. This went on for a month and finally MS gave up.
So, I think DRM, and any form of digital protection is the dinosaurs last gasp.
