DENVER (AP) - Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voter's sympathies but never diverted his campaign, The Associated Press has learned.
The two-time White House candidate notified a close circle of senior advisers that he planned to make the announcement at a 1 p.m. EST event in New Orleans that had been billed as a speech on poverty, according to two of his advisers.
The decision came after Edwards lost the four states to hold nominating contests so far to rivals who stole the spotlight from the beginning - Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.
announcements of announcements are always interesting... why not just.... announce it once?
Where's the drama in that?
I have, for a long time now, felt that our presidential process needs to be turned into a reality TV game show... I can just hear it now...
"And I have an announcement to make........ ... . .. .. .. and we'll find out what that is after the break!'
Anyway, with gulianni and edwards bowing out, how long till Paul lets down his loyal fans and Obama skyrockets in popularity?
I would like to see the whole business start in September of the election year - no campaigning before that - everyone hs 2 months to make her/his case, then it is over.
Did Giulanni announce? Good!
Inevitable but disappointing just the same.
Jesse, he only made one announcement, after telling his staff - did you think he should have just taken them by surprise at the news conference? Would you expect the present day media to not report that notification when they found out about it? This was hardly expected today, before super Tuesday.
Now I only hope he has the balls to NOT endorse anyone no matter his personal ego and hoping it might get him a VP slot.
Of course, the anyone would have to be Obama, I can't see Hilary ever considering Edwards on her ticket.
I'd rather not see Edwards throw his support, and possibly a majority of his supportes to one or the other candidate; if they are going to win, I want them to win because the voter actually thought about it and didn't just follow the herd.
I am sorry that he is out of the running.
Isn't it inevitable that he will endorse someone?
usually it would be - but in this 5% margin race between Hilary and Barack, Edwards 20% of the pie is awfully important. I can't see him endorsing anyone but Obama, but I wish he wouldn't. (of course I'm still waiting for Colin Powell to ride in on his white horse and declare as an independent, LOL!)
I read speculation that he would back Hilary.
Colin Powel has a white horse?!?
btw, nice to see some spicy pork still around mindsay!
It's an important component!
Too Bad he seems from up here in Canada a decent man. We actually have such a different process up here he might actually win. 1st choices seldom do win, and conventions still matter. also our leadership campaigns are only a couple of months long and elections are held within a month of being called.
Well, frack.
The only Democrat I could have voted for is gone.
I have a feeling I'm going to end up writing in Ron Paul in the big game, since he's not going to win the Republicunt primary.
Write in yourself and I will, too.
If you mean write myself in, I'm not old enough to meet the age requirement.
I forgot about that requirement.
Hence the Ron Paul write in.
So if you were old enough you'd write yourself in? Heck, fastforward to 2024!
I've got a friend who wants me to be his running mate in a couple decades.
