Sept. 19, 2008 - The New Agenda, a non-partisan women's advocacy organization, recognizes the decades of worthy work and achievement by the National Organization for Women. But The New Agenda is concerned that NOW's recent endorsement of Barack Obama leaves many women in this country out in the cold.

This precedent-setting move marks the first time in NOW's 42-year history that it has endorsed an all-male ticket.

Since its founding in 1966, NOW has endorsed only five presidential candidates:

1972     Shirley Chisholm for President
1984     WalterMondale/Geraldine Ferraro for President/Vice President
2003     Carol Moseley Braun for President
2008     Hillary Rodham Clinton for President
2008     Barack Obama/Joseph Biden for President/Vice President

The New Agenda co-founder Amy Siskind says, "We find it quite perplexing that NOW has chosen this moment to endorse an all-male ticket." The endorsement seems all the more puzzling given the fact that the Republican Party is running its first female candidate for Vice-President, Gov. Sarah Palin, and the Green Party is fielding its first all-woman presidential ticket with Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente.

"Women need to stand together and help one another," says Siskind. "Women's issues such as unfair pay, domestic violence, and unpaid leave impact women of all political parties."

The New Agenda is a not-for-profit organization and will not be endorsing a candidate in the presidential election.

The group is in talks with representatives from both Senator Obama's and Senator McCain's campaigns about the platform of women's issues it wants to see addressed.

The New Agenda has also requested a meeting with Gov. Sarah Palin to discuss the group's platform.

Jennifer Borg, another co-founder of The New Agenda, says, "We want to give Sarah Palin a chance to tell us what Sarah Palin believes on women's issues."

Re: Women’s Group Condemns NOW Endorsement of Obama
Sounds like these women are rather sexist, and need to get over themselves NOW.

They're right for condemning NOW's endorsement. Obama is extremely misogynistic and the pro-Obama sexism from the media was prevalent throughout the entire nomination process.

They need to pop a Midol and stop bitchin'. Show me the "extreme misogyny" and "pro-Obama sexism".

Have you seen Obama's record and quoted statements regarding womens' issues? He's perfectly fine allowing state-enforced breeding laws, doesn't care about mental conditions of the women suffering from such oppressive laws.

"Now, I don't think that 'mental distress' qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term."
-Obama

What kind of progressive or socialist talks like that? Maybe a Nationalist Socialist, but those types are, in reality, state-capitalists.

What about his running mate, Joe Biden, and his violence against women act?
What about the fact that at the DNC there was a women who spoke of her unfair salary because she was a woman and then she went on to give her support to Obama and Biden.
What about when Obama was giving his acceptance speech and spoke of the unfair treatment of women in our society and stated that he wants "my daughters to have the same opportunities as your sons."

Or is that all just a bunch of political bullshenanagins?

This isn't about Joe. Biden IS a pretty progressive guy and is definately a good ticket for feminism. And okay, it appears he's going to legislate some anti-male preferential treatment laws. That's good, as well. However, whether or not they'll come to fruitation is not a given. The sexist, Pro-Obama media is who the potential President is working for, not us.

Re: Women’s Group Condemns NOW Endorsement of Obama
I think Obama can control the media as much as he can control the weather...I guess I just don't understand how he is working for the media... Please, elaborate.

And I'd have to say from my perspective, this is just as much about Joe Biden as it is Barack Obama. The fact that Joe is on the ticket is probably why NOW gave their endorsement to the Obama/Biden ticket, plus, when Biden drafted the VAWA, he recieved great support from NOW.

The article you blogged is pretty sexist in itself implying that the endorsement should have gone to McCain/Palin simply because Palin is a women, but she's done nothing as far as womens rights go.

Immunity to telecom companies, not striking back against the media when they claimed it was Hillary playing the race card, while Obama was blaming Black America for their own problems! It doesn't matter if NOW is doing it just because Biden is on there, now. NOW knows Obama's not going to actively progress women's liberation, and you have to take one with the other. They should be more likely to endorse the McCain/Palin ticket, even tho they're God-awful people running for office, and Palin is, without a doubt, a self-hating misogynist. And no where in my article am I implying it should've gone to Palin. They're merely stating they want to see what she's going to bring to the table, and unfortunately, she has the potential to gain many many votes from the deluded, ill-informed majority in this nation.
