btw I think the original idea was so people wouldn't date/marry on grounds of appearence, but like a lot of things in religion it gets taken out of context and used for tradition, rather than the real original reasons it has - I don't think things like that were ever really indended to be part of a religion, they were just with the local culture and got associated with the religion, even by the locals
