I like John Mayer. He reminds me a little of Neil Young ( his captivating voice and it's ability to stand alone or with very little instrumentation) except he's maybe, more smooth and soulful , though I think Neil Young is soulful as well, just different.
I think I'll try to find a favorite Neil Young song for my blog.
The first song I learned to play was Neil Youngs' Needle and the Damage Done. Most of Neil is easy to learn and play... he's kind of a three or four chord guy. Mayer however, is all over the fretboard with some much more complex chord changes. I think Mayer's singing is far beyond the quality of Young's, but I like them both too.
...one last thing, I believe Mayer could play any style of music he wants with ease, whereas Young is pretty locked into what he does. Favorite Young album: Reactor.

I have two acoustic guitars and want to learn to play them so very badly. Ihad some childhood issues with learning to play but now it's hard to find the time.
You're right about Neil Young and his simplicity. I just posted Harvest Moon which I think is my favorite song of his and what's nice about it is the simple chords, the singular guitar (when played live) and the enchanting melody as only he can do it.
John Mayer is more complicated (playing) but I still think he reminds me of Neil Young for some reason, though I do agree that Neil is locked somewhat whereas John is more versatile.
I play Harvest Moon in an open G tuning, that way you can get those cool harmonics in there.
A little practice each day when you have a chance... it's all cumulative.
