BLOG FUNCTION

Imagine you went to a function in a very large house where there were thousands of people. The purpose of the function was for people to share their personal selves either through stories of experiences, ideas or personal interests. Everyone was milling around, circulating from room to room and socializing and it was a pleasant experience.

After a few hours (months) people began to notice that there were a large number of people who stood out from the crowd. This was driven by human nature of course, as peoples' favorite subject of conversation is often other people. And from this chit-chat it became apparent many people were giving a different story to everyone they spoke to. The nature of their character became highly suspect.

The individuals in this suspect group claimed to be many things and often appeared to craft their social presentations to suit whomever they were speaking to, even going so far as to give a different name to every person they spoke.

Due to this odd behavior, it wasn't long before the best intentions of the function were laid to waste. The undoing was accelerated when such behavior became trendy and considered by some to be clever, or artistic.

That is how my experience with this Mindsay-blog-community has been. I have addressed this subject before, but my understanding of it is a little clearer on this round. In the past I have been nasty and irritating in my observations. I used phrases like "Mindsay-Police" and "Exclusive-Club" and  other pungent terms to describe my foul reaction to the general behavior here. Also, I made clear my general disdain  of the top-blog system emphasizing it's complete lack of validity.

Yes, I have expressed a lot of criticism of Mindsay here. But like I said earlier, I think I see things more clearly now. I have a new perspective on how things really work here. Let me tell you about it.

It's worse, much worse than I ever imagined. It is all fractionalized and segregated to the n'th degree. Just like life, everyone blogging finds their comfort zone and then battles to maintain and protect it. Protect it mostly from any form of criticism. Ok, I can deal with that. People don't like criticism in real life either. But it's the other thing that really puzzles and disappoints me.

I find now that I am having to go every day and block users. Why? Because of my recent realization of the prevalance of multi-identity bloggers. I call them chameleon-bloggers. They are constantly creating new blogs with new identities in some form of mass-marketing I guess, seemingly trying to appeal to the widest possible audience like it's a popularity contest or a ratings game. It's convoluted and a real strain and drain on those Mindsay bloggers who are trusting and sincere.

Three or four people are about all I ever regularly communicate here through comments or email. And it matters zero to me that anyone visits me or comments or votes. It doesn't matter. It doesn't mean a thing.

For me, this very promising function has been reduced, by it's actions, to a charade. Really, why would I or anyone want to connect to someone who has multiple presenses, communicates to you through all of them, but doesn't tell you. Would you attend a social gathering and give a different name and tell a different story to everyone you met?

And finally my revised understanding of the top-blog fiasco. Now it is clear that many "top-blog" are only there because these chameleon bloggers are voting themselves onto the list. What rubbish! Total nonsenese and bullshit. (Have always longed to end with "bullshit")

Bullshit!

P.S. Are you joking? "Mindsay Honors", "The Best of Mindsay" ? What a joke of an idea. Shameful, really most shameful I must say!

Re: BLOG FUNCTION
The really tragic part about this is that you're so right.  This place is turning into an Enclave of Narcissists in a hurry, and it seems like the old-timers are fleeing.

Maybe a tongue-in-cheek "Worst of Mindsay" Awards would be in order?
  • Best supporting sockpuppet.
  • Best extinct sockpuppet.
  • Best porn blog (readable by kids/unscreened a must).
  • Most conceited blog.
  • Fan Club of the Id Blogger of the Year.
  • Most graphic Video blog.
  • Blog that used "sex" tag the most in 2006.
  • Top interblog drama blog.
  • Blog most likely to sockpuppet itself to the top of "Top Blogs" in 2007.
One could have real demented fun with this.

Re: BLOG FUNCTION
Onewalrus,

Sorry this is happening to you. The "smoke people" (ones with no substance) always target those with substance (like you).

They can't be real, they can't have substance, but like smoke they can can take any form. But if you look right at them, you can see right through them.

You are real, you have substance, I enjoy reading your blogs. The "smoke people" want what you have, but know that between their ears, they will never generate substance. All they can do is shape shift, all they have is the facade of substance.

So as I see it, mindsay is haunted and the ghosts are currently haunting your blog.

If you give them substance by acknowledging their existance, you give them strength.

You have enough substance to not get blown down by "smoke".

Re: BLOG FUNCTION
what an interesting reply, ken, and you are absolutely correct...
some things are just not worth the effort and should just be ignored..i'd rather concentrate on the blogs of value and just leave the negativity to the others who like to slander.

Re: BLOG FUNCTION
interesting.....I didn't know people cared so much.   to be putting the time and effort into manipulating the mindsay community.
Would you rather do away with top blogs completely?

Re: BLOG FUNCTION
The "top-blog" is an absolute joke. Mindsay claims over 100 thousand users, but you see the same fifty people day in and day out on the "top-blog" thing.

Yes, do away with it, it means nothing. Certainly anyone would agree that a blog getting 9 votes out of a purported 100,000+  users is meaningless.

Re: BLOG FUNCTION
perhaps they have a lot of friends and family on here.  and of them, 9 who care to vote.
honestly, I never ever remember that there's a 'vote' feature on here.  There have been a few entries in my 2years here, that have moved me enough to do so, but generally I don't even think about top blog when I come here to blog.  blogging serves a totally different function for me.  I guess that's why I don't like to get involved with the political blogs or blogs with an agenda so much.  and I'm too busy talking about me to be talking about other people.  heh

On other sites, I've seen the option for giving props or individual ratings, but I wouldn't want those either.

Re: BLOG FUNCTION
I wondered how some people consistently got their blogs onto the top blog section, and thought that it was their friends that voted for them. But now, i can definitely see your point. It is easy to make multiple identities for yourself and go into your alters and vote for the other name.
I am slow to vote for top blog unless i am really impressed with what the person had to say, or usually in your case, to show.
And as for mindsay awards, if it were an above board thing with us nominating people worthy of different categories, it would be one thing, but if it is as you suggest, it will not end up being fair at all. So I am divided about it. I am not in blogging for and award recognition. However, if someone had to think I were worthy of a certain category, it would impress and please me, as everyone loves recognition in this thankless life.
And i know a lot of chamelions in this life as well; they try to make an impression on people according to what they want to hear, thus hearing about all the latest gossip and using the information as a spy would, selling it to the enemy.
this was a very thought provoking blog

Re: BLOG FUNCTION
Hi everybody.

I'm the director of this year's Mindsay Awards. I was directed to this post and wanted to take a moment to comment.

First, I agree with much of what you say here, onewalrus. Like you, I'm annoyed by bloggers who take on numerous identities and make up stories. I am trying hard to keep the awards this year from turning into a grade school student council election; that's not to say I'll be successful but I do think you should know that I too tire of deceit and dishonesty.

My goal with the Mindsay Awards really is to see that good blogs get showcased. Will people end up winning that probably don't deserve it? Yes. I imagine so. Any time you set something aside for distinction there is a level of subjectivity and I don't expect this production to be without some people feeling slighted. I am, however, trying to make the best out of a setup that is obviously not flawless. What is flawless on the Internet?

I have agreed with you on Top Blogs. Do I like it when I see one of my blogs show up there? Sure. Do I put a lot of stock in it? No.

I will be intently watching the Worst of Mindsay Awards. I think it's a great idea.

I'm trying (honest) to think of ways to make the Mindsay Awards less susceptible to manipulation by chameleon bloggers but still allow user participation. I hope in time some sort of system can be formulated that will do a better job at selecting bloggers for distinction. No human method of honoring accomplishments is an exact science and neither are the Mindsay Awards. I still hope that the Mindsay Awards, while not perfect, will serve to showcase at least a fragment of the great blogging and the blog diversity that exists every day at Mindsay.

-John
