The tenet of Christianity it this-
You must believe in Jesus. You must believe he died on the cross for your sins and accept that sacrifice.
But, what if you don't believe? What if everything in you tells you it's a lie? Can you force yourself to believe?
The answer to that is a resounding NO!
I was a Christian from the time I was a child because it was what I was taught as a child. I was even in the ministry. But , once I began to educate myself about the bible, it's origins, history, pagan religions there was no way I could believe.
But I hated losing my faith. All my friends were Christian and I didn't want to lose them too. So for nine years I tried to convince myself, that despite my mountain of doubt that it was true.
I prayed like a mad woman and studied the bible continually. And everyday ,the bible it's self convinced me more and more it was not true.
A person can not make themselves believe and no one else can make them believe either. Belief is not a choice. You either do or don't.To say you choose to believe is ludicrous.
But Christians say if you don't believe, you will burn in hell for eternity because you were unable to make yourself believe...even if you wanted to, tried too, but couldn't!
Is this what a just God would require? That you must force yourself to believe when it can't be done?
You can say I love Jesus I believe in Jesus all day long for forever but if you don't you just don't.
Only a face to face meeting with "God" could change my mind now, I simply I know too much.
And remember this oh "Christian nation", there was a time when most everyone believed the world was flat but there was one man who dared to dream otherwise and in the end , he was right!

Re: The stupidest thing about Christianity
good morning nyourface -

keep following your heart like you are doing!  it will lead you away from propoganda.  i don't buy into the christian philosophy either........it seems pretty silly to me.  and sort of barbaric.  i mean, really!   celebrating the fact that an innocent man was tortured to death!

i can't believe that any one human being (or tree or goat or spider) is any more divine than another.

so, if jesus ever lived at all, i believe he was a man, not a god.

i don't believe in hell, and  since i don't believe in an eternally bad place, i cannot believe in an eternally good place.  i DO believe in goodness.  in love and friendship.

You sound like a good, free thinking woman swingline!
You know the thought of purposely having my child tortured and hung on a cross and watching them die while they cry out to me "why have you forsaken me"?? Is barbaric beyond belief!!!!
For god so loved the world he gave his son???? Loved the world more than his son??/!!!!!Holy shit!!

Re: The stupidest thing about Christianity
I was fifth generation Seventh-day Adventist... so my entire LIFE was Christianity. I went to Adventist private schools most of my life and then went on to an Adventist college. Everything I did was centered around Adventism. My oldest daughter went to Adventist school until I pulled her out in 6th grade. When I actually started studying Adventism at 30 (I think), I realized I had to leave the religion. I cried and struggled and cried and fasted and prayed and just wished there was a different way... but I KNEW I didn't believe that crap anymore and couldn't live a life pretending like I did. About six years later, as I kept studying and fasting and praying and searching, hoping to find truth, I eventually came to realize I had to leave Christianity as well. After leaving Adventism, this next step wasn't so hard. Today all my friends know I've left Adventism, not very many know I've left Christianity all together. It's not an easy subject for most of them, and I don't want to traumatize them... and I don't want to have to deal with their bullshit rhetoric either. One friend pisses me to no end, as he keeps saying I've left for a reason, but I'll be back with a testimony. At some point I need to get comfortable with what he's saying. The truth of the matter is that I hope I'm never led to go back... ever.... aaaaacccckkkk.... never. I don't wanna be a sheep anymore.

Re: The stupidest thing about Christianity
I understand you and feel your pain!
When I "came out of the closet" so to speak and told one of my very dear Christian friends she went Christian postal on me! She wouldn't even listen to a word about why I had come to that place. She just kept screaming how the devil had a hold on me! Our friendship was ended. Her "bible" told her Christians were not supposed to be "unequally yoked" with non-believers and she stormed away saying she would be praying for me. As if I hadn't prayed myself silly along with close friends and believing family! How arrogant!
Now, I wish never to return but for years I tried with all my might to do just that. Now I am the only non christian in my family other than my hubby and  daughter in law. I would describe my kids as "agnostic".
I let them decide for themselves what they hold to be true!

Re: The stupidest thing about Christianity
Yesterday while taking my twins to a friend's baptismal party, we were talking about bible stories and I realized just how much the girls do NOT know about the bible. I told them the story about Noah and the flood,...their version of the story comes from the movie "Evan Almighty" pretty much. Of course, I told the story with cuss'n and all... to make it funny for them and irreverant for me ('cause that's what I like).

In the end, when they started talking about Christianity was stupid and such, I told them they had no foundation to call Christianity anything but unknown. I went on to tell them that they cannot base their opinions on something simply by what I or Richard or anyone else thinks and that they must study for themselves and then make an educated decision. I don't want my children blindly following me, I want them to BELIEVE the bible is a bunch of bullshit!!! (lol)

You mean "accept" not "except."

If you except something, you are excluding it, but in your first part there you mean almost the opposite.

Re: The stupidest thing about Christianity
The problem with most Christians is that they don't question the original source or sources of the bible. They don't question how authentic it is and in what historical context it was written. They don't even know how complete the bible is - if all the information or chapters have been found. Furthermore, with so many translations there's bound to have words or meanings to get lost in the process. Most devout Christians take the bible literally. It's like the Chinese Whispers or Telephone Game.
