Could the legalization of marijuana help "bailout" America from its financial troubles?

Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Fransico has introduced a bill (AB390) that would legalize and tax marijuana. Each one ounce sale would generate $50 in taxes resulting in aproximatly 1.3 billion dollars a year in tax revenues for California (http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/local/san_francisco&id=6674064. )

California already has laws for medical marijuana but federal laws do not support them.

I say 3 cheers for Tom Ammiano! It's about time someone took bold action in the fight for legalizing pot!

And hey, I don't even smoke it but I'm all for legalizing it! Why should drug lords profit from it? Legalized gambling took profits from the hands of the mafia and put it in the hands of the state. The same with alcohol and tobacco. You cannot legislate morailty. People are going to do what their going to do and that is a fact. Why not make it work in Americas favor?

There are some really bad drugs out there we should be fighting..like meth. That stuff is lethal. But pot does less harm than alcohol or tobacco. And let me tell you if more people smoked pot there would be a whole lot less fighting going on! Pot makes you lathargic, not angry like alcohol. As a matter of fact I highly reccommend it to our government and UN meetings. Those guys really need to chill! Also, people who are on "prozac" and other anti-depressants could benefit from its use!

I smoked pot and cigarettes from the time I was 13 till 37. One day, I laid them both down. I decided niether one was healthy so I just stopped. That was 13 years ago and I'm still "smoke free". My point...I didn't go nuts or freak out..I just stopped ..pure and simple. I have no desire to smoke though I have had a million chances. It's my choice not to. I don't drink either.

If pot becomes legal, it doesn't mean more people will smoke it. It just means America will benefit from the sale instead of the dealers. Prohibition only drove the alcohol bussiness "underground", it did not stop the sales.

Marijuana is big bussiness and the useless fight against it is costing Americans billions. We have an opportunity to turn this thing around.

If you believe pot should be legalized then you should join in the fight. A group called NORML is a group working to reform marijuana laws (http://www.norml.org/), you can find out more what you can do to help there. Also, write your congress, senators, govenors and the president and tell them you support its legalization.

Oh, great ganja! Weed master, pot princess, green man - help us all to sleep better and be less bitchy, and grant us the knowledge only discovered when high....

I'm not a smoker of it myself, but I do worry that one day, it'll be as taboo as sex and athiesm - and then the bad, tweaked varieties will be come prevalent which in turn can harm those we love who *do* smoke. Fact is, the government is losing money by NOT making it legal. Drug dealers would have to find new avenues of price gouging and taking over the black market. We don't realize that we are helping them line their pockets by making their sales the only means of getting it.

Let's legalize it, and see the real "bad people" go broke like the rest of us in this recession..

I think the time is right for sure. It hasn't hurt Amsterdam any and it might stop some of that bullshit going on down in Mexico!

Re: Marijuana bailout
the biggest problem from Mexico are "drugs" that are not "grown", so I don't believe that much would change in that respect
