Have you ever been driving down the road and seen an old cow surrounded by calves while all the other cows are off grazing? Well, that  bovine beauty is a "calf sitter". Yep, she keeps an eye on the little scamps while the mommies take a break and munch without interruption. Such an odd but dear practice in the animal kingdom.
I love cows. They're so docile and trusting. They eat, sleep, rear young and never complain or ask for anything. You see a little rough and tumble between calves, but generally they are peaceful and kind.

Well geese , now they're a whole different ballgame. They are easy to agitate and very vocal about it. They chase you down and bite your butt in a heartbeat. They even get annoyed with each other frequently.Their quite demanding and though they flock " together" I think it's all about safety. They take care of their babies and waddle around squawking all day till they get tired. Then then tuck their head under their wing and sleep until they're rested then they wake up and start all over again!

Turkeys, well they're just stupid. Range turkeys are pissed off at the world and turkeys raised in houses are clueless. They like to grab your shoelaces because they think they have found a "white worm" that must be eaten. They live to eat.....and to freak out. They'll spook in a heart beat and crowd to the end of the turkey house until they suffocate one another.I think it's living in those unnatural houses that makes them so nuts. They never seem to learn anything!
Wild turkeys are beautiful and  majestic. In fact the turkey was almost our national bird instead of the eagle.

Now dogs, they're much like humans. They vary in their personalities. Some are sweet and gentle, trusting and loyal. You can let them out in the yard and find them laying under a tree a few hours later. They want to curl up in your lap or by your side because their favorite place is with you.
But, others are angry, always looking for a fight.Let them out and they're gone with the wind. They keep to themselves and don't care if you ever show them any affection.
Dogs seem to display every emotion we have. Love, hate, pride, envy, jealousy, anger.
I can't imagine a world without dogs.

Now pigs....pigs suck.

I'm a goose. What are you?

Re: Bovine babysitter
Having kept rats, they seem to have the same practice as cows. Or a similar one, anyway. We'd have a couple of females together in the same cage who had both recently given birth to the same litter, and  rather than just the baby rats drinking milk from their mother, quite often I'd see all the babies drinking from just one of the mothers while the other mother had a break, and then they'd swap over.

I don't mean two females gave birth to teh same litter, I meant they both gave birth to a litter at the same time.

LOLL! yeah , I was with ya there!
I think nature is fascinating! I love watching and studying both people and animals... they are amazing!
I think one of the strangest things is "pack mentality".
Take water buffalo for instance. When a pair of lions charges a large herd they run like hell trying to get away. But if they would all stop and ban together and turn on the lions, they could quickly and easily stomp his ass to death! But they don't even consider it. They just run because everyone else is running. No one stops and says "hey, wait a minute. Lets kick that lions ass". Nope. It's just 'gotta go, gotta, go gotta go".
I seen many people exhibit that same behavior.

I'm a cat.  I expend a lot of energy in short periods of time, then take long naps.

Re: Bovine babysitter
Ah ha! My observations about the cat.
They like to like themselves...a lot! <wink> They can be persnickety and aloof. They want what they want when they want it and not before. They are particular who they choose to hang with and consider themselves as the "boss". They don't much like to share but can entertain themselves with a piece of string. They love a game of sport and can torture a bug or mouse for hours. They are clean, generally quite and usually the companions of smart, educated people! <smile>

Docile and trusting?  We're not talking about the same animal here.

Been bitten by geese.

And pigs aren't that bad.

Re: Bovine babysitter
Our angus cows were sweet! They would follow out pickup around the farm and we could pet all of then. Then again, we were kind to our cows....and we are "civilized". Maybe your cows know you are uncivilized.Hummmmm.....,<smile>
Seriously, for the most part cows graze, eat and shit. They don't really screw with anybody who doesn't screw with them.
I still say pigs suck. There mean, they'll eat anything that doesn't eat them first ..alive or dead. I saw a baby chick run into the pig pen and the pig just grabbed in in it's jaws and swallowed it down Gulp! It was gone! And pigs are stupid. You fill their water trough and they think it's a swimming pool.
Pigs suck!

the baby chick incident would have made a lasting negative impression on me too.

Re: Bovine babysitter
Depends what you feed pigs.  Pigs don't usually develop that bloodlust, consume anything attitude unless you feed them meat scraps.

Re: Bovine babysitter
My mother was almost killed by hogs who had been fed meat.  Once they get a taste for blood, they'll kill, but otherwise, they're great animals.  And if you setup their area properly, and maintain it, very clean animals.
