My advice: If your cat is an outdoor cat, wait until the summer to do it. You never know if the temperature is going to drop down again and give the cat a rude awakening. It has fur for a reason...But hey - your cat, your choice...
Matted fur in cats can signify a medical problem because many cats are fastidious about their grooming habits. When they discontinue to be interested in grooming themselves, this can signify a health concern. Many cats become too obese to reach certain areas of their fur, thus resulting in mats. Mats, themselves can become medically significant because the tissue (skin) underneath can become moist and infected with bacteria.I knew the effects of matted fur but I also looked it up to get technical to help out.

I don't think its cruel... you can groom your pet however you want.If I thought that was cruel, I'd have to come down hard on my parents for what they do to their poodle.
Nah its not cruel. If it will help her in the long run. Mmm I think I suggested doing that! haha. But really having matted fur is really bad for kitties.
