Movies (and other things) seen in 2006:
Superman (1978) - A classic hero movie. Can't adequately rate this in any way, as it has been around forever. I'm also completely tied up (emotionally) with this movie because Christopher Reeves reminds me of my dad. American Pie: Band Camp - Uck. The funny parts weren't funny. The leads weren't interesting. Yuck. Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Season 4 - It's still a funny alternative cartoon about a milkshake, an order of fries, a wad of meat and other assorted odds and ends. Sort of like looking in a kid's pocket after they've played all day at the park... Drawn Together: Season 1 - This show comes across as desperate. Desperate for laughs and hijinks. Just when I was ready to give up on it, it started coming together. Too bad it was one of the last episodes. Barbarella - I once saw this late at night on a public television station, (go public teevee!) Chilly hadn't and we could get it from the library easy enough (go libraries!). Still terribly kitsche. Still terribly dated. Still terribly, terribly fun. Rushmore- I've never seen this film. I really enjoyed this character movie. There's no way a film like this could have been made more than ten years ago. Underworld: Evolution - I liked it. It was popcorn. The first was popcorn and this sequel is popcorn. Brokeback Mountain - The hubbub makes this out to be an awesomely, fantastic, gay-cowboy movie. It was a very good, fantastic, gay-cowboy movie. Batman Begins - Originally saw this in the theater. Rewatched it at home. It's a good direction for Batman. It was better in the theater. Land of the Dead - This is the second time I saw this movie. The first time was in the theater. It's not as funny and not as ... sigh ... good as I remembered. Which makes me think on the nature of viewing movies at the theater and how anticipating a movie can change your perception (for good or bad), again. Veronica Mars: Season 1 - Love this show! Love it, love it! The characters are loveable and understandable. The dialogue is so witty and fast and beautiful. The charisma and interaction of the cast is touching. The story is tight! Million Dollar Baby Dangerous Beauty Walk the Line The Corpse Bride Silent Hill
X-Men 3 Ultraviolet - This film tried to convince us that there was a comic book before the movie. Silly filmmakers. Making the characters shallow and the story plain only convinces us that you don't know the real draw of a comic book. LolliLove - A faux documentary about two people that want to give lollipops with inspirational sayings to the homeless. Superman Returns - Such a beautiful film. It treads very lightly- nay affectionately -over Christopher Reeves' Superman. Nacho Libre - Jack Black is floating in my heart in the fetal position. Everytime I see or hear his comedy, he burst out of my chest and encourages me to act even younger than I do now. Deep Blue Sea - A film that is firmly ensconced within our Creature Feature collection, alongside Tremors. Just fun. The Transporter - This film's action scenes are powerful and poetic. The acting is succinct; perfect. Spaceman - Local boys (creators of The Onion) made a full length film about an alien-abductee (as a child) that crash lands on Earth (as a warrior-man). Small budget. Aeon Flux (series) - After three episodes it dawned on me that each episode is a vignette; a what-if supposing that two characters are plopped down into a series of unrelated events and the only rule is that neither of them is good or bad, but both think they're right. Pirates of the Carribean 2 - This sequal suffers the same listlessness of other middle movies. Still, it's beautiful and entertaining. An adequate bridge to the third film. Mission Impossible 3 - Despite an irrational fear of Tom Cruise and all that he stands for, I enjoyed this film. Though, I am three times glad we watched it at the budget theater. Cemetary Man - Adorable Italian flick about a man that must keep the dead within his cemetary's walls- based on the book Dellamorte Dellamore. Think horror, comedy and a slight bit of romance. Clerks 2 - Fans of the first Clerks will like this bookend movie. Aeon Flux (movie) - Watching the series really does help this anemic film. Shaun of the Dead - I love this film. I would put it in a top ten catagory. [Chilly pointed out: Except for the Top Ten Crappiest Movie list.] Everything is Illuminated - Elijah Wood's eyes deserve their own award in this Warner Independent film about mixed up, uncertain characters. Saw 2 - Not as bad (as in crappy) as I thought it would be. On par with the first. Better (which isn't saying much) acting than the first. Night Watch - A beautiful Russian film about supernatural Good and Bad keeping each other in check. Scream - A film that was an instant classic. last 1/4 of Scream 2 - Coming into the last part of the show suspends belief- so I was asking myself: Why would they let a victim of stalking and attempted murder just walk away from the scene of a series of crimes and off into the sunset? Oh, spoiler. Scream 3 - A fine conclusion to the trilogy. And by fine I don't mean "detailed"... I mean "alright". Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake) - I honestly love this one and despise the first one. Chasing Amy - For some reason, this viewing left me cold. I couldn't stand the characters... well, except for Jay and Silent Bob. V for Vendetta - Surreal and comic-book awesome. Match Point - A beautifully executed movie that you don't want to waste your time on. Good Night and Good Luck - This movie is a must, if for no other reason than the history. Funny, sad and meaningful. The type of meaningful that each person Pulse - *shrugs* I liked some of the ideas behind what was going on but overall, "meh". Snakes on a Plane - The internet phenom that I was happily on board for- the movie being the exclamation point. Dead & Breakfast - Funny little horror-comedy. Not Shawn of the Dead caliber, though still good. Public Access - Terrible movie. No redeeming value. Everything was off kilter, like the idea behind the script was polluted by the directing and the actors rode rough shod over the lines. Potential? Yes. Disappointment? Yes. Veronica Mars, Season 2 - *happy sigh* I enjoy this shows wit, dialogue, characters, friendships, relationships, actors, directing. Even the music. Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy - I was very excited to watch this show, an inside look at the porn industry via the life of one of the most well-known performers. Besides some slightly titillating moments this movie was flaccid. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Musical- I mean The Beginning- It was dumb. I wish it were a musical. You could have Leatherface sing some dramatic opera (oh the superficial irony!). The teens would be singing only in screams. Even at the start- instead of dialogue they could make little mewling screams and pretend they are talking. It might be a long way for a joke, for that moment when -finally- one of them gets to really scream... beautiful. Project Grizzly - Some people have too much money and sooo much passion. Borat- We spoke with stilted accents for hours afterward. Pornstar Pets-We got this the same time we got "The Legend of Ron Jeremy". Where that film failed, this one shown for all the same reasons. Little Miss Sunshine - This movie was adorable.
