A common misconception by non-Christians about Heaven is that it is all about the promise of eternal life. However, to a mature Christian, the allure of Heaven is not the promise of eternal life, but to be in the presence of God.

In the days of the early church, Christianity had trouble competing (before Augustine's intervention) because all the other religions of the time rewarded with the possibility of becoming gods whereas Christianity's reward was merely to have the opportunity to be able to worship God for all of eternity.

But to a mature Christian, the desire is there and the eternal life thing? Well, we're happy about that, too, because it means we can worship God all that more.

If you want to criticise us for being too willing to prostrate, then go ahead. But don't say it is egotism. Because if you do, you probably don't understand us at all.

Oh, and it's not all about the afterlife, either. There is much joy to be had in this life, too.

Exactly so and amen!!

That's why we were instructed to pray "As it is in heaven"...right? We are to walk in the promises of God for here and now and purpose in our hearts towards the Hope in Glory!  I dont even give thought too often to the 'afterlife' do you? I mean sometimes I may mull it over for a moment or two, but I figure I will have eternity to absorb all of that then!! Hah. For now, today, my purpose is to be a Christ Follower and allowing the HS to indwell in me to touch others and share the Good news!

His presence is and will be too amazing for words...

Thanks for this, nimbo.

My problem with that is that it would seem Heaven also presents and end to free will. Without sin, including impure thoughts, set to praise God with mind and body for all eternity, any claim to free will would be nominal only, as we'd all be automatons. Hell might suck, but at least we'll still be free to contemplate how much it sucks.

Re: I'd rather live one day in your presence than a thousand elsewhere.
Here's the thing that confuses me. They say angels have no free will and were created to praise God , but Christians do it willingly of their own choice.
However, Lucifer "choose" to  rebel and took many angels with him who "choose" to  take Lucifers side in the rebellion.. So, maybe there will be "free will" in heaven and everyone will "choose " to do right because God will be close enough to kick their ass if they don't! Yeah right.

If everyone choses the same thing, or we're free to choose one thing, then free will is nominal.

Re: I'd rather live one day in your presence than a thousand elsewhere.
I, personally, do believe we will have free will in the afterlife. How this will work, I don't know, but I also believe we will also know the truth of everything, and everything good, so I imagine it might be like this:

Here is your favourite food of all time, and there will be absolutely no negative consequences to eating it, and there's always more where that came from, too. But you have free will in regards to whether you want to eat it or not.

But that's just me imagining. I am certainly not sure.

Most of the fun I have in life is overcoming the challenges. That sounds dull.

Re: I'd rather live one day in your presence than a thousand elsewhere.
-shrugs- that was just an analogy, and not a very good one at that. There is no indication that there will be food in heaven, at all. But you can't really compare how we experience things on Earth with how we will experience things in Heaven. We will all have new bodies, and who knows what those bodies are designed to do, feel, overcome?

For the record, I also don't believe that we will be sitting on clouds playing harps for eternity, either. One vision of Heaven I have heard, which I particularly like, is that we will all have jobs (unemployment rate zero) which will be challenging and hard, and will not weary us, but satisfy us. We will have a house in the city and a house in the country, and the house in the country will be one we build with our own hands.

I do not know if this is what it will be like, it is just one of many ideas people have had of heaven, but I like it; the indication that Heaven is not a retirement city, but the life for which this existance is merely preparing us for.

No matter what it is... it'll get boring in a few thousand years.

Re: I'd rather live one day in your presence than a thousand elsewhere.
As far as the mythology goes, as far as I understand it, anyway, is that angels have "free will" but unlike humans, do not have the chance for redemption.

The story of Lucifer is Christian mythology. If you stick strictly to the book of Genesis, the serpent is not identified. Some versions may identify him as "Satan" but Satan merely means "enemy" or "adversary", does not necessarily mean Lucifer. It depends on how you interpret it. I'm not saying that it is not the correct way to interpret it, I'm not saying it is. But it's a detail that doesn't really relate to what I was trying to say.

What happens if you sin in heaven? Well, sin isn't supposed to exist in Heaven. This doesn't mean there is no free will because you'll still have decisions to make, or so I imagine, it's just that neither decision is sin.

My definition of sin is anything that blocks human from God. And I'll say that Heaven is being in the direct presence of God. This is why sin cannot exist in Heaven. You can always make the decision to not be in Heaven, of course. But you can't simultaneously sin and be in Heaven at the same time. Or so it seems to me.

Re: I'd rather live one day in your presence than a thousand elsewhere.
Another thought: there will not be laws in heaven in the same way there are laws on Earth, so "committing a sin" is not as simple as breaking a rule or disobeying a law. To be in Heaven, I think, in order to sin you actually have to make the wilful decision to turn away. So if there is banishment from Heaven, which I'm not saying there is, but I'm just thinking here, it wouldn't be for punishment for doing something wrong. It would be because you conciously and willfully made the decision to leave Heaven.

This is something I just thought of then, though. So it's a new idea for me. I do not claim this to be truth, or what I believe, I'm just exploring a new idea.

Re: I'd rather live one day in your presence than a thousand elsewhere.
I see heaven as a place created by people who were afraid of the "unknown". The thought of "nothingness" was just to scary a notion.
Early man was so afraid of the dark. When the sun set the earth became a place full of danger. So they waited for the the light of the "sun" to "return". We'll be eternally with the "light" was a comforting thought for in the light all was revealed. Christianity is simple "sun worship" mixed with other old , pagan beliefs such as the trinity , sons of god and virgin births.
Christianity is chocked full of pagan "sun worship" and astrology. When people didn't have TV's to watch , they watched the stars, told stories, and found comfort in the fact the night and darkness would end when the light returned.

What an amazing truth!! It is so true. I still think sometimes that I want/need to go to heaven so that I don't suffer eternally in hell. But, then i hear the words to songs like your title and I can not even imagine what I will do when I see Jesus.

My heart swells and my eyes tear when i think of how truly amazing it will be.
