Today is Martin Luter King Day in the United States. Above is video of his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

King, who would be 79 years old if he were still alive, would surely see this year's US Presidential election as a sign of how far things have come since he lead the civil rights movement. Among the leading candidates this year: a black man, a woman, and a Morman.

We should get a holiday for every person who has died.  Ever.  Then we wouldn't have to do jack shit all year long.  It'd be like putting the whole world on welfare.

I have a problem with saying that is an accomplishment. We will only have come a long way when everyone quits looking at race and gender. You just did.

Liberals love welfare. It keeps them from starvation.

No wonder they have so much time to complain.

uhh, MLK Day is not about having a day off, hopefully you can get past that too

I didn't have a day off.  I mock people who do take days off for silly things.  Only good reason to not work is a broken back, and only then if you aren't good with your hands.

He's not the only important or good man to ever live.  He's just a famous one with enough lobbyists at the time to get him a holiday.

If we celebrated the birthday of every important American, we wouldn't have a single work day.

The only other American holiday to retain the name of an individual is Columbus day, and he wasn't even an American.

Re: Martin Luther King Day
I always considered MLK as ons who wanted us to work for a better place for everyone rather than sitting on out butt and speculating about who is responsible for why we aren't getting more from the government. He talked about personal responsibility, and he set that example.

Me? I worked the day, I was scheduled. We are 7x24 Network Ops Center, Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving and MLK day because we serve people and we can't go on holiday. And there are lots of jobs like that, the people who serve people, they range from Hospital employees to electric companies, to telephone companies, to police, fire, and if I missed one that you are that has the same kind of schedule, My apology, and you have my respect.

I feel it is more in honoring his memory to work to make it better....
