Some deem them outlandish, while others have devoted websites to the current popular trend known as "emo" or "scene" hair. Reminiscent of 80's fashion, the most typical emo hair style is an androgynous lopsided cut with highlights to create an asymmetrical effect.

Though these hairstyles are considered trends of teenage culture, they can be known to be very elegant looks such as on former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and popstar Rihanna. What is so unnatural about these two beautiful ladies?  Science says symmetry.

Studies have been done since the early 90's proving that symmetry is what makes a person attractive, and now Professor Marcus du Sautoy of Oxford University is speaking out about the particular hairstyle, which began nearly three decades ago.

He plans to argue his case at the upcoming Cheltenham Science Festival, based on the facts that in nature, diseased mothers often bear asymmetrical young, making their health an issue when it comes to choosing the right mate.

Is beauty really skin deep or do these facts hold truth? Do humans still reserve primordial instincts when it comes to who they love? Or can we really judge a book by its cover?

Re: "Emo Hair" is Not Natural -- Really!
Anyone who thinks humanity is anything more than the sum of our habits and instincts is an idiot.  Sure, we're capable of intelligent thought, or at least that's what they say, I'm not convinced.

It's true, this thing is a bit more masculine-looking than the average emo, but labeling them as belonging to one sex or the other is, at this point, completely superfluous. It is more accurate to categorize the lot of them as an asexual mutation, a regressive evolutionary step that erases any recognizable gender-specific trait in the subject.

Then... how do they mate?  Is it sort of like earthworms?

Re: "Emo Hair" is Not Natural -- Really!
I don't think they do. I mean, they appear to like tonsil hockey a lot, so I might be wrong about that. I don't think they seek to reproduce. Rather, they proselyte.

Virus...

I don't want to think about that. A virus actually duplicates its genetic structure. If this contact strain becomes airbourne, I'm declaring martial law.

At that point, it will do no good.

Brings a whole new meaning to the term "black plague," doesn't it?

I assure you, there are many reasons to not have sex with that guy that don't involve his hair.

I like this hairstyle not because of symmetry, but because usually people pick a highlight color that complements their skin tone and eyes.  And when people mess this part up, they look like morons, much akin to bronze-tanned ladies with bleach-blonde hair and unrealistically bright blue eyes.

Symmetry can kiss my ass.  And I try hard to be symmetric on myself, too.

That last bit sounds like something my mom did. She bleached her hair and then got a tan, and it looked really awful. My aunt made her dye it back to a darker color.

Good.  Where do people get the idea that just because X is good and Y is good that X+Y is good?

...yes, I believe that, at least, is an unavoidable conclusion.
