I don't even know how to comment on this. That is so unbelievably low, in any context.
Well duh. I don't feel sorry for him. If this is how he really feels, then why would he work in that profession? And another duh. I'm sure he's seen Big Brother before, he ought to know that "every word you say is on camera" hence the name, Big Brother. He's officially a fuck wad. There is a major difference, in my opinion and I'm sure many people would disagree, between calling someone a retard for doing something stupid, and actually using in a derogatory fashion towards someone with a mental illness.
Well thats the thing isn't it. Calling someone a 'retard' for doing something stupid is still derogatory towards people with mental illness because it implies that anyone who is retarded is stupid.
Yeah, that's like saying all people who are short aren't tall.
To be retarded is to have an IQ of less than 70, people with an IQ under 70 ARE stupid.
To be retarded is to have an IQ of less than 70, people with an IQ under 70 ARE stupid.
No doubt, but the presence of stupidity in one place does not erase it from another. A person with an IQ of 160 IS smarter than someone with an I.Q. of 70, I do believe that. However I also believe that is no more a measure of someone's capabilities or potential than height or hair color. Someone with an I.Q. of 70 can make all the right decisions in their life and lead a life that is inspired and worth emulating, while a genius can end up in an alley eating beans out of a can in his underwear just as easily as the next guy.
Well if you are going to look at the opposite ends of the spectrum, sure. However, on both ends that covers a small percentage of society. The truth of the matter is that IQ means very little when it comes to most of us. Like you said, it has very little to do with a person's capabilities. I know a guy who has an IQ of about 150 and he can hardly hold down a job. Who cares what your IQ is when you can't function in society? Social intelligence, creativity and tactile intelligence is never measured on these tests. Those are some of the most important types intelligences to have in our society.
I would suggest though that the lack of social skills or social intelligence is possibly the result of who composes most of society. If 150 were an average I.Q., with most people being about that intelligent, I doubt he would have nearly as much trouble interacting, whereas a person of average intelligence who has little or no problems with social interaction might find it quite difficult if everyone around them suddenly had severe mental retardation, which they would have to in order to make an appropriately symmetrical analogy. If an average IQ is about 100, than life for a person with an IQ of 150 among the average is somewhat like that of an average person surrounded by people with IQs of about 50.
Nope. Supposedly Bill Clinton has an IQ of 145 and there are plenty of college professors and scientists with high IQ's who don't have problems with social interaction. The ability to socially interact has been recognized as a type of intelligence. Some people are good at it and have a knack for it and some people don't. It's just pretentious to say, "oh, they're on a much higher level of thinking than most people so they can't relate to them." Some people are just dumb about relating to other people. Some people lack the ability to pick up on social cues and facial expressions or they lack the ability to empathize with others. You find these deficits in people with different ranges of IQ scores.
Some people are, but your likelihood of being unable to socially interact increases drastically with increases in intelligence, as your desire to hug strangers increases with decreases in intelligence. The whole, that's not always true so therefore it's never true argument doesn't hold much water with me. But then, I suppose you can always go write a blog about people who generalize and why they're all wrong and you're right.
Why would I do that? That would be a terribly boring post. Everyone already knows I'm always right.
There is a network of areas in the brain including the amygdala, fusiform gyrus and the medial prefrontal cortex that is responsible for social interaction. They call this network the "social brain". There is no evidence that more intelligent people have an abnormality in the "social brain" area, yet there is evidence that some people with autism have abnormalities in this area. As stated previously by someone else (I can't remember and I'm too lazy to scan these threads) some people with autistic related syndromes are highly intelligent and some are of below average intelligence.

I was refering more the to negative conotations. If something bad happens and you say "thats gay" then you are indirectly saying that to be gay is a bad thing.
This is what I meant by "I'm sure many people will disagree" the thing is.I don't think of people with with mental disabilities as "retarded" I think of them as having learning/mental disabilities. To ME "retards" are people who know better, and yet do things/say things/ act ways they know they shouldn't. I would never, in public or private, behind their back or to their face call anyone with a mental disabilities a retard.
I'm glad he was fired if that's all he thinks of the children he works (oops, worked) with. Perhaps it's time for him to find a new profession since he thinks it's suitable to call the children he worked with "retards" on national TV. However, I don't think it's enough to have the entire show pulled. Yes, it's offensive, but there's a ton of offensive things being said on TV all the time.
Although I think the remark stinks I have a hard time with someone who is not a party to or impacted by the employer-employee relationship meddling. If he had done that as an official act of his job I would be 100% behind the employer. I think the employer is wrong and I would sue....
The statement wasn't connected with the company. The company doesn't have a gripe.
This kind of argument, that people would pull business was used to by companies to not hire blacks, hispanics, etc. It was wrong then, it is now.
The kind of sucks that every word is on camera, that is a crock. They knew that when they went on the show.

Big Brother Season 9 contestant Adam Jasinski has a surprise waiting for him when he returns to the real world: he’s been fired from his job at the United Autism Foundation. Jasinski was captured on camera calling autistic children “retards,” a comment that has drawn criticism from autism groups and has some people even calling for the show to be pulled from CBS.
