First I went to work today and had to deal with my annoying co-worker for 4 hours. I did well, but I was a little mean in a sneaky way.  See, she has this annoying habit of dominating people's conversations. Anytime someone comes in to say hello to me, Ms. Cantankerous takes over the conversation and I can't get a word in edgewise.  My aunt Fannie, who is responsible for turning me into a Trekkie, likes to come by to say hello sometimes if she goes to first service.  The annoying coworker found out my aunt was a nurse and now when aunt Fannie comes in, I can hardly say hello! The entire conversation suddenly turns into a whine fest  about her aches and pains and her elderly, sick siblings and in-laws.

Another young lady who used to do childcare and watch the kiddo a lot likes to come in and say "hi" to the kiddo and me.  We usually like to chit-chat about her ever increasing family. Today, I think I was able to utter a few phrases before Ms. Cantankerous took over the conversation.  Environgirl called me while I was at work to make plans to get together so we could get stuff for her Ren Faire costume.  I was asking her what her theme was and trying to get an idea of what type of costume she wanted and wouldn't you know that that annoying co-worker of mine was butting into my telephone conversation and trying to put in her two cents????

I got fed up and decided to hold an entire conversation with Ms. N, who has a very thick Bolivian accent and speaks Spanglish at best.  Since Ms. Cantankerous always complains about not being able to understand a word Ms. N says, I knew it would annoy the shit out of her if I were talking to her about how she met her husband and how she came to to the US.  My Spanglish is pretty good and I am very good at understanding people with thick accents. I think this is because my sister had a speech impediment when she little and I was the only one in the family who could understand her. It was hilarious to watch Ms. Cantankerous trying to follow the conversation, and it was good to know that once Ms. N gets a chance to talk, she can be quite verbose!
Ms. N : Weel, mi husband he..ehm trabajo with the los aviones and he...ehm...they send him to Europa! He like it very much, but he had to learn...ehm....I don't know what to call....ehm Allemand?

Me: Really?? I didn't know that! Did you get tickets to travel too since he worked for the airline?

Ms. N: Oh no! I no like to travel!

Me: Allemand?  So your husband had to learn German?

Ms. N: Yes, but you know eet was so fun. He had to go to school with the childrens!

Me: *laughing albeit a bit affectedly*

Ms. Cantankerous: *sitting in annoyed silence*

Anyway, like I wrote earlier, Environgirl and I spent the day trying to get her barbarian costume together.  We had fun being silly and just hanging out.  It was nice to see her again.  She surprised me because she bought me two dresses and a cute shirt.  They fit nicely and the dresses will come in handy as I expand.

However, the day was almost ruined because as we walked back to the car, the kiddo, Egirl and I noticed a car with three kids under the age of three left alone! The youngest was an infant of about eight or nine months!  I guess this idiot thought everything would be okay because she left the car running!  Egirl and the kiddo went to get Walmart security and I stood by the car to make sure they were okay.  We were livid!

Re: Mixed Bag Sunday
Gawd, I so would love to meet Ms. Cantankerous... she sounds much like my psycho-bitch-from-hell mother... I found ways to shut her up too!

You need to share tips.  I'm afraid that one day, Ms. N may run out of things to say and I'll no longer have a buffer.

Re: Mixed Bag Sunday
I can usually understand heavy accents better than my husband, and I always enjoy doing that passive-aggressive cutting him out of the conversation thing.  I'm so mean!

I hope those people who left their young children unattended in a RUNNING VEHICLE were turned over to the police.  MORONS!

Re: Mixed Bag Sunday
LOL! It was mean, but it was nice to be able to have a conversation with out someone butting in for once.

I was so disgusted with that woman! When she finally got to her car me, Egirl and another group of people who stopped gave her the dirtiest looks imaginable.

ha! I'm southern enough and have taken just enough Spanish to understand what Mrs. N said.

Cool strategy.

Re: Mixed Bag Sunday
Thanks! Like I said to Labsnaby, it was nice to have a conversation with someone without Ms. Buttinsky dominating the conversation.

Oh the Ms Cantankerous sagas lol -- your stories about her crack me up.

omg! Who the hell is going to leave their kids in a car, I mean, honestly!!

Re: Mixed Bag Sunday
She's really something else.

I couldn't believe she left those babies in the car -- at Walmart no doubt! There is no way you can just dash in an out of a Walmart (not that you should ever leave your kids in the car for any reason).

Hell, I hate leaving the room when kids are under my care lol -- I even have anxiety attacks about it!

I can't wait to see yours and Egirl's finished costumes!!

That woman who left her kids alone would have gotten more then dirty looks from me! I'm not one to keep my mouth shut when it comes to idiots. I'm surprised you didn't give her an ear full!!

Re: Mixed Bag Sunday
Believe me, sometimes I am so shocked or outraged by something that I can't afford to say anything.  I already did a stint in the county jail once. I ain't trying to go back.  People leaving their kids in cars is only something I've seen on television.  I couldn't believe I was seeing it in real life! I remember being in my driveway and realizing I left something in the house.  I would take the kiddo out of her car seat and bring her with me just to go back and get it. I was that paranoid!

Re: Mixed Bag Sunday
Wow, that's pretty funny, taking the kiddo in the house with your for a second to grab something! I have left mine napping in the car on a nice day, and checked on them, but I would only do that in my own driveway. I've also left all 4 kids in the car with the engine running, and the doors locked (I had my key fob) while running into a convenience store. Of course my oldest is 10, so I would think it's legal. I would never do that on a really hot, or really cold day. Doing this also depends on where you live!! But never Walmart! That's just plain stupid!!!

Some day you are going to have to tell me why you spent time in the county jail.

Re: Mixed Bag Sunday
Yeah, if your oldest is 10, that's different. She could run and get help if something happened.  I think the oldest kid in this case was 3.

Maybe someday.
