I thought it would be fun for my Mindsay friends to list things about themselves that shatter myths and stereotypes about their race, gender, religion or sexuality.  I'll go first:

My name is Myclette and I am a black, American, Methodist, female who is a Trekker(ie)

All though I am black:

I can NOT rap. I've tried, it was sad...very, very, sad.

I did NOT get a minority scholarship I did however get a band scholorship. I played clarinet so the horn was black, but I don't think that counts as affirmative action.

I did NOT grow up in 'da hood. My parents are upper middle class. I grew up more like the kids on the Cosby Show.

I am a horrible athlete, although I was / am pretty limber and a good dancer. I took ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance.

I only have one baby and one baby daddy -- er husband.

All though I am American:

I DO know how to locate things on a map.

I DO try to follow foreign politics.

I do NOT automatically get annoyed when people from other countries don't speak English well. As long as they are trying to speak to me in English I have no beef with them.  English is a terribly hard language that constantly breaks its own rules. Besides, have you heard my French? It's horrible! I would hope that if I ever visit France, Montreal, Martinique or St. Lucia or even Haiti (one my ancestorial countries) I run into people who are patient with me while I murder their language.

Although I am female:

I am NOT a chocoholic. I only crave chocolate during that time of the month, along with a lot of different foods.

I do not run in horror at the sight of bugs.

I am NOT proned to crying. (I just don't cry much, not matter how upset I am.)

I am not a domestic. When I was a kid I would have rather helped my dad fix things around the house  than help my mom in the kitchen. I liked handing my dad tools when he worked on the cars.

Though, I am a Trekker:

I did have dates.

I do have social skills.

Other than that, most of the stereotypes apply to me.

Although I am Christian:

I do NOT hate gays or think they chose to be gay.

I do NOT impose my beliefs on anyone else.

I LOVE science and all things scientific.

Awesome idea!

I do not have "more fun" than my contemporaries.
I am not a ditz.
I don't spend hours a day on my hair.  Minutes, maybe. If I'm lucky.

Though I am Southern Baptist --
I do not boycott Disney
I do not place myself as a doormat under my husband's feet
I do enjoy dancing, a glass of wine on occasion, and even a strawberry daiquiri.

Though I am female --
I do not experience PMS. Ever.
I am not a poor driver.
I don't like asking for directions. ;-)

These are so awesome Sandy! You are definitely not a ditz. As a matter of fact, I think you are one of the smartest women I know.

Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
Hmm, I don't follow the stereotyping trends so I'm not sure if this will work.

I CAN rap.

I DON'T have a lot of money.

Although my ancestors were Irish-

I am NOT an angry drunk. I'm just angry!!

Although I like to shave my head-

I am NOT a member of the KKK.

Although I am a man-

I DON'T like working on cars.

I DON'T own a tablesaw.

I DO like cats.

Although I live in Texas-

I DON'T live on a ranch.

I DON'T wear a giant hat.

I DON'T have any guns.

I DON'T wear a giant beltbuckle.

I love this one! LOL! I hate that stereotype, and why on earth is it that a white dude can't shave his head without being thought of as a skinhead?

P.S.  You'd look pretty funny with a big assed belt buckle and a ten gallon hat. It is so not you.

Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
It would be funny! Check this out...

Earlier today I was at this store getting gas. There was a big Ford truck out front blasting some Cypress Hill. I was wondering who would be doing this. Inside the store there were two gentlemen: One short hispanic buying some beer and a white guy with the 10-gallon hat and beltbuckle.

Take a guess which guy got in the truck after leaving the store.

Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
Hmmm - I am trying to think of ways that I break stereotypes.  Its funny because I break them for one category but they fit quite neatly into another... But lets see...

I am a white, lesbian, brunette, Baptist and the only girl out of 8 kids.

Even though I'm white....

I CAN dance

I can rap.

I can jump.  lol

I don't think I'm better than anyone else.

Even though I am lesbian....

I have a great sense of style, even if its not foofy feminine.

I do not have a pet cat.

I do not hate men.

I do not dislike gay men or transgendered people.

I'm not mean (or I try not to be) or a bully

I am not very athletic

I do not like to watch football!

Even though I am brunette....

I don't like blonde jokes.

I do have respect for many blonde women.

Even though I am Baptist....

I did NOT like or agree with much of ANYTHING Jerry Falwell said.

I am not really all that conservative, although I don't consider myself to be totally liberal either.

I do not believe that homosexuality is a choice OR a sin.

I don't think that every other religion and denomination will die & go to hell!

Even though I am the ONLY girl out of a grand total of 8 kids....

I am not a spoiled rotten brat.  I AM spoiled, and I can be a brat, but I am not rotten and I am NOT a spoiled brat!

I am not afraid of spiders- much.

I was not pampered excessively as a child.

I do not see myself as a premadonna princess.

I have a decent sense of direction.

I don't know how to fight very well, but I am unbelievable at curling my knees up to my chin, and protecting my face while laying on my back, rolling up in one swift movement to my feet and running like hell!  lol

Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
LOL @ your last answer! LOL!

I am the oldest daughter and I do know how to fight LOL!

I"m thinking hard, but fnd myself a typical soccer mom, married, stay at home mom with 4 kids, running around keeping thier committments.  Ugh, how borning.....

Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
Oh puleeze, I'm sure there are a ton of stereotypes you don't ascribe to. I'll let you mull it over some more.
MisChelle on
Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
Ok, Ok, I'll think some more.
MisChelle on
Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
I'm still thinking

ok, how about this

Even though I'm a conservative Republican I have liberal opinions about some very controversial issues (and since this isn't a political discussion, and I'm not in the mood for a debate, I"ll just leave it at that)

Instead of complaining about being a sports widow, I plan weekend activities around the  Green Bay Packers schedule, and NEVER plan anything for Super Bowl Sunday

Even though I am a high school dropout, I can still do my childrens homework (grades 8, 11, & 12) most of the time, and can type a resume and be a productive member of society.

Im in business for myself with a direct sales company, but I don't badger all my friends and acquaintances to buy from me and neglect the rest of our relationship

ok, theres a start

myclette on
Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
Okay!!! The last one was the best if you ask me! LOL! My mother has a friend who is always getting involved with pyramid companies and the woman is always calling me.

Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
Most of my Friends and Family know what I sell, and my phone number if they are interested.  I believe that the very premise of direct sales is an awesome way for women to spend more time with their families while helping with the finances.  It just seems really inappropriate to me to proposistion the people that come to my church, my nieces funeral, etc with promoting myself.  However, make a comment that sounds like you might be open to my product then I will find a way to let you know what I do, in an soft manner, cause after all, I have to make some contacts in order to have a business    OH, and I love to shop for like minded women in direct sales, I shop their catalogs first before I will go to the mall, I'd rather shop from ,my friends, than from corporate america any day of the week.  LOL

Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
I've got loads I can do, so I think I'll just pick a few favorites.

Though I am caucasion -
* I do not think I am superior to any other race.
* I refuse to feel guilty for being caucasian.
* I have had the same opportunities that most other people have had, but certainly not MORE.
* I have soul.

Though I did not complete college -
* I am not stupid.
* I am not lazy.
* I am not unmotivated.
* I AM a professional.

Though I am a large woman -
* I am not stupid.
* I am not lazy.
* I am not unmotivated.
* I am not irresponsible.
* I do not sit around noshing on bonbons all day.
* I AM bodacious.
* I can probably out activity people half my size.

Though I am a redhead -
* My temper is not daunting. OK, I take that back, but it depends entirely on the situation.
myclette on
Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
I hate those stereotypes about people who didn't complete college.  I just heard one on the Tyra Banks show. A girl thought she was more intelligent than her friend because her friend went to beauty school and she went to college. The girl who went to beauty school owned her own salon.  Uh, that sounds pretty good to me.

Re: Let's Shatter Some Stereotypes
As far as I'm concerned, you are a professional if you do good work, take pride in your work and behave profesionally - no matter WHAT your career is.
