Conservative Free Republic blog in free speech flap after racial slurs directed at Obama children

"A typical street whore." "A bunch of ghetto thugs." "Ghetto street trash." "Wonder when she will get her first abortion."

These are a small selection of some of the racially-charged comments posted to the conservative 'Free Republic' blog Thursday, aimed at U.S. President Barack Obama's 11-year-old daughter Malia after she was photographed wearing a t-shirt with a peace sign on the front.

The thread was accompanied by a photo of Michelle Obama speaking to Malia that featured the caption, "To entertain her daughter, Michelle Obama loves to make monkey sounds."

Though this may sound like the sort of thing one might read on an Aryan Nation or white power website, they actually appeared on what is commonly considered one of the prime online locations for U.S. Conservative grassroots political discussion and organizing - and for a short time, the comments seemed to have the okay of site administrators.

Moderators of the blog left the comments - and commenters - in place until a complaint was lodged by a writer doing research on the conservative movement, almost a full day later.

"Could you imagine what world leaders must be thinking seeing this kind of street trash and that we paid for this kind of street ghetto trash to go over there?" wrote one commenter.

"They make me sick .... The whole family... mammy, pappy, the free loadin' mammy-in-law, the misguided chillin', and especially 'lil cuz... This is not the America I want representin' my peeps," wrote another.

Such was the onslaught of derision on the site that the person who originally complained about the slurs, a Kristin N., claims only one comment in the first hundred posted actually criticized the remarks as inappropriate.

A note on the front of the blog reads, "Free Republic does not advocate or condone racism, violence, rebellion, secession, or an overthrow of the government," but one comment on the thread read, "This disgusting display makes me more and more eager for the revolution," while another read, "I never actually wnated [sic] to be a pistol before but..."

After attention from other blogs, the thread was suppressed and placed under review, but before long it was returned to the site intact, and attracted a new series of racial slurs when the original complaint email was posted publicly to the site, with the sender's email address intact.

"The writer has a point," wrote site owner Jim Thompson sarcastically. "We should steer clear of Obama's children. They can't help it if their old man is an American-hating Marxist pig."

"I agree Jim," wrote commenter, by the nickname NoobRep. "The kids didn't pick their commie pinko pansy of a father. Nor did they choose to be put into the spotlight. But Obama/Soetoro is fair game and so is his witch of a wife."

"Poor kids. I hope they're not 'punished with a baby'," wrote another. "Hopefully they won't deal cocaine like the Kenyan."

"DIRTBAGS! All of them. Our [White House] is now a joke to the rest of the world. We have no respect and this is not going to turn out well, mark my words. We will be hit, and much worse than last time. We are now seen as weak and vulnerable. Ghetto and Chicago thugs have taken over."

Only after significant negative attention from a host of left wing political blogs did the maintainers of the Free Republic site place the thread under review for a second time, before finally pulling it.

In the wake of the controversy, some Free Republic posters complained about the vitriol.

One poster by the name of "fullchroma" wrote, "To Jim Thompson: The recent uptick here in racist vitriol, aimed at Barrack, Michelle and their children has made me wonder if I belong. My objection to Obama has nothing to do with skin tone. Is the ugly stereotype of Conservative racism true?"

Another, going by the name of TChris, wrote, "Free Republic is a political discussion forum. It SHOULD be beneath us as a group to stoop to such juvenile tactics as I see increasing here lately. Do we REALLY have to insult Mrs. Obama's appearance like a clique of nasty 14-year-old girls?"

But such opinions were not shared by all. Said Roses of Sharon, "Poor libs .... Too late, the battle has been joined."

Yet these are the some fucktards who defend Sarah Palin against a Letterman JOKE. Mkes perfect sense to me. Yup. Not racist at ALL.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
Yep! I didn't like when Letterman talked about Palin's kids either.  I don't think taking your anger out on someone's kids is right or even logical.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
How the hell do you live with yourself, saying things like that about children? I can understand taking children to task when they act the fool (gee, like having a child when you're a child yourself), but what in the bloody hell have these little girls EVER done to anyone? That's what gets me about the whole thing. It's like these little BLACK girls aren't even human, but hey, Britney Spears that fuckin looney toon, sure, no problem. Miley getting naked for pictures? Nah, that's cool, too. Not trashy in the least. I'll let my kids buy their albums and watch their skanky videos, sure, no problem. You can be 16 and wearing hooker boots as long as you're white.

My parents are the same people you're talking about in this post and they say some of the most horrible things like what's up there, and so do my parents' friends. When I bring up stuff like Britney and Bristol and Miley, you should hear the sputtering and the "It's totally different!" Of course it's different. One is black and one is white.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
How the Hell can any intelligent person find a thing wrong with this family?!  I feel that many people are jealous of the man who is our President, his wife, his children, their relationship with not only each other but with life and living and the fact that there is no dirt to dig up there.

The most disheartening thing for me is the fact they hide their jealousy beneath a thin veil of racism.  Further, their jealousy of this family is fueled by racism.  I hear both backwoods Democrats and elitist Republicans alike tossing this type of hatred towards the Obama family.

Good thing that such types are not the majority.  As a Republican myself I'd rather have 10 million of the opposing party choose a fine man or woman to represent and lead my country than an equal number of ignorant, outdated racist types putting more of the same in office.

How truly stupid those people look- choosing to take shots at that exceptional young girl.

So true.  If you disagree with the man's policies, then that's one thing.  Saying hateful things about his children crosses the line BIG TIME!

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
Pardon my French, but what the FUCK? I really can't even tell you how mad this makes me.  It's totally unpatriotic (which, you know, Republicans claim and strive to be) to put down one's president, but to attack his family, especially his ELEVEN YEAR OLD DAUGHTER? That's disgusting.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
It's very disgusting.  It makes you realize what they really have a problem with -- it certainly seems their objection to his policies take a backseat to what they really find objectionable.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
It's sickening.  I mean, I have friends who are conservative who actually have a problem with Obama's POLICIES and not his blackness.  As annoying as I find Elizabeth Hasselback's opinions on the View, I've never felt that she had a racist bone in her body. That's the God's honest truth.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
OMG, having a problem with Obama's policies?!?!?!  Who'd have thought....disliking a president for their policies!  What a concept!  Really, isn't that what people should be looking at him for?  Before the election, actually before the Dem candidate was chosen, my mom and I were discussing Obama vs. Hilary.  We came to the conclusion that if either of them won the nomination and then won the election, if they failed in office they would publicly be blamed because of race or gender.  Obama screwed up because he's black, Hilary screwed up because she's a woman.  And as the process continued, you heard people make comments about "once a month" Hilary would make horrible decisions and declare war, push the big red button, etc.  It drives me nuts the way people single out that one stereotype and try to prove it right in someone as that reason for them to fail or stick out in a negative way.  In this case, they're picking on a child!!!  If it was a white 11 year old girl wearing a tshirt with a peace sign on it, it wouldn't be a big deal at all.  It'd be a white girl wearing a tshirt with a peace sign on it.  Nothing more.  There are some really colorful minds that are part of that group to think up this shit.  It's either all or nothing, and there's no spectrum is there?  No moderates, or were those the wishy washy people who don't know politics from a hole in the ground?  Those have to be the people that got berated on Mindsay for having their own opinions and ideas all last year.  That's it!  *shakes head*  Apparently change is only good if it's a change from one Republican conservative to another.  I just am having a hard time wrapping my head around this because these people have the audacity to say it's not about race, and the site administrators left the comments up for so long before pulling it!  What would world leaders say about that?!?!

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
One person pointed out that there was no legitimate reason to post that picture on Free Republic in the first place.  It didn't illustrate Obama's policies.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
I read that, and I agree, especially if the purpose of the site is to discuss policies and to make political change.  I read the follow up type article that Andreux linked to and I was reading your other comments and it's just disheartening.....everyone was up in a twist about Letterman/Palin and the joke he made.  Granted, also about a child under 18, but still a joke.  This is different, IMO, because you can tell the comments are meant with malice, they're not just joking around the way Letterman does with his commentary.  He at least had the decency to apologize after the fact and say that he really meant no harm or offense to the Palin family.  None of those people on Free Republic will ever apologize.  They'll just continue the same line of talk.  But back to your original point, the picture should never have been there because it had no link to any of the site's purposes.  Had she been wearing a "Reform Healthcare" shirt, it could be debated.  Even so, nothing they said in response to a president's daughter wearing a "reform healthcare" shirt could or should have been directed at her.  It should have then beed rerouted to discuss Obama's policies.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
I mean that is the lowest of the low.  Plus, what was Free Republic's purpose for posting that photo anyway. It had nothing to do with disagreeing with Obama's policies.  It was basically published knowing what kind of response it would get.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
Yup, the lowest of the low and so DAMNED IGNORANT.

Is this a blog site like Mindsay or one of those news type blogs? I'm wondering because the persons membership to that site should be terminated or he/she should be fired.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
Well, Free Republic is a conservative news site.  So that's what makes it even worse.  It isn't like a personal blog or something.

Re: Honestly, its the year 2009!
Sorry, it is a blog site, but I don't think it's like Mindsay.  Mindsay is open to personal topics and such. Free Republic is mostly political.

It is an aggregated news blog like Huffington Post. I guess you could say it is the conservative HuffPo!

Thanks.

Well, by allowing that crap they have totally discredited themselves as a serious political spot, I hope so anyway.

When I clicked on a link I read something about the journalist posting it because he/she was looking for hate.

At least this site has been exposed for being truly disgusting.
